I am 55 now and have followed U2 since dancing like a mad man along with all my mates to the live version of I Will Follow at discos in my local pub back in 1981. Thank you Larry for forming such an iconic and ageless band.
I met him after one of their early concerts (1980, only cost a quid to see them!!!). Super friendly and kind, he was still sitting at his drums after the concert, and addressed myself and a friend, gave us his autograph and then encouraged us to go backstage to meet the rest of the band. Got their autographs too. Knew even then, that U2 were going far. Still remember the energy! And still remember Larry with gratitude.
One thing I love about U2... Despite their undeniable talent as musicians, individually and as a band, there's still something scrappy and raw about them. Starting in a kitchen, just kids, with barely an idea of how to play. But they made it work together, and look what they became! An incredible story and the greatest band of all time.
The Drum beat on Sunday Bloody Sunday was the first time a drum beat meant something to me..it sounded like a semi automatic rifle being fired. I was raised in England in the 70s...all my family were Irish..so that makes me a plastic paddy i guess. This song sums up that time perfectly, the troubles n violence..Bombs..but ultimately, resolution and peace..Gawd bless ya Larry.
Larry is so humble. He says it best himself, he may not be the best, but he's DIFFERENT. I think that makes all the difference. Of course he's not the best drummer, but he's one of the most unique and recognizable and I think that's even more important as a musician. Find your own voice, the Van Halens, the John Bonhams, the Fleas, they are already taken. Be yourself. Congrats Larry, you are the backbone of probably the greatest live band to ever live and ironically, still going as strong as ever. I cherish their longevity as bandmates and I think they do too.
When I started taking my first drum lessons, one of the first things my teacher told me was "the best drummer is not the one who does the most impressive things, the best drummer is the one who always does what the song needs, neither more nor less, "and Larry is of this kind of drummers, he is not the most spectacular but he always does the best for the song and that makes him (for me) one of the best.
During my almost 15 years of being a fan I haven't often heard Larry talk, but now having heard this story told from his perspective and hearing how passionate he is about it and about his work I want to hear more!

I’ve played drums since I was 8 years old. I’m 53 now, so that’s a lot of mileage. Whenever someone asks me what advice I’d give to a drummer starting out, I always quote Larry from the wrap-up question of an interview he did with Modern Drummer magazine in the mid-80’s when they asked him the same question. His response? “Hit ‘em hard.” Great advice from the great drummer of a great band. He seems like a really genuine and humble guy - he deserves all the success he’s enjoyed.
"We made arrangements with each other that we would form a band, we would work together, as a team as a unit and we'll all take responsibility and that we'd take care of each other..." as if I didn't love U2 enough already. How many bands can say they vowed this when they first started? Good people. So much love for you Larry from the Caribbean!

Dude I get it, but did you see how old this person is that wrote that comment? That does make a difference in how you should explain your disapproval of this band and what they stand for. I too am upset about what Bono has done but as the old saying goes " you get more bee with honey than you do with vinegar!" Come on man, use some tact with these youngins, they are being misled, don't just drop a bomb like that when the kids is evidently gushing about how much he loves this band, you could explain your disdain and educate this young man and many many more on why Bono is not what he pretends to be and why he is so evil.

Both Luises, you both need to give your heads a shake. Have you not been paying attention to how badly behaved religion and “religious” people have been throughout history and around the world? Bono, or anyone else, pointing that out from time to time is a good thing. The world would be a much better place without religious hypocrisy. Anyone religious who defends Donald Trump is part of that hypocrisy. That man is clearly morally bankrupt. And Luis, please leave your ignorant homophobia at home next time. It’s a bad look for you. SabNik3001, rock on, bud. Keep playing, keep learning and keep growing. 👍

I wanted to look like Larry in the 80s. No homo, but he was aesthetically beautiful during his unforgettable fire era, in a James Dean way. The fact he's been with his partner since high school, is a testament to his integrity as a man.

His songs are always about. Bono
Bono thinks Bono Feels Bono’s Ideas Bono’s shoes Bono hanging out with pedophiles ???? Yeah like we didn’t notice Mocking Trump you can keep this hypocrite he forgot it was Christians who gave him fame not Larry it was Christians who bought u2 tickets charts and records ....
now his choosing our president for us
Calling preachers bastards in acrobat crooked crosses? Gods country why doesn’t he mock other religions ? so much negativity in Bono profanity in front of families and children Bono Bono Bono Bono Bono yeah life is about Bono
@@LS-ti1rz I get it u2 used to be my #1 band n Don't want to be so sarcasticly stupid but when they promote homosexuality they don't blink when the band plays nonprofit shows and proof is there they only give 1% to beneficiary u2 they don't blink then Bono with his stupid gags trying to be kool kisses other men including Larry publicly why should I care then where would my faith and conviction be how do I explain this to my kid when they both kiss in the lips Bono and Larry kiss.. Oh..oops their just joking honey he's very humble drummer and singer they just humbly love each other
Both Luises, you both need to give your heads a shake. 👍
I will never not love this man. On December 11, 1987, all my dreams came true and my family and I were fortunate enough to meet him. Thanks to Tom Mullally. He is a very grounded and kind person and he will always be so special to me. Congratulations Larry. Well earned
My gratest inspiration for learning Drums. Thank you so much, Larry! You guys make the soundtrack of my life!
Proud to say he's of my age and my generation. Keep going... Keep breaking barriers !!!
Beautiful man 😘😘☘️Larry Mullen xx
I wanted to look like Larry in the 80s. No homo, but he was aesthetically beautiful during his unforgettable fire era, in a James Dean way. The fact he's been with his partner since high school, is a testament to his integrity as a man.
Thank you Larry oh so much. Been one of your biggest fans since i first heard Pride in the name of love. An you remain one of my all time favorite bands. It isn't only for your music, but also for your message. God Bless and congratulations.
What a band, a unit that put Ireland on the map, and also decent sincere people. Larry? We need you back.
Greatest band of all time!
Just saw them a few weeks back in NY. they are outstanding!!!
Bar none!
I wouldn't say best, but certainly great.
Glenn Kirste if you mean that all their songs are the same, you're dead wrong.
Glenn Kirste have you not listened to any of their songs
