Joyo Dyna Comp for Bass, How Compressors Work - Episode 002
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 13 авг 2024
- If you're new to effects for bass guitar, the idea might be overwhelming! My goal is to ease you into it with a series of videos highlighting some of the tips and tricks I've learned over the years, and to offer my honest opinions of the gear I review.
In this episode, I'll tell you about the Dyna Comp from Joyo. It's a must-have pedal if you're not already using a compressor.
Joyo offers some really capable effects pedals for a fraction of the prices you'll see on big-name effects!
I have an endorsement deal through Joyo, so take what I say with a grain of salt. I don't expect anyone to trust me right out of the gate, but I assure you I'm willing to point out anything I see as an issue, even with products I endorse. For their price point, there's not much to complain about though!
Check out Joyo! - www.joyoaudio.com/
The Joyo pedal in this video is a JF-10 Compressor. Check out the 10 series pedals here:

Joyo also offers a mini pedal line, called the Ironman series, which I will be featuring in upcoming videos! These are more compact and take up much less room on your pedal board, which is a big deal for a lot of people working with limited real estate:

Thank you for watching!
As a soundman, this was by far the clearest explanation of what compression is, ever.
Thank you!
I can't believe you held it up for about 5 mins straight haha
hahaha I saw this comment before, and just saw it again. Made me laugh both times. It was my second video and I didn't know how to put a photo on the screen. ;)
@@hamonthecob Maybe you play a bass with neckdive and so you are constantly training.
This explanation was so easy to understand and full of detail, it made me go out and buy a Joyo JF-10 for my bass rig. I'm loving it so far, cheers man!
Excellent explanation of what compressors do and how to use them. My Sound Tech recommended I get one and I just ordered this one.
Great review my dude! 👍
FYI. ive been looking at a few of these vids for this pedal. Yours is the FIRST and so far ONLY one to accurately define what a compressor pedal does and how. and in easy english, no less.
Thank you!
I just bought this pedal on Amazon last night. Just so happens to match my bass.👍
Great video. Easy to comprehend.
My new manual for the Joya Compressor! Well done dude
Dude this is an amazing video. Thanks a million man, you've earned my sub. Very informative and concise with no information that wasn't needed. Only thing I wish was that you did a sound demo. Regardless though awesome video man keep it up!
Thank you! The issue with a sound demo on a compressor pedal is that if everything is set up right, you shouldn't be able to really hear it.
Loved ur explanation , was waiting for a demo .
Apologies. Compressors are a hard pedal to demo. When used right, you should never really notice it's there. If you adjust one enough to get a huge distinction between when it's on and when it isn't, you're probably not dialing it in very well in the first place, and in that case, people will be led astray by the demo. Compressors aren't that important at quiet levels like the ones you'll be listening to in a RUclips demo. Where they really shine is on a loud stage where an unexpected spike in volume could be enough to make crowds wince, or even damage a PA. I know this explanation could come off as a cop-out, but I hope, instead, that it makes sense.
HamOnTheCob True.
That was a fantastic video! Really appreciated your concise and clear communication style. I'm going to take a closer look at this pedal or whatever version is out there now in 2020.
Thank you!
Great presentation. Clearest one I have heard. Thanks
Nice man. There doesn't seem to be a lot of good resources on youtube about compression pedals. Keep it up dude! Subscribed!
Great review and explanation - thanks!
Because of you I finally hit the trigger and purchase this pedal
This kind of videos are really important to me especially I am a "budget" conscious bassist that really doesn't want to shell out few hundred bucks to improve my tone 😅
I hope you can make another budget bass pedal in the future...
Just got the JOYO and they are great pedals and for the money even better !!! We are in the golden age of pedals and basses. SOOooo many good choices for affordable choices.
Your video helped me decide to buy it, I am happy with the pedal, it makes my basses sound better and more even. It will not be a super pedal, but for the price I think it is very good and easy to use, Just what I wanted :)
Gracias amigo
This pedal has gotten some really bad reviews on talkbass. But your video really gives a great explanation. Are you still currently using this pedal?
Buckle up - I didn't mean to go off, but here are my thoughts on TalkBass:
I've been a member of TalkBass for 14 years and I can barely stand it there. Nowhere else on the internet are there more lemmings who do nothing but follow trends set by their own crowd. No one has any real experience with half the gear they talk about, good or bad. People see one person saying something and they start saying it, and it snowballs. It's a joke. Or even worse, they give gear good reviews because they're afraid to look stupid for buying a $300 pedal that wasn't the second coming or whatever.
