The Idiotic Reign of Aegon the Unworthy

  • He has stiff competition, but Aegon IV may be the most unworthy king in Targaryen history. From potentially committing regicide and patricide to take the Iron Throne, to taking advantage of his sister Naerys and brother Aemon the Dragonknight, to creating the everlasting problem of Daemon Blackfyre & the Blackfyre Rebellions, Aegon the Unworthy was truly terrible. Reigning decades after House of the Dragon, his cruelty was different than the violence of Maegor the Cruel or the wildfire-crazed Aerys the Mad King. Of all the kings throughout ASOIAF, where does the fourth Aegon Targaryen rank all time?

    Aegon IV is such an anomaly given that his dad, brother, son, and eldest grandson are all some of the best Targaryens to ever live. I wonder if that contributed to his general terrible-ness, knowing that he couldn't measure up. Hopefully Young Griff breaks the even-numbered Aegons curse.

    IMO, Aegon IV is the worst Targaryen king, even worse than Aerys II. Aerys WANTED to be a good king, he was merely incompetent at it. He was at least smart enough to hire one of the best Hands ever to help him out, only to get jealous, and then go insane. From the very moment he was born, Aegon seemed to want to actively ruin anything and everything around him purely out of a mix of spite and hedonism.

    Usually the Targaryen Kings always had problems when it came to choosing their successors and thus they created a lot of wars or conflicts that plague Westeros for many years to come, but the Aegon the Unworthy spits in the face of both his Father and Uncle trauma of the Dance of the Dragons when he purposefully name all of his bastard children as legalized Targaryen, and he probably thought that both his sons Daeron and Daemon will be in each other throats for the kingship of the Iron Throne.

      it definitely adds a layer of tragedy to the Rebellions of Daemon is the brother he loved. and let’s not forget the famously word he once said in the mystery knight
      “You would be surprised to know how many lords prefer their kings brave and stupid. Daemon is young and dashing and looks good on a horse.” even though he referred to daemon ii, it also applies to daemon i too. Honestly I think Aegon may have been telling the truth the entire time about Daeron. Nobody believed him because nobody liked him and everyone liked Daeron. Remember histroy doesnt remember BLOOD it remembers NAMES. Because Daeron was given the name Targaryen despite possibly being a bastard and having literally NO WAY of proving one way or the other means its hard to remove the name Targaryen from him. Meanwhile Daemon chooses to Name himself Blackfyre which ends up creating a Narrative that the Blackfyres are these "Others" and aren't equal to Targaryens despite both Daeron (bastard or not) and Daemon having Targaryens as both their Mother and Father. They both are 100% Targaryen and it would be totally GRRM if the Seven Kingdoms this entire time hated and had Bias against bastards mostly becauze of the Blackfyres only for the readers to find out that Daeron and Daemon were BOTH bastards with Daemon being the actual heir

    This is just my opinion, but not only do I think Aegon IV poisoned his father, but I think the reason why Aegon IV poisoned Viserys II is quite simple: Viserys was the last person who was controlling him. Perfect example, look at the mistresses of Aegon IV: He married off Aegon's first mistress to the master-at-arms at the Red Keep, Ser Lucas Lothston, and had her removed from court. He also put an end to Aegon's affair with his second mistress Megette and sent her back to her husband. As King, Aegon IV figured he could just do whatever he wanted with no one telling him what to do. It's the same reason he despised his son and heir Daeron II, because he dared to speak against him and call him out.

    Aegon could’ve murdered his father because knowing the type of man his son was was going to relieve the dragon knight of his vows and make him heir or even skip Aegon altogether and make Daeron his heir. There are many reasons he “could” have killed the king

Things that can truly avoid blackfyre rebellion is delegitimize them or took the blackfyre sword back. He can undo all bs that his father did, after all he’s the king but he didn’t

    I feel 100 percent safe in predicting that whatever else they might adapt to put on screen, the reign of Aegon IV will NEVER be made, and thank god. It would just be such a sad and disgusting story to watch for literally everyone, `this terrible pos became king by killing his very competent father, did awful things during his reign and set the stage for decades of civil war, suffered no consequences for raping his sister causing her to die in childbirth, was repeatedly protected by better people, and finally there was ZERO justice for his actions as he died peacefully in his sleep without ever feeling pain that wasn´t self-inflicted`. Yeah no, people would riot with that nihilistic a story.

      That doesn't negate it's watchability the drama, political drama and conflict is perfect for a tv show and it's not really a nihilistic story given daeron 2 comes after him if anything the dance is far more nihilistic then the blackfaire rebellion.

    • @addickland5656
      @addickland5656 Месяц назад

      @@thatoneblackdude3333 I agree the dance is worse than at least any one of the blackfire rebellions (one could quibble about whether they all taken together weren´t worse for the realm, but honestly I don´t have strong feelings on that debate so whatever), but a season of buildup would in my opinion really not be well received (I could be wrong, but I doubt it).
      HOTD season 1 worked in part because Viserys I, whatever one thinks of his ruling abilities, was at least a good guy who one could easily sympathise with, and so watching him dealing with all the personal and political drama in the builup to the dance was interesting. With Aegon IV it would be scene after scene of him being THE WORST, not getting any comeuppance, not caring about the realm as he sets the stage for the crisis, and waaay too much `this is the poor woman the king is going to traumatise this episode`.
      I´m not saying a show focused on the Blackfire rebellions won´t be good, I`m saying a multi-episode show/season on the reign of Aegon IV will be hated.
      A show/season about Aegon I? absolutely. Daeron II? sure. Jaeharys I? probably. Aegon V? maybe. Aerys II? doubtful.

Daeron I's recklessness or Baelor's idiocy can't be compares to the utter incompetence and unwillingness of Aegon IV to do anything good. There is literally not a single redeeming quality about him.
    The only positive thing I can say isn't really a positive thing either, it's just that even he didn't cross the one line to actively try and kill a million innocent people when he realized that it was over for him. And that is why he is not the worst, but "only" the second worst in my eyes.
