      Totally agree with your assessment Joe. Thought I was going mad as I had a manual 992 GTS for 6 weeks and sold it as the ride quality on UK roads is simply not good enough. Manic was a great description - felt like I was a pea in a colander getting shaken all over the place. Gone back to a 991.2 GT3. Far better damped and compliant which shows you how poorly suited the 992 GTS is to UK roads. Very disappointing. The 991.1/2 GTS was mega. 992 👎

    I own nearly this exact spec (not green, no buckets) and while I agree that the car rides a little too lively and loud at times, I do love the manual gearbox and wouldn’t have it any other way. I didn’t buy my car as a daily, and this is not the model if you want more of a daily or GT. I bought mine for the vigorous weekend outing and occasional track day, and for those use cases, I think it delivers in spades.

      I'm sure it suits many purposes and is exactly what you want, no denying it's another brilliant 992. Just doesn't work on roads around me and those ratios are silly, you would barely get out of third on track let alone on the road when having fun...

Before it, I had a 992 C2S and while I liked the PDK, for what I use the car for and the roads I drive (twisty Cotswolds a roads) the manual is perfect. I have rear wheel steer in my 992 C2S - I'd put good money on that not being the cause of the 'nervousness' you're feeling from the chassis (laregly because it doesn't tend to actually do anything at moderate speeds, only low for manoeuvres and high for stability), but I would point to the generally higher spring rates on the GTS suspension.

    • @The_Stanman
      @The_Stanman Год назад +7

      Also have a 992 C2S and agree it's not rear steer. I think a big factor was also tire pressure, which needs to be in Comfort setting. Press/dealers always set it in the Autobahn setting for safety but really ruins the ride.

    Long ratios have been a Porsche thing for years. Not sure what the air cooled were like but certainly the 996.2 is pushing 74mph in 2nd and over 100mph in 3rd at the red line. An option for different ratios from the factory to provide better acceleration but a lesser top speed would be good

    Nice review Joe. I recently went back to a 992 after owning a 992 Carrera S and a brief flirt with a g80 Xdrive. This time I went cabriolet for a change but did try a GTS.. the extra 30bhp didn’t seem apparent to me but the ride quality even in the comfort mode tyre pressures was to much for daily imo! the cabriolet is definitely softer than my coupe was but unless your on a track you won’t notice the cornering difference. The 992 capability for hauling ass in any form is staggering.

  • @joshblackmun
    @joshblackmun Год назад +4

    I have a 2022 992 GTS that I ordered and spec'd. The trans was a huge issue and there are always doubts as to wether or not I made the right choice. I ultimately chose the PDK because the Manual was the 7-spd and not the 6-spd from the GT3. Had the trans been the same (6-spd) I likely would have went manual. I ALSO really toiled over the buckets w/ lightweight vs. 18-way seats. I ultimately chose to go 18-way and then upped the spec inside with additional leather for a luxdaily vibe. My rationality was that it is NOT a GT3 and that I should not try to make it one. So, I am waiting on a GT3 or Spyder RS allocation (I actually have a better shot at the Spyder RS). One of those cars will be my bucket car. It is worth noting that no matter what we have (at any level) there is always something more out there. As for me I'm trying to just be satisfied and stop chasing the perfect spec on the perfect car (it does not exist).

    The long gear ratios on the manuals are for 2 reasons, firstly for emissions teats, but secondly to not stomp on the almighty PDK. Part of the reason 0-60 times are so quick with the PDK is because the early ratios on the PDK are lower gear ratios than the manual 7 speed gear box.

    • @Superbustr

Personally, a GT3 touring (my experience is limited to passenger rides in a 991 so also the old skool front axle) is also rather bumpy/bonky, which al settles if your start driving it like you stole it (which makes the car not really a daily driver to my opinion) whereas I could imagine that the GTS you drove, with the turboed 3liter, comes alive much earlier ? Regarding the gearbox, suppose there will be fixes for that pretty soon, bunch of bushings, if it is really that bad. I’m confused by the contradiction of “if you’re going for another gear it’s too fast” vs the subsequent criticism of the long legged first three gears. On one hand you’re concerned that you’re shifting up quickly and building speed too fast, and on the other hand you’re suggesting gear changes are too far apart.
    Also, given you’re comments on the ample torque, it sounds like early shifting is an option for making swift progress at road speeds without losing your license, and using that broad spread on track days when you’re free to hit the redline & be a hooligan.
    Not suggesting PDK isn’t the best fit, but it does seem like the real criticism here is that the car is too fast for the road, rather than it’s manual gearbox,
    Interestingly if you read the early reviews of the McLaren F1 with it’s enormous torque and long legged manual gearbox you’ll note what you’ve observed as a criticism of the GTS manual was seen as a positive (in terms of performance and usability) in the F1.

