Back to the sailboat I wintered in Amsterdam. The mold is bad but the motor fires up and we take it out for a sail. Gadgets www.yakbitz.com calypsoinstruments.com
Discovered your Channel 2 years ago in Hospital after major surgery and as an old sea dog it really lifted my spirits and took me out of the pit of depression i was slipping into. Luckily, im ok now and still watch, thankful i discovered you Sir. Thankyou.
its a great channel isn tit. i myself am an ex matelot and never did any sailing as such. just on ships. i think its done the same for me too. hope you are all well now shippers
I love how raw and candid your videos are. I’ve been encountering boat problems and the best mindset is… “bummer, let’s fix what I need to, and get back out there”
Hanging the flag upside down is (well, was) showing familiarity with the dutch farmers and fishermen, whose business are being shut down by government. You do well that way, as many of the dutch do. The light house is called "Paard van Marken" because it resembles a horse ("Paard"). Very, very nice to see the famous Sam Holmes cruising in my home area, I hope you enjoyed!
By the time you read this, our paths may already have crossed. Working as captain on a general cargo vessel in merchant navy. We were sailing through Biscaye and English channel last days, weather was a bummer... Now we are at the North Sea, I,ll keep an eye out for you. Fair seas and looking forward to your adventures
If you get chance stop off and do some land sailing, and sail a 3x the speed of the wind. I can recommend going to De Panne in Belgium for this, you can pull into Niewpoort and get the tram down. The are other spots along the french channel coast also, but de panne might the best access on a boat
Sam...thanks very much for making me aware of the Calypso sonic anemometer. I'll look into getting one- wireless & self powered....Wow!. I retired as a research meteorologist with decades of experience with sonic anemometers so being able to bring this technology in a practical way to my boat is particularly significant to me! Dean
Having windspeed data is nice at night. Sometimes you have the sail plan well balanced and it pipes up a bit - and in the dark you think it's doubled but the instrument can tell you, nope only 5 more kts
I now realize I might have seen you entering the marina in den helder when we were leaving the marina last Saturday around lunchtime. There was a small American boat coming in, but I wasn’t really paying attention. Such a bummer if we missed you
Great video again, I’ve really enjoyed following you trips. If you come by the french coast of brittany you should look into stopping by, there are some really beautiful coasts and islands (even though the currents and tides are get tricky). I actually work in this sailing school (les Glénans) in a town called Paimpol and we spend a lot of time around this great piece of coastline. It would be awsome to cross paths with Pickled Herring and his captain 😊. Safe travels !
Welcome back to NL, Sam and Pickled Herring. Looking forward to getting out into the Ijsselmeer myself in a couple of weeks. And yeah blue is only on top if you're supporting the farmers - but they seem to have calmed down a bit now ;)
The Calypso Ultrasonic wind sensor is a cool bit of kit! I've been thinking about adding one to my little 14ft Weta to add data to tracks... still learning to get a feel for the wind so the electronics can wait...
Good to see you back on the Pickled Herring! Really looking forward to the Mediterranean this season; seems like it would be some amazing sailing, with so many culturally rich and distinctive destinations. Fair winds, mate!
Hi Sam and glad your back on the Pickle. You left FL just in time; they are flooding in S Florida and 2' of rain. Ug. Travel safe and watch your mainsail. Yup! Glad your lady is on board.
Hey, glad youre back! I have left fuel in my tanks for over a year and that was in the tropics. The main thing in any fuel or gas tank is to store them as full as you can. To keep air out.
You don't need to haul out to put in a new depth transducer. Put one inside in a bed of wax and it will work just fine, with no danger of holes in the hull.
Hi Sam, I'm a big fan from eastern PA. That amount of mold is frightening to me. I could see it later in the video under the edges of things, and behind where the radio mic was. Very bad for your respiratory system, eyes, etc. I hope you can find the sources of the water and then keep it ventilated so it doesn't return. Stay safe. -Jim
Hop in, wipe off the mold and let ‘er rip! Lol! I’m a plan ahead guy who obsesses over details; I admire (and sometimes get a bit nervous about) your carefree ways. Have a great trip!
Care free ways? More like borderline dangerous and foolish. But I love the channel! Seriously. Watching him do what he does is very entertaining. Rock on Sam!
haha love that you think anemometers are lame and pointless. I operate tower cranes for work and feel the same way. Can tell you the windspeed of a gust based on how it sounds/feels no problem. Thanks for another great video!
Those sunsets! I enjoyed the Netherlands when I was there... But seeing the country by boat is another perspective entirely. I'm curious how well the solid state anemometer will work out.
Hi Sam, I’ve been enviously watching your winter activities in Florida. Now you is back in Europe. Yay. Not sure when you filmed this (last week?) but we’ve just had a huge violent storm in the UK come up from the west /11th/12th April and cross to Holland (huge seas etc). Interested to see how you fare with that in the next vid.
I've got one of those calypso's as well, great little tool - need to get it mounted up the mast though as some point For the AIS on Navionics, it does take a while for the MMSI to change to actual ship names but will come through eventually
Sooo cool seeing you start out on another season out there! Mold and rats..bad not a bad as when a squirrel got in out 25 Catalina and freaked out over the course of a day or more!
Just found your channel love the footage. For the mold try and get DampRid it helps pull the moisture out and into the damprid I use in the camper when we store it should help you out when storing the boat just put in cabin
I noticed that you usually have a book you’re reading, you would probably enjoy the one I’m reading now. It’s “Skipjack” by Christopher White and it’s-The Story of America’s Last Sailing Oystermen- it’s so good & has so much information that I want to slow down , but on the other hand it’s a great story that won’t let me put it down. (I also had no idea about Sailboats having anything to do with Oysters ever!)
Watermen & Skipjacks along the Chesapeake Bay matter. It is sorta true that world is running out of fish and seafood in some places. Modern technology and sport fishing against old school working waterman. With China's commercial fishing fleet of some odd 200+ boats guarded by a "Coast Guard" cutter or two can and has intimidated some nation's fishing fleets on occasion. See west coast of South America- Ecuador, Chile & Peru. China can't feed its population- so international waters or in your coastal waters don't really matter to them. Unless you have a big enough naval presence to push them out they're gonna stay there until they have fished the place out thoroughly that leaves nothing for that nation's fisherman to claim. Keep an eye on China's commercial fishing fleet operations if they just happen to show up off your coastline in the future.
I said it before but I will repeat. I love your minimal format of not explaining your guests or blow-by-blow events, just this happened and that happened. Fill in the dots, or not,
They're called Fuut's :) When they have younglings they become even more awesome, as they travel with their little ones on their back. Of course they fall of sometimes, and they trying to get back on their mum's back never gets boring, I can watch that game for hours.
Yo Sam, great to see you back on the 'Pickle', sry for those rats and that horrid mould but she seemed to have wintered well bro. Loved your films from Florida. Safe travels bro.