When I first started on TB, I thought it was pretty great. But over the years it has grown more and more intolerable. If you have the gear that's the current "It" thing, then you're golden there. But if you're using something else, you're dismissed like you have no idea what you're doing. I've played bass for 20 years and if I had a dollar for every piece of gear someone talked up on TB that was actually average at best, or a dollar for every piece of gear people talk bad about even though it's great, I'd be a millionaire.
Most of the bad reviews of cheap gear are from people who pay 10 times as much for a boutique pedal that does the same thing, and they're butthurt that they overspent, so they try to justify their expensive purchase by talking shit on the more affordable alternative.
I've been using my two Joyo compressors for several years now and they're great. If I had a Dingwall and made videos about Darkglass pedals, the TB community would so thoroughly cream their jeans that the world might explode from it all. Please consider this next time you see a ton of love for a certain piece of gear on TB - check the classifieds on there and see how many people are selling them. You'll be shocked. If they're the greatest thing since sliced bread, why is everyone dying to get rid of theirs? It happens like clockwork with every wave of new trends.
People spend way too much money building rigs that conform to the whims of TalkBass blabbermouths, and when they get the gear, they review it before they've even spent a day with it! Then they figure out it's not for them, and they sell it with some excuse about how their dog desperately needs braces or some nonsense, and then the next week they're buying something else! hahaha it's ridiculous but hilarious at the same time.
Sorry for the long answer, but I've been wanting to get that off my chest for a while. haha
@@hamonthecob Thank you so much for explaining the haters on Tb, getting that out of your chest and great tips about the classifieds. What an eye opener, I really appreciate your feedback about the forum and your honest opinion on this pedal. And I agree 100% on what you stated about most of the Tb members giving affordable gear bad reviews and only praising boutique gear than later on they sell it lol. Not everyone or musicians can afford the top of the line gear. I wish we had more honest people like you on the forum giving honest reviews on affordable gear. Once again thank you for the reply. And I most definitely will be purchasing this pedal. You just got yourself a sub from me friend.
@@biga173rdify Thanks for the kind words. I've tried fighting the good fight on TB several times, but I always get swarmed. haha
@@hamonthecob Bro you couldn't be more correct about TB. I love it when I am curious about something technique wise and someone is right there to give me that GOTCHA moment. It really can be a good resource if you get the right member.
Otherwise? Yeah, all of the above. I've asked a simple question and seen it turn into a six page freakin debate that turned bitchy.
@@hamonthecob subbed for this reply 💯
Hey, great video! Thanks! I have an opportunity to pick up a VALCO UNDER PRESSURE pedal that looks like it has the exact same controls and layout as the JOYO. I'm guessing they are identical. Am I correct? PS: I live in Mexico, so pedals are either not available or super expensive.
They're probably similar pedals! Hope you love it! Thanks for the kind words.
Great informative video, thanks.
The only time I've personally had a good relationship with a sound man was when they were a bassist themself. Usually sound men are too involved with making the kick drum as loud as possible, and to hell with the bass player. I've had this happen so often that I've actually refused to go through the board at smaller venues, and covered the room with my stage rig. At least I can be heard then. Oh, they're not happy, but what are they going to do, cut me out of the mix?
I've never heard of someone requesting to NOT be in the FOH mix. Intriguing.
@@hamonthecob Considering how poorly some mix the bass, I'd rather fill the venue with my stage amp if they're going to bury the bass. I run a 1,100 watt RMS amp with 1 x15" and 4 x 10" cabinets, so I can get it done. I have friends in the crowd who monitor my volume and ensure it's appropriate. I have had some sound men who did a very balanced mix; but when they don't, I'll take care of it myself.
It sucks man. I'm FOH and most of my colleagues in small venues are absolute jerks and put shame on the craft. And why would they not be happy? They're dumb. Something that sounds good on stage is one or two less cables, or one less snake to rig for me! I'm fed up of other soundmen crossing their arms in front of their boards. I constantly mix during the performances live, the way that we did it back in the days for recording. I do fade ins and fade outs, I mute when the performer is tuning, and I even do some tremolo effect on the fader *only when certain performers do crazy bends on an acoustic guitar* - it makes them feels like gods and it sounds a-ma-zing.