    Long gearing with the manual cars help conform with emissions Joe and I believe the GT3 Manual gearbox is a very different 'box altogether, shorter ratios and short shift six speed? Rear wheel steering seems fine on my C4S PDK 992 which I bought used from my local(ish) OPC 2 years old 1 owner 3000+ miles and a £30k saving over a new car not to mention I collected it two weeks later so no 2 year +++ wait. There is a reason Porsche had and continues to have a successful race record - PDK. As an owner of more than one Porsche, including a new 992, 991.2 GTS and vintage 911 I offer this advice for the 2 cents it’s worth. First thing let go of the premise impressed upon you by your father or grandfather, that being only real men drive a manual. The modern Porsche IMHO simply is a superb car with the PDK, no human can change gears as fast and you truly get the opportunity to push the car to the fullest extent of its handling characteristics, which are phenomenal. If you really want manual, buy a vintage air-cooled Porsche, nothing beats it. That is why my garage has vintage sitting next to modern. When I want a twisty road and wish to enjoy the mechanical connection with a car, the manual vintage air-cooled car serves it up every time, nothing beats a manual vintage Porsche. But if you want to enjoy a twisty mountain road while pushing a car’s chassis and handling, the Porsche with PDK is always the choice. So forget about what you were told about manual vs. automatic, think about whether you want that mechanical connection or the thrill of pushing a car to its limits. If you want to hear from Porsche themselves, here is a good read:

    Porsche's pricing strategy is incredible.
    It's like you're buying a fully specced car then paying £6k for some bloke with a socket set and spanners to go round removing the seats and trim. Oh and I'll replace the radio with cheap one whilst I've taken the trim off. How do they get away with that?
    From your comments, it would appear that Touring was the sweet spot as a daily driver and if I was driving it every day, I'd probably go 4wd then it's going to be fast in any weather and on any road surface.
    If it's a track toy or weekend blast machine, I'd guess one of the more lairy models might be more suitable.
    Maybe with better options, this model is the sweet spot for value/performance but from your disappointment that car seemed to miss the mark.

    How many Porsche 992 owners are really interested (obsessed) with launch control ? You feel and enjoy the power when overtaking a lorry or going up a mountain road. In other words in real situations. The torque is more useful and ultimately impressive than the outright acceleration. What I suspect is that people who have at their disposal a press car don’t drive them like the owners do. You want to squeeze every last horsepower out of them. Gets tiring after a while. I nevertheless agree with you that the 6 speed manual of the GT3 would have been preferable.

Amazing performance obviously but at the time I traded my $60k M2 comp in on the car and had trouble deciding which one I preferred sadly. Long story short, new M2 on order for $67k. In other words you can't rev the rpm's up to say 5,000 RPM to do a launch? PDK may suit the car better. But it still leaves you with too little to do in a road driving context. PDK is great for track, but for road driving even a suboptimal manual is a zillion times more engaging. What are you supposed to do with this car on a public road with the PDK box? You can't go after the car's limits, they're too high. At least with manual you get some public road-speed engagement and and can get some enjoyment from finessing your shifts and rev matches. With PDK, you're really just going to be driving well within the cars limits and feeling pretty detached.

      I've had both, the 4ltr 718 GTS and previously a 992 C2S. To me they are completely different cars. 718s are fun, small, nippy and with the 4ltr make a great sound and drive, the latter are almost identical volume to a 964 too. The 911 is a more grand touring car, better for longer trips, far nicer looking, more refined and at the end of the day it is a "911", they feel more senior in terms of every aspect of the car but they are getting bulky for UK B-roads. Whilst the GT4 RS & Spyder RS are great looking (and seemingly driving) bits of kit they will always be junior to a full blown 911 GT (as in GT2/3/RS) model, they occupy a different sector of the market. Saying that for British B road driving I'd likely go with a 4ltr 718 GTS manual or PDK, the one I had was PDK but I've a Touring w/ manual and the six speed is exceptional.
