    That’s true with the millet. My finches never had Millet before and they loved it the first time they got home. Another thing to feed budgies and all parrots are sprouted seeds. They have more nutrients than plain old seed and are a great way to get a parrot to eat veggies
    Oops I didn’t you were going to talk about sprouts in the video 😆🙊

    Thank you for this critically important video for anyone who is thinking about getting a budgie. It's the best on youtube. All companion animals deserve veterinary care, even the $12.00 budgie. Budgies are the most neglected and abused of all companion parrots and are treated like throw-away pets. You've created a video that helps to curb that abuse. Thank you again!

    My little hen LOVES to bathe in the kitchen sink. She tells me when she is ready for a bath by landing on my shoulder when I am at the sink. She has me well trained. I let the water trickle when she lands on me and she jumps into the sink and lets the water trickle over her. It is adorable.

    Wow!, this is a great video. I wish I knew all this when I first went to the Humane shelter almost 2 years ago and took home 4 budgies that had been left on their front door step. You are absolutely right about finding an avian vet; I have to travel almost 2 hours to get to one and it's costly; $100 plus the medications. At least I got the right size of cages last year and that has been a whole lot better, yet when they are let out, they like to go back into the cage a short time later and do their chirping in the cages.
    You mentioned feeding sprouting; that would be a video I would really appreciate. I am always providing fresh fruit and vegetables but my birds only seem to nibble for bit and then become quiet; as if they are telling me "I want the seeds." They are older birds now, at least 6 maybe 7 years old, so maybe they are just set in their ways. Oh well, I still enjoy them. The "breakfast" video was great; maybe you could make a daytime feeding video also.
    Sterling looks so good and so do all your budgies. It's always great to see Jack Sparrow; your capture of Jack was the first video I came across, yet I don't know how or why; I just came across it, and I still go back to it on occasion.

    As to paper for bottom of cage. Plain white butcher paper without wax can be bought cheaply and it fits better from a roll, cut all of it to make lots of them. This paper is very clean being made for meats and food. You can also get white paper on a roll made to top long banquet tables for very cheap. So much more attractive than newspaper and no ink worries.

    Awesome video! Im researching buying a bird and this video was very much aåpreciated.. Loads to learn and im especially worried about their respitory system (perfumes, cleaners etc). What if I bring home someone wearing much perfume? Will it kill my bird lol. Will my baking murder them etc etc (i have an open kitchen/living room solution)

    Very informative & excellent advice as usual, thank you. I've kept a wide variety of birds for decades & always had a few budgies throughout. They are my favorite as they aren't noisy, moody & nippy as larger parrots & other types of parakeets can sometimes be, can happily live in roomy but smaller cages, exhibit a cheerful personality & are very colorful. They are a great "starter" bird & less demanding for both kids & adults.

    Budgies are so under appreciated! They are amazing little birds, and it’s a budgie who holds the record for words and phrases!
    Pet stores need to do better with selling larger cages and learning about the right diet for parrots. I lost my parrotlet at a young age and I think it’s because I only fed him a seed based diet, thinking that was appropriate. 😓

    Nice video Donna.I do not have any budgies right now but you never know I might get one in the future.I haven’t had any budgies since I was 12 yrs of age.A little budgie was my first bird when I was only 8.Light years gone by.When I moved to my new neighborhood years ago I was fortunate to have moved near a women who bred budgies and canneries.She had indoor flights and outdoor.Both caneries and budgies flew back and forth inside and out .Even when it was snowing . I was amazed.She had all fancy colored too.Some were light purple.Anyway listening to you that brought me way back to early years which I enjoyed.But there’s one thing I never knew.I never knew the light mutations males had pink Ceres and I never knew that the females have white around their ceres.So , I always learn something from you Donna.I always thought the females only had reddish brown Ceres.Thank you for that because if I decide to get a couple of budgies I would like to get 2 males.I love the males they seem to be more vocal and there isn’t any egg issues.Thank you again for the beautiful way in which you express yourself. It’s always a pleasure watching and listening to you.

    • @budgieyy
      @budgieyy 4 года назад +1

      Just clip a fresh leafy green, sliver of cucumber or sliver of another veggie everyday to the cage, then don’t obsess if the bird ate it or not. Make it a habit for yourself to do that, and then you know at least you are offering the right thing to your bird. I found my budgies take to dandelion from the grocery store. If you get it from outside be certain it is from a place where people don’t commonly go, because in a park I saw someone step to the side and they sprayed bug spray all over them self over the grass. So, watch out if you get chickweed or dandelion outside for your budgie that it is from somewhere you know is for certain safe, free from bug spray, pesticides, dog urine, or spray sun tan lotion.

