  • Hey guys we're back with this Defender 90! In this series we're showing you how we swap a 2.4 TDCI for a BMW X5 Engine!
    In today's episode I show you how we wire the fuel pump relay, finalise the installation and start to build this car back up to get her running! We fit some shiny bits at the end of the video but unfortunately we've got a big problem to sort out!

    Love the honesty and truth behind an engine swap. Nothing runs smooth and this shows the experience and expertise needed for a full swap. Well done lads 👏👏

      To be honest, it should have been practically flawless, But you do get companies / people that take the piss. Which makes things a lot more expensive that it really needed to be. I could not believe they had to fuck about with the wiring, to me that should have been already done for him, and that's just for starters. Going from my experience with the engine conversion i did in another make of car, See one running 1st that has the same engine conversion, and ask them questions etc. Then if possible buy a donor car, and the bits etc. Expect it to be more than you budgeted it for too, as it will, and keep hold of the end goal. I nearly binned my conversion twice!

      @@procta2343 exactly right, I'm currently doing a conversion with an m57 and bought the standalone harness and emulated ECU. I have cranking but no start and just about every sensor on the engine showing fault codes and because of all the cranking the battery died and the emulator lost sync with the ECU so it needs sending back.
      We used a donor car that was in perfect working order yet the company who supplied the loom are saying the sensors must be faulty. Their after sales customer service is literally non existent.

    In South Africa we got the e36 M52 BMW 2.8i engine fitted as std in a limited production run when LR was still under bmw ownership. An interesting back story as one of the engineers at the time thought it might be a good fit as a playful gesture in one of the retailers service workshops and with very much unexpected but delightful results. They had to beg for approval from BMW HQ in Germany to release some production examples. These variants are Highly sought after these days and a great treat to drive withe very smooth and responsive power delivery. Im sure that this with updated motor even more so. Good luck and looking forward to the end result

    Looking real good!! Have you guys omitted the pre-supply pressure sensor? I think it needs 2.5 bar before the HP pump otherwise you got a no start. Also, the pressure regulator on the back of the HP pump can easily catch you out.
    My engine ran fine in the doner car but wouldn’t start when in my defender, turns out it was a bad connection on the pressure regulator on the hp pump.
    Hopefully you guys get it sorted soon, I don’t think it’s ews/immobiliser issues as Wiseman’s usually do an ews delete on their ecu’s!!
    Good luck 🤞

    Hey mate awesome build. I’ve done this conversion and had start issues. Have you tried to re sync the ews with a computer?? If not give it a go the ecu makes a new code every ignition cycle and if you have a wrong feed to ecu power it won’t make a new one - if you carry out a re sync in pretty sure it will start in that cycle - think I have it in one of my videos on here . By the way awesome videos and like the honesty in them great stuff . Paul.

    Me and my dad watched this from start to finish, We went through a similar journey, with different car. I have to say what you went through, messing about with an engine loom, and gearbox etc, you would have that thought the people who supplied the bits for you, would have had all that sorted out, so it was just a matter of plug in play. I really do admire your patience, I would have had a few hard words with the managers of the electrical unit and engine supplier. You paid enough for the conversion, so things should have been practically flawless. Its bad enough going through the hassle of putting the car back together, and then having to dismantle the car again. We ended up doing this, and buying twice. Converted loom that turned out to be faulty and a engine that self destructed on tick over. We later found out that, the engine had been damaged by who ever, They had re tightened down the head, to hide the headgasket failure, chewing a head bolt and smashing a metal pick up point on the inlet cam. A replacement inlet cam was the same price as the engine! Really did wind me and my dad up, after the hard work we had put into it. Once that nightmare was sorted we really got into enjoying the car, Just like you pal.

    you should not be disconnecting lines off the high pressure fuel rail , that system works at like 23,000 psi , and can slice your fingers with ease. as long as your getting fuel out of the return line from the fuel system, the high pressure system will bleed itself up with fuel flow and cranking

      @@juicemotors if there's no fuel getting into the rail, the ecu isn't energising the suction valve on the High pressure pump .. there's a little valve between the low pressure system and the high pressure system (in a generic common rail setup) called a suction control valve .. its just used to regulate the fuel going into the high pressure loop. No power will leave it closed, and all the fuel will just bypass the high pressure loop. So for some reason, your ECU isn't sending a signal to that valve 🤔

    I appreciate all the work that has gone into this project so far, but can't understand why you are fitting a Euro 4 compliant engine into this truck that is worse than the last Puma 2016 model. Will anybody want to spent the money on this if it limits the area you can drive into. And no I'm not one of these green tree huggers, just worried about the increasing legislation that is layered on the motorist by money grabbing councils, TFL being one of them!

    • @juicemotors
      @juicemotors  2 года назад +1

      We’re fitting this engine because of its reliability, refined feel, larger displacement, torque curve and power output - this particular engine is famous for its durability and power. The puma engines are clunky, unrefined and unreliable comparatively. We’re not building this with ULEZ in mind, we’re building this with the mechanics behind it all. The way I look at it, it’s an awesome engine for a great car, amazing how a 6 cylinder feels against a 4 cylinder
