The “Making Michael Jackson’s Thriller” documentary was Landis’ partner and editor’s idea. They needed $500K to make Thriller (an outrageous cost in those days) and MJ’s label refused to pay for it. So Landis’ editor asked “what if we cook up this 45 minute ‘making of’ documentary, plus the 15-minute video, and sell it back to the networks?” The new Showtime network paid $250K for the right to show it first exclusively. Then MTV came around and offered $250K to show it second to a much wider audience... In short, the video literally paid for itself. 👀

For those who don't know, winning 7 Oscars is quite the record - and he was actually nominated 10 times. This is the man who revolutionized special effects with the transformation scene in "An American Werewolf in London" - nobody had done anything like it before and only a few (like Rob Bottin on "The Thing") managed to equal it since.

This reminds me: My high school art teacher was so enthralled and impressed with the Thriller video that he showed it to our class one afternoon. A distinct memory from late 1983 for me. You could tell that Jackson, Landis and Baker were so big on classic monster movies when they were growing up ... and they poured that shared fondness into the music video.
Sometimes I watch his songs live during the bad tour and I cant even process he was real... the amount of energy, the dance moves, the notes he hits but overall is the way he loses himself in the moment, you can see him transform himself from this sickly shy guy to unreal alien talent within seconds.. its crazy
Sure, cause its normal that 90 of all your kids friends "that you even have children as friends is awkward" but 90% came out and told on him during the 90s AND the 2000s.
@@LuckyFlesh who are "we"?.. There's a lot more people believing he did it than not so who exactly are "we"? If you google you can find that at least 6 people accused him so my counter question to you is, "how many did not accuse him"? And how many boys were actually hanging with a grown up man?
@@LuckyFlesh hell it isn't, you call me a liar and if you want proof you use the same tools you used to find him not guilty and try change my mind because it seems important. you got 6 kids mentioning it, dating back to 79. If your skull can't comprehend that information i just cant help you.. youre saying Michael was a billionaire in 79 and people tried to get his money? His own sister was suspicious of him, than you got the psychological part of it where there were rumour of abuse by his dad, that he always wanted to be a boy, that he kept brining small kids to his room and sleep with them, but no.. You need more proof, how about the fact that Michael is the only one that people got upset about? R Kelly? Weinstein?. People accepted that the victims were telling the truth, why? Because r kelly and Cosby weren't sleeping with the same gender or the fact that the victims were white boys. that's where the black community draw the lines as if the white community would somehow care that the victims where white or that they would laugh at black people as if they thelsemves dont have guys like Jeffrey dahmer. I know you're too young to know this guy. Michael was not considered black since the 90s, the guy wanted to be white and that had nothing to do with why people liked him, white, black, the guy was amazing and king of pop regardless of color... Michael is the only case where black people have gotten offended, let that sink in for a while. The only case where so many disagreed yet you or as you called it "we" are a minority" that think so. Now just to put away all accusations, im black myself and i dont take say things if i don't true believe it, if i didn't use information that's more likely to be true than not. No but of course all these people that haven't even met plus their parents just decide between different decades to call him out on child molestation.

Thriller literally broke racial barriers, MTV realized they HAD to show more black artists when Thriller hit, along with Beat it and Billie Jean, it also revolutionized Music Videos, and made the Thriller album the greatest selling album, which led to his historic 8 Grammy wins, and then he became the king of pop