I'm tired as well of other soundmen who hate their jobs. Find something else to do. I have just as much fun playing as I do behind the board, which I consider an instrument.
I love this pedal for my passive bass, I use attack at the min (this is the attack time), sustain at mas, and level 9 hours. For my active bass the level is between 12 hours and 03 hour, but I cant use it because it clips
What kinda bass is that to your left(viewers right)? She's a beauty
Thanks! That's a 2004 Warwick Streamer Stage II. Best bass I've ever owned. It was my holy grail for two decades before I finally got one.
@@hamonthecob ...the design "relocated" from a Spector.
If you google this you'll read how Warwick "relocated" the design then refused to pay Stuart Spector's legal bill when they lost the case in court, nearly bankrupting his company. For this reason and no other, readers wanting a great bass should BUY A SPECTOR!!
@@micktomazou I've owned a USA Spector NS-2 and 27 or 28 Warwicks. I've been a Warwick endorsing artist since 2015.
Hey man, loved the explanation. Do you still use it? Would you still recommend it? I can get a used one for $15 (perfect condition, like it has never been used). But I don't know if I should care for higher end ones. I don't want to stick with something that I will eventually need to upgrade.
Thank you! Yep I still have a pair of them that I use. Mine have been solid for all these years, and I can't think of a time I've ever wished I had a more expensive one. Your mileage may vary. But for $15, you can't go wrong!
@@hamonthecob thank you!
Well, I still don't know if that is the right thing I am looking for. Your explanation is cool for someone who doesn't know what a compressor is, but I was kinda hoping you demo it. Compressors are hard to demo, but just turning all the knobs all the way up and down while playing would have been really great. Thanks anyways for the information you provide, I'm sure it helps people who look for it!
If you understand what a compressor is and how it works, you shouldn't need a demo of it. I'm not being a smartass, I'm just saying it's not like a chorus pedal where you need to see how it sounds. The instrument will sound the same. Properly set up, you should never really "hear" a compressor, in my opinion.
demo please :)
If you still recommend it, I'm thinking of getting one.
I still very much recommend it. I've had 2 of them for a couple years now and I've never felt a need to buy a more expensive standalone compressor.
By the way, I just saw that you "liked" a post of mine on TalkBass regarding a distorted signal coming from one of these pedals, and I felt it necessary to follow up and clarify that I eventually figured out it wasn't my pedal making the noise. I can't remember what it ended up being, but the pedal was innocent.
HamOnTheCob I didn't know it was you! Cool!
Fortunately you have the same name on here as you do on there, or else I wouldn't have known it was you! :)
Nice explanation. Thanks bro 👏🏼👏🏼🇵🇷 I bought ☝️
is the pedal good for bass slapping?
Compression is one of the crucial elements to slap bass playing, and this pedal is great for slap! Thank you!
I'm still thinking of these two pedals will I buy, Joyo dyna compressor or Mooer Yellow compressor
I don't have any experience with the Mooer Yellow comp, but I've heard good things about the Mooer pedals in general, and the Yellow will take up less space than the Joyo. Either way, I think you'll probably be happy. Let me know which one you decide to go with! Best wishes!
One question only: where the hell is the actual test of the pedal??
Apologies. Compressors are a hard pedal to demo. When used right, you should never really notice it's there. If you adjust one enough to get a huge distinction between when it's on and when it isn't, you're probably not dialing it in very well in the first place, and in that case, people will be led astray by the demo. I know this explanation could come off as a cop-out, but I hope, instead, that it makes sense.
HamOnTheCob true, but I think you should've given it a spin with something. Anyway, thanks
I probably should have... you're right. At the time, I was still trying to figure out how to make videos. Between that and my crippling lack of motivation, it's a wonder anything got made at all. LoL
Thank you for checking out my video.
You kinda look like kidbehindacamera lol
-- this video is a Story Telling & not showing a demonstration on "HOW" to use the Dyna Compressor pedal.🤣
He was holding the pedal & talks a lot for 6mins. 🙄
This video is Talking Head.. 👎😂
Never once did I say I was going to demo the pedal. I explained how compressors work, just as the title says. Merry Christmas.
You totally convinced me dude! Great review. At first i was a little insecure about purchasing this pedal, mainly because it is meant for guitar players (me being a bassist).I found one today and after seeing this review, i'm totally going to get one.
