It's a damn shame Mulroney was convicted of cheating in the next year's Championships. The game's never been the same without him. I do remember when he was younger, learning proper canter from the greats - Bartlesby, Stoats, and the like - we'll never have such stupendous fringing ever again.
The very idea that such fringing is even possible without cheating suggests a level of naivete previously incomprehensible to the human mind. The wax is practically dripping from the man's hand. And what jackanape relegates Shaftsbury to the "and the like" in the listing of great canters? The man's gait could give a Clydesdale an erection.

Managed to dig up this little treasure from the archives, the original match transcript from the 1990 Lawn Championships at Eddingworth Hall. This was one of the major upsets of the tournament, with the team taking a third trefled after only five ends, despite a strong performance from Mulroney. I was actually there on the day and remember it well. It was a fantastic turnout and wonderfully catered. The Duke and Duchess of Banbury attended, although unfortunately they did not take to the grass. The Duke was known to be an expert fringer back in the day, having reached the finals at Eddingworth in '53 after graduating from Oxford. He actually shook Baxter's hand after the match to congratulate him for what is no doubt one of the greatest examples of fringing ever seen in the modern lawn game.
Fantastic commentary by the dynamic duo of Emery and Wansworth, who bring their usual wisdom and insight; although Wansworth does tend to show off the extent of his technical knowledge a little bit (how many youngsters these days could correctly recognise the use of Bolswing or Upholtheis in a competition-level threesome? Not many I'm sure!)