This is a fucking fascinating episode, but his voice is the only thing I can’t get with. Why’s he whispering half the time like he’s trying to fuck Joe Rogan?
I will never forget when he first performed the Moonwalk. People were BLOWN AWAY! It was truly epic 🌠
Still love watching Michael Jackson! His dancing is just magic!
Surprised Joe didn't mention chemical castration
Probably because Rick Baker actually knew MJ professionally and never had a sour word to say about him.
@@jacobc.8915 You say that like Joe Rogan is renowned for his tact.
@@victorkong82 Fair point lol
Rogan is spreading rumors
It's bullshit anyway. Any singer would tell you that MJ was certainly not a castrato
My kids are 5 and 6 and they love thriller it's a freaking masterpiece and never outdated straight classic!
That's awesome. I'm glad that a new generation is discovering his work.
I'm also sorry in advance for the disgusting comments you'll get by those who are mentally unhinged and just want to spread hatred. They'll never win.
Yeah definitely introduce you kids to Michael Jackson
It doesn't matter what yous think his music was great the man's dead and it was never proven he did any of those things only allegedly did every cones out strongly changing their minds 10 yes after his passing get real dicks! I literally live 10 mins from his childhood home so do you think I care about anything yous think? 😂😂😂 it's not like epstien who we know did all that with the Clintons etc.. 😂😂😂 freaking morons
@Scott Fraser again proof!!! Actually see him committed it never happen I don't care about allegations the truth and proof that's it and again was he weird yes he was but I'm not judging his character I'm saying his music was great period now R Kelley now he did it there's evidence on him
@Scott Fraser sounds like you know way to much and know all the tricks to getting kids in your house 😂😂😂 sounds like experience talking to me 😂😂😂😆😆
Even though I am not into ASMR Mr. Baker has a great voice for it.
Rick Baker is a legend. His gorilla designs are amazingly realistic.
Michael was and always will be on another level. 80s was Jackson hysteria.
Sometimes I watch his songs live during the bad tour and I cant even process he was real... the amount of energy, the dance moves, the notes he hits but overall is the way he loses himself in the moment, you can see him transform himself from this sickly shy guy to unreal alien talent within seconds.. its crazy
He was truly blessed with talent. His live performances are like no other.
Would love to hear Joe do a new podcast on Leaving Neverland now that it’s found out to be full of proven bs
Sure, cause its normal that 90 of all your kids friends "that you even have children as friends is awkward" but 90% came out and told on him during the 90s AND the 2000s.
@@kaliberoh955 " but 90% came out and told on him during the 90s AND the 2000s."
Provide PROOF of this absurd claim.
...we're waiting.
@@LuckyFlesh who are "we"?.. There's a lot more people believing he did it than not so who exactly are "we"? If you google you can find that at least 6 people accused him so my counter question to you is, "how many did not accuse him"? And how many boys were actually hanging with a grown up man?
@@kaliberoh955 if I Google?
The burden of proof is on the claimant.
Where's your proof?
...still waiting.
Edit: p.s. PROOF, not accusations.
MJ is the most famous and also the greatest entertainer of all time...BAR NONE!
The whole interview could have been about the making of thriller and I would be just as interested

Loved listening to Rick talk about the art of an iconic piece of history. Thriller in all its brilliance has never been surpassed. Michael was the best.
michael's other albums are better
I loved "thriller" when I was a kid...I used to rent the vhs cassette of it all the time from the video store...Micheal Jackson was so huge when I was young. I remember lots of my classmates has the red leather jacket with all the zippers on it and I wanted one so bad..lol
funny he's 4th most google human in the world right now 11 yrs after death,No one can come to his level
Thriller was our first VHS rental. That and Popeye with Robin Williams. RIP to Michael and Robin.
One of the greatest humans to ever walk the Earth, his music was only second to his philanthropy and work with human rights
Khabib cherrypicking Weight bully actually Michael Jackson wasn’t a pedophile or a creep
@Khabib cherrypicking Weight bully can you prove that? Or are you going off a completely biased documentry told on it from the point of view of two liars😂 maybe go check the debunk video.
@Khabib cherrypicking Weight bully Get a life, you fucking freak.
Pinball bruh wtf are u talking about
@@seandamenacee4767First I stated that the reason most people recently think MJ is a peado is because of the HBO documentary done on him by the two supposed victims. It is highly biased. There is a debunk picking apart all the statements the two guys make on it. Second I made a joke based on what they both said on the documentary that he would stare at their butt holes. Sorry it flew over your head.
KING OF POP 👑
King Of Pedophiles too. Don't forget that part
@@ACMJPT.2 Fuck off.
ACMJ 2 If you still believe that you have not done enough research. Those people that sued him either felt they needed the money that bad or were plain greedy people. Micheal Jackson did not have the best childhood and was always a kid at heart.