Great to see the Pickle again! Looking forward to your Mediterranean adventure! Marry that girl- she's a keeper!
Back to the PICKLED HERRING! It’s the U.S.S. Enterprise to me… Glad y’all two are back! Feels comforting

I now realize I might have seen you entering the marina in den helder when we were leaving the marina last Saturday around lunchtime. There was a small American boat coming in, but I wasn’t really paying attention. Such a bummer if we missed you

Hi Sam. Good to see you in the Netherlands. My boat is in Marina Muiderzand - Almere. Have a great time!
One new vid of pickle on this dudes channel makes my whole year
The Calypso Ultrasonic wind sensor is a cool bit of kit! I've been thinking about adding one to my little 14ft Weta to add data to tracks... still learning to get a feel for the wind so the electronics can wait...
Must be very nice to be back with pickle. Like seeing an old friend for the first time in a while.
It was! Reunited again
Great to see you back on Pickle!
More to come!

Oh wow!
i love that windsensor. Ive never seen a solar version thats incredible. puting boatyard dogs out of work!
Hey, glad youre back! I have left fuel in my tanks for over a year and that was in the tropics. The main thing in any fuel or gas tank is to store them as full as you can. To keep air out.
The fuel seems to have held up much better than last year. Maybe the tanks were fuller when I left it.
Had a big smile on my face when you turned the Dutch flag into the farmers protest flag LOL
You don't need to haul out to put in a new

Loved seeing the pickle again, it was already 99 degrees here in Arizona the other day and I wish I could be in the Netherlands.

Always really enjoy watching your videos. Keep up the good work!
You are totally in sync with the farmers in the Netherlands they protest by puting the flags upside down ;-)
Thanks for another great video bro
Nice bro!
I like the new look Sam!
Me too. Very handsome fellow.
Your U.S. flag above your solar panels is likely to be greatly reducing your solar charge. Great video as always, Sam!
Samwich is no longer a Disney Character; he has long hair.
Your music is the best
Thank you
two very cool and useful gadgets.
proof you don't need a fancy and expensive all in once system
Those sunsets! I enjoyed the Netherlands when I was there... But seeing the country by boat is another perspective entirely. I'm curious how well the solid state anemometer will work out.
Wow, you left from my place, and I didn't see you !
Bummer, the chance to finally meet a RUclipsr I follow...
Have a great trip ! Love it ❤
Next time!

Good to see you back on the pickle. Please give us links and updates on the wind and wireless ais. Thank you
How cool to watch you sailing in the Netherlands. Marken! pretty much the same place you moored pickled herring is where I bought my boat :)
Great video Sam, enjoy the summer. Sparrow and I are about to head out and test all the repairs on a trip around Bermuda. Take care my friend.
Thanks. Sounds great! Fair seas!

What a cute couple.
Sam, you look beautiful! I love how you do a new hairstyle for every vid!!!!
Cabeza de Vaca’s adventure is the craziest story ever. Sticks with you.
I couldn’t imagine trying to cross that part of America on foot back then
Some people only dream about meeting their favorite sailor, i raised mine.
This looks like a top location for a tour.
