What I think is truly amazing about Anthony's sons is how they are bringing us all closer. How people of all races, religions, and ideologies are finally being drawn together. There's a word in Portuguese, saudade (saw-dad) that doesn't translate into English perfectly. It's a profound longing or nostalgia for something or someone. It's a key motif woven throughout Portuguese folk music (Fado). This is the closest I've heard any English artist come to nailing saudade in their music. Oliver has got soul in his lyrics that's just infectious

Nolan Taylor's "68" is probably my favorite country song I have happened upon from a different artist going down the youtube rabbit hole from "Rich Men North of Richmond." For a recommendation that isn't just Oliver Anthony's other songs(which are also good).
I wouldn’t classify that as country by any means. But country is a very vague term Oliver Anthony is more folk/ bluegrass style than anything. I listened to him because of this comment and I really like his music but it’s more singer song writer/ Americana. He is definitely very authentic as well. Anyways thanks for the rec.

Agreed! I watched the aldean video once. No big deal. Not catchy. I watched Rich Men about 200 times by now. Literally singing that song to myself for an entire 7 days, at home, at work. It's got to be the best thing I've ever heard, and I'm a big PRIMUS fan 😅

If I had to classify the genre, the closest I can think of is a hybrid of a down-tempo Appalachian bluegrass and blues.

41 yr old father of 2. Dual income household working 7 days a week for the last 3 years struggling to make it as medical cannabis farmer in Oklahoma. Lifelong musician with mental health problems. Worked for the VA more than a decade then fired when said mental health problems made my job difficult. Grew up in the church and have struggled with alcohol and drugs all my life but this man is tapping into something more real than anything pushed by popular culture in the last 20 yrs.