    This is a very informative video, thank you for posting it. Just a few things though...
    Altered dowel rods can be used (I would personally limit it to just 1 though, maybe 2 if its a larger flight cage), just get a knife and scrape it up, to have a bark like texture, and put them in the cages at an angle. So it gives their feet a work out.
    As far as mineral blocks and cuttlebone goes, i'd avoid the ones that are colored and flavored. Unless they use natural flavors and colors. 99% of the time, it is artificial crap they put in those including dyes your bird shouldn't ingest at all. (same goes for pellets you buy, never get ones that contain added sugars, dyes, or artificial flavorings).
    I would have also suggested those bowls that come with 90% of cages are made from plastic, which isn't good for your bird at all, they develop bacteria fast and are hard to clean fully, even if you think you are cleaning them very very very well. Get stainless steel bowls (for food and water)!!! You should still wash them every day, but are a lot better for your birds. Also, if you are going to use those tunnel waterer things, at least get the ones made from ceramic or glass. Plastic is just asking for problems.
    Should also point out, some space heaters, which a ton of people use, can contain Teflon in them as well. Be careful!
    As far as the covering goes, make sure you keep a very close eye on how your bird interacts with said cover, some will chew on the cover, that is just as dangerous as chewing on those rope perches! Not sure if I missed it, did you mention they should be getting 11-13 hours of uninterrupted sleep each night?
    A high quality pellet (Such as Harrison's) is a great way to make sure your parrot gets nutritional values they need daily (ground up veggies, dried up, and pressed into a shape). Much easier to convert them to that over veggies as well (some of the semi ok pellets, like Zupreem Naturals (for budgie sized birds) even look exactly the size and color of seeds (a great way to introduce and convert them over to a taste / texture)). If they wont touch either, I highly suggest sprouting your seeds instead of just giving them seeds as is. If your seeds don't sprout, this means you are feeding your birds dead seed (which sadly, a lot of seed manufacturers do), which is hands down the worst thing you can feed a parrot. More so than seeds that will sprout. I agree with the do this carefully part as well, don't want to give your parrots moldy seed.
    My budgies love their bath time, sometimes it is out of their water dish, sometimes it is from a spray bottle, sometimes it is from their cat fountain (I got that idea from one of your other videos, ended up going with IsYoung's brand though, it had a nice window on the side to see water levels).
    I seriously hate people who consider any pet as disposable. Take them to the vet seriously. You wound' t leave your 3 year old kid in pain and suffering would you? Why should an animal be any different?!!?!?!?!
    LOL I don't eat healthy (I hate their tastes and textures so much) at all, that is on me, but I do make damn sure my parrots all have chop, quality pellets, and new toys.

    Ahh budgies. So tempted to get 2 as there the most avalible but i just dont have the space for an apropreate cage in my small appt. u_u. I can see where some can get botherd by budgie noise, but for me, i usualy watch cockatoos and other large parrots so a budgie is nothing to me XD (I know vids are not the same as irl but still loud) They sure are buisy little buisy boddies lol The way they "talk" is very distintive and interesting to me compared to other parrots. They remind me of little wind up toys

    I live in Kansas and we have alot of cottonwood and elm trees.
    Also have some oak. My question is I like to make my own perches from limbs from the local trees. are these two trees ok with parakeets>?

    Where do budgies find corners in nature? They don't. Round is fine.

    • @Loveofpets
      @Loveofpets  3 года назад

      They have the whole universe in the wild and can choose where they want to sleep.
      It's not the corners that is much of a concern it's the size of the cage as most round cages are small. The perches cross over each other leading to poop build up and the bird usually only has one perch at each height level so they can't hop back and forth. Also some birds go crazy crawling around in a circle.
      Round is fine if it's very large. Zoos have dome ( round enclosures ) and the birds do fine.
      Some of the round small cages have bars that get smaller and smaller as they get to the top which can catch toes.
      The bigger the better. The more horizontal the space the better.
      The Geo bird cage from Omlet is okay. BirdTricks did a video on it.

    Please give me some advice. I got my budgie a week ago, I have owned birds before and watched so many videos before getting her lol. she’s 6 months old already. She has a nice cage, fresh food and water, lots of toys, I speak to her and play her music and leave telly on for her when I leave the room. But she looks so depressed. She rarely ever moves, she makes no noise, she doesn’t rise any of her toys, she just sits facing away from me all day every day. She’s had a little millet off me once on her third day but she won’t have anymore not even through the bars. She used to live in an aviary, is she lonely? Does she need a friend? Or shall I just give her a little more time? It just breaks my heart seeing her so sad. I have left her cage open for hours even when I’m not in the room just to see if she does anything but she just sits in the same spot :( she is eating but only when I’m out the room. Any advice I’d be grateful for please x

    I have a canary winged parakeet i have tried numerous times to cover its cages but it gets mad and climbs all over the cage non stop and gets its nails caught in the cover. It's it alright that it doesn't have a cover?

    Okay, I don't know if this is dumb or not, but is it possible to get a budgie when you already have a pet cat and dog? I REALLY REALLY want one, I've wanted one since I was little, I just don't know if it'd be dangerous for me to get one while I already have a cat and dog. Can I get one? Maybe if I put it in a specific room, the other animals don't have much access to?

    • @Loveofpets
      @Loveofpets  4 года назад +1

      Cats hunt birds so that could be dangerous. I have dogs with my birds and they are fine around my birds but some dogs have a high prey drive and will go after your birds so you have to be careful if you have a high prey drive dog.