ACMJ 2 actually he wasn’t a pedophile
Thriller literally broke racial barriers, MTV realized they HAD to show more black artists when Thriller hit, along with Beat it and Billie Jean, it also revolutionized Music Videos, and made the Thriller album the greatest selling album, which led to his historic 8 Grammy wins, and then he became the king of pop
I remember that time and waited for the video with everyone else.I was not disappointed. It was epic and everyone at school talked about it that whole week.
I was a kid who got to stay up late to watch that world premiere of Thriller. I got the album for Christmas that year. There will never be anything like "Thriller," just like there will never be another Rick Baker or another Michael Jackson.
Rick Baker and MJ are legends. Thriller is forever a legendary video that all music videos are compared to. I saw it as a baby, essentially, and was blown away. Everytime it's on, I stop and watch.
I doubt he said, "Little Michael Jackson." Jackson was the biggest star in the world at the time. Playing Mike like he was gone from the scene for awhile.
Exactly, "Off the Wall" was a hit 3 years prior
The guests he gets on this podcast are amazing. I’d love for Tarantino to come on.
The interior theater scene was shot at the “Rialto movie theater in South Pasadena btw.
Imagine seeing Michael on a Joe Rogan podcast.
Michael "My dad had me chemically castrated. HEEE HEEEEEEE"
Joe"with dmt?"
just THINK ABOUT IT
Joe: Michael what about DMT? Michael: heee heee
I love this guys voice. So relaxing.
Nobody has come close to Michael Jacksons all round ability and talent and superstardom
I was pregnant so had the best excuse to stay home and wait to see the first viewing on MTV. Loved it and watched it over and over. Even when my kid was older watching it with me.
I thought Michael Jackson was a werewolf in Thriller. Didn't he howl in the video? Cats don't do that!
@@straitjacket3120 Why didn't I think of that?
Rodney Allen Rob Ager’s analysis video of Thriller goes waaay deep into this exact question

Rick Baker- legend.
I need to find the entire episode now.
Now I'm going to go watch Thriller.
Michael Jackson helped compose the music for sonic the hedgehog 3
Since it was released after he was accused of child molestation, sega disavowed his involvement but still used his work
Still one of the greatest albums ever made PERIOD.
Other than Michael Jackson and all of his super talent and amazing capabilities something so slept on imo is Quincy Jones brillian and beautiful production.

We will never see anything as big as Michael Jackson again. I don’t think it’s even possible now.
His talent as a singer and dancer was something else. I watched him on TV as a kid and his physical transformation over the years was a sad thing. His death and the reasons behind it were negligence on Michael and his doctor.
Thriller blew the doors off the world of music and there will never be another Michael Jackson RIP.

I just received Rick’s phenomenal book. It’s heavy and definitely worth every penny I spent on it. Beautifully done.

I'm going to watch thriller now.💯
🤣😂 @3:24 Rogan is so high! LMAO!
The Thriller video was my first exposure to horror movies. I watched the video when I was 5 years old and it scared me so much I had trouble sleeping after I saw it. The part that scared me the most believe it or not was not the werewolf scene it was the part where the zombie came out of the manhole cover and there was this green light reflecting off his face. That haunted my dreams for about a week that was a creepy looking zombie.
There will never be another Michael Jackson ❤
Great insight intp one of the 20th century's biggest musical events.
I remember that premier very well. It was a 24 hour thing on MTV!
I was waiting for the moment when Joe says that Michael Jackson was chemically castrated

VincentHanna121 he was talking about his vitalgo cause Martin asked about that also dipshit
Peter Szekely he always says that shit
MJ was everything in 1984. No one could touch him. No one. Literally everybody owned *Thriller.* We all did.
Anybody else went and viewed the THRILLER video for the umpteenth time after watching this video?
