"Stuff" in the water is pollen from pine trees, that flyes out to sea during early summer. That can be seen a lot around the Baltic area and inside Danish waters at this time of year. Enjoy your trip 🙂

Can also be algeal bloom. It tends to be more "soupy" when clumping together on the coast, but looks quite a bit like that when spread out in the ocean

As someone who has deep sea fishes I’m large dual engine boats … the sheer balls to take a wind powered little sailboat into the ocean like this guy does is not even comprehend able.
Truely you would have to just not care at all about your own safety to like he did a plus 20 day solo sail across the Atlantic and he did the pacific ..
it’s something the camera can’t do justice for how sketchy the rough seas can be. And god forbid the mast break off and cause a catastrophic leak you would be in the middle of the ocean in a inflatable raft … hoping for a rescue .
Engine failure also electrical failure and you would really be in bad shape if it were to happen in middle of the voyage . Idk but the amount of redundancy I would have to have to even think of attempting something like this the boat probably wouldn’t float after I loaded it up !! Hahaha
I love this guys videos it’s about as dangerous a thing you could do in todays world.

Two tips 1. If you launch the spinny with your jib out you will hopefully avoid the wrap on the forestay 2. When reaching try to rig your sheet outboard as far as you can. A snatch block positioned on the toe-rail allows you to keep the slot with the eased mainsail open and keep good sail shape. Should be noticeably faster and more comfortable.

I sail on a lake in northern Idaho and when it’s spring, early summer, the conifer trees are pollinating and when the wind kicks up you can see dust-like pollen blowing from the trees in clouds. When it settles onto the water the yellowish powder accumulates in patchy slicks that eventually churn into the first few feet of water looking exactly like what you’re showing. So for the yellowish streaks you’re observing to be pollen it would need to be the right season and there would need to be a source, like forests, that are upwind of your position. I was lightly anchored on a lee shore one day when I saw this yellow cloud coming toward me from the other side of the lake, it was yellowish pollen blown up by the squall that was headed my way. Had just enough time to start up the engine and pull up the anchor. Love your channel Sam.

Its blue-green algea / cyanobacteria on the water. A typical kind of algea in the Baltic Sea. It is mildly poisonous so swimming is not recommended. If you drink it you would surely get some symptoms and also swimming in it will likely cause some reactions on your skin. For smaller animals and also fish it could be lethal.

It's fun to experiment with sail twist. With light wind, true wind speed is often faster at the top of the mast compared to wind at sea level. That causes a nonintuitive difference in apparent wind angle between the top of the mast and sea level! Velocity of the whole boat is the same from top to bottom, and apparent wind is the vector sum of the two. So, because of faster wind at height, your apparent wind angle at the top of the mast is more abeam compared to the more forward apparent wind at boom height. As you say, the solution is to create twist by loosening the main, pulling the traveler up to bring the boom back into line, loosening the vang or tightening the topping lift.

But I prefer it all the way rolled out when setting and dousing, especially in strong winds, but cruisers ussually don't need a chute in strong winds

    • @Morassabe

I"ve tried adding and subtracting leech, I've found, strength of wind seems to make a difference in how each performs. Stronger wind, less leech, I know that seems counterintuitive, but, my real world tests, show this. I grant you, it is anecdotal. lower wind speeds, I tightened the leech, with the intent of creating more vacuum at the trailing edge of the sail, thus helping the Genoa, slip my air thru quicker. It seemed to work, but, it just might be that I'm biased by my own idea.
