I have to admit, I admire Nigel for getting people on to interview who he politically disagrees with. Most of the media are now just discussions between people who agree with each other (including GB news)

If he's talking about Hong Kong, apart from "national security" matters, it is independent but in "national security" matters, it is not. We should have some proportion when we discuss things.

I put the words "national security" in quotes deliberately because that is something that the Chinese government and the present Hong Kong government calls it. It is not that I agree with them.
Many things do fall under national security matters but basically, if you are apolitical, just interested in making a living, life goes on and doesn't change for you.
If you are a business that is engaging in political issues, there could be national security issues to deal with. But if you are just a business in the normal course of work, nothing changed for you and the legal system remains the same.
What has happened in Hong Kong is chilling and the biggest concern now for many is their children's future and education which looks uncertain and dull.
Once again however, if you are settled in life and not interested in politics, your life hasn't changed. Your political rights and political freedoms have been snatched, yes. Economic freedoms however, remain essentially untouched. Now many people can't stand it due to the political aspect and I for one am disappointed by it but the fact remains for many that the economic freedoms in Hong Kong are higher than in many other places.
Whether we like it or not, this has happened and the UK has done the right thing to help people. However, just to make it clear, politics is not everything, education is changing (for the worse) and that's important for many people, so they may look for better educational opportunities. The Hong Kong government is tacitly saying to people to enjoy economic freedoms but to shut up about politics. That is essentially the deal. Courts remain impartial for non-political matters. Not everything is political and national security applies to political matters (including secession which is of course legal in the UK as we can see the SNP in parliament), foreign policy and some criminal matters.
This is the honest answer I can give you.
the judiciary can be as independant as they want , but that dont help if you just disappear
@@harisadu8998 Everything becomes political when even free newspapers have their assets seized and their operations shut down. The very fact that freedom of speech becomes a national security issue for China whenever they deem it to be at cross-purposes with their narrative is a dangerous sign of an orwellian nightmare to come. I lived in Hong Kong, and it pains me to see people using language that states that national security is a seperate issue from day-to-day-life. People must be careful with how they speak, especially with regards to criticising their government, as when speech is compromised in any form the people lose the ability to feel safe under a government that is supposedly on our side. One must speak in hushed tones and behind closed doors, and the feeling of being monitored and surveyed is all-pervasive. To live in fear of expressing ones opinions extends beyond the political realm and into the realm of human rights violations. So yeah, you could shut up and make your money, but ultimately there is more at stake here.

Exactly. Why are China building infrastructure in the South China Sea? Taiwan. Why are they engaging developing countries in 'debt traps' to build ports? For their military. Why were they developing a gain of function virus in their lab? They were testing bio-weapons. China is gearing up to take over the world. Pricks like Vince Cable are why they're getting away with it. If the EU, US and India applied economic pressure the CCP would unravel rapidly. Instead we're sponsoring their expansion.

Once got into trouble at my butlins for trespassing, and they were like *oi, oi* wat/why you cutting through here. It happens everywhere, I can't even visit the gun sight my grandfather last served in which I played in as a child because someone has turned it into their house, diverted the footpath and fenced all the land in.

I once rated Vince ( one of my biggest errors of judgements of a politician. ( and there have been lots of errors, not one has ever lived up to my LOW expectations.

The trouble is you are conversing with someone who doesn’t know the difference between the truth & a stick of celery.
I wish Parliament were this mature, and committed. It gives the viewer a better chance to get a 360 on the issues. The mutual respect here, despite opposing opinion, is definitely the way to go. I agree with other comments listed here, this is a brilliant programme.

Great to see Vince on. Don't agree with him on the EU or China but its good to see a proper political debate not gotcha interviewing. Well done for have a proper debate! Missing so much from the national political programmes on the BBC/ITV/Sky.

I don't think he's a bad man but he doesn't respect the intelligence of the average Briton.
I don't think Vince Cable is a bad person by any means, but he has made some mistakes in the past and I don't agree with a lot of his views. That is politics though. We're not all supposed to agree with each other. You've got to separate the person from the politics sometimes and not make it tribal. Vince does that. Nigel does that. Corbyn never did. Starmer does to a degree, to be fair to him, but the guy is boring, uninspiring and detached from is far-left, communist, virtue-signalling fanbase.

Nigel is a very capable speaker indeed and these programmes are very good. Met Vince myself and an excellent MP, Minister, and good guy.
Unfortunately, like all his ilk, Vince Cable falls back on complaining that people failed to vote as he would like because they're stupid.
However, a civilised debate, and Nigel is excelling in his new role.
You need more international interview partners.
