Culture Shock #11: Driving the Bay Bridge for the first time.
Yeah, I have to drive across it every week 💀 You get used to it 😂
I thought it was fun and scenic when I drove across them.
Native Marylander here. I highly recommend visiting Frederick and Annapolis! Both gorgeous places with tons of history. Enjoy! 😊
if you go to Frederick eat dinner at Volt! I say that assuming it's still there.
Changed name. Same owner. Thatcher and Rye.
@@kenster1682 Thatcher and Rye..... sounds British or Disney-esque.
Welcome to Maryland. Don't forget to get your MD state flag shorts. Hope you are enjoying Baltimore.
Raised in the Midwest, finely aged in Maryland, and I think this was pretty well done. One thing you missed though: take a day for Annapolis! Especially if you like history and early American architecture styles, plus it's the gateway to boating on the Bay. Only a 30-45:minute drive from Baltimore.
As we used to say…Baltimore is just a suburb of Annapolis!
Annapolis is also really pretty and worth seeing if you’re here!
100%
I hope you experienced a MD original - the orange crush cocktail! Not to be missed,
I hope you mean from Harborside in West OC, the home of the Orange Crush
My favorite museum in Baltimore is the American Visionary Art Museum..
As a Marylander, I give this review a 10/10. We go hard for so Old Bay. (And **yes** the best blue crab is in a shack in the middle of nowhere Charles County 😂) Fun fact: an episode of X-Files was filmed on Rt 228 past the 228 store in Waldorf … I literally shouted out loud that I know that place when I saw the episode 😊
I've lived in MD my whole life & live on the bay. I have never called it crab. We always say we're eating crabs or getting crabs. Never crab.
My wife is from Baltimore and she approves of this video. 😆
One of the things that shocks me when I leave Merlin is beer and wine at grocery stores and gas stations. Almost none of them here sell adult beverages
Sheetz (gas station) in Frederick sells beer
@@molinaafo Yes, I think the different counties have different rules when it comes to alcohol sales.
Annapolis? How could you not talk about Annapolis?
It’s the best city in the state!!
Hey Mark, as a Maryland native who grew up in this state, I really enjoyed this video.
Thanks T.O.
Welcome to MD! I hope you enjoy America in miniature and I especially hope you get out on the Chesapeake bay! Always enjoy the channel !
Check out the Mason-Dixon Line where you can visit a restaurant that mixes PA Dutch and MD flavors. Scrapple and crab cakes.
Thanks for coming to my state. I live in Frederick (Western MD)…it’s great 👍🏽. In my opinion, there are four regions…Western MD, Baltimore , DC, and Eastern Shore. Baltimoreans are the ones that speak funny (“Murland” lol)
Btw, I’ve been following your channel for a while. Love the energy and information. I’m planning a trip to France, and your videos are super useful.
Yeah I don't says Murland either lol
DC is officially not a part of Maryland.
@@Saadlatif92 I meant DC suburb (Montgomery and PG county)
ANNAPOLIS BEST REGION 😠😠😠😠
4:10 As someone from Maryland yes we eat a lot of crab. However crab hammers are a no no. Especially in the eastern shore you will get mocked for using one. You must use a picking knife.
Try Annapolis next time they have great restaurants and a lot of historical places
Old Bay is so salty! As a Virginian, I found several of these to be pretty amusing and spot on.
ROFL: as a Maryland Kid: Old Bay rocks! I moved away in the 90s and I still use Old Bay every time I make eggs for breakfast. Also I am extremely picky about crab cakes… but you GOTTA do a video on the absolute best city in Maryland: Annapolis!
As someone from Maryland, I can tell you a lot of the trouble in OC during the summer is from people out of state, especially all those people from the Philly/NJ area. But yea kids from Baltimore also contribute to the problem.
Lol😂 stop lying
The kids from B-more city are too poor to go down there and the kids from the county are too bourgeois they’re going to Va beach and Myrtle beach … ask me how I know 😂😂😂
There are two wonderful National parks in Maryland, Catoctin Mountain Park in the west and Assateague Island National Park in the east.
11th shock of MD...that "metallic pee" BMW behind you. Spot on as usual. Yes, the state flag is everywhere and in my gazillion times in the state, I have yet to see it flown upside down which seems easy to do.
Booking my tickets now. Love the channel.
Spot On !
This was fantastic 😁
Hey Mark, awesome video
Swallow Falls are great! 👌
There are a lot of missing things here, but good job overall for a short video. I would say Baltimore is no more dangerous than Chicago, DC, San Francisco, etc. All of those cities are having issues right now. I recently went to the annual German Christmas market in the harbor, and it was wonderful. Currently, Harborplace is about to undergo a complete transformation that should revitalize the harbor area. Some of the nice places to visit downtown include the Mount Vernon district, Harbor East, and Fells Point. As for Ocean City, it's a town of 10k residents but in the summer there are 350,000 people there. It's not unsafe, but when you have that many people from all over the country in one little town it can be crazy at times. Honestly, it's the people from NYC and New Jersey who have brought problems to OC in recent years. And Mark, 99% don't pronounce Baltimore and Maryland the way you do. That's a small group of old grandmas who talk like that.
Baltimore born and raised , something that i find most people are shocked to find out is that maryland has alot of great winerys and vinyards.
Well done!
I am a native Marylander, and yes, I will put Old Bay on chicken salad, tuna salad, potato salad, potatoes, scrambled eggs, grits, and fish. It's an all-purpose seasoning, and really, a substitute for salt. In addition to the places he mentioned, I would recommend visiting the dozens of cool towns along both sides of the bay, from Cambridge, Easton, Oxford and St. Michaels up to Chestertown and Chesapeake City on the Eastern Shore, and Havre de Grace, Annapolis, North Beach, Chesapeake Beach, Solomons Island, Leonardtown and St. Mary's City on the western side. These towns have waterfront access and cool little pubs and restaurants. You will get a good taste of life is like in the counties along the Bay. But if you want a real taste of what that life is really like, book a weekend at a B&B on Smith Island. That's the real deal.
The end was so funny! :D
I mean, it is a pretty cool looking flag...
Make sure you visit Frederick, MD and specifically Carroll Creek,
Just FYI, restaurants the serve steamed crabs don’t use Old Bay. It is usually the J O brand.
This video was pretty on point. I was surprised at how accurate this video actually is …we definitely put old bay on EVERYTHING 😂
Just so you know…If you can afford to you eat crabs year round. Also most of the people you come across in OC aren’t from MD.
Cunningham Falls and Greenbrier
It's crabs not crab!!! Lol. And true marylanders eat crabs year round, we just buy them from suppliers that ship them from Florida & Texas. Also old bay on scrambeled eggs!
❤❤❤
Mark you need to try the Old Bay Hot seasoning. I put it on everything. Not talking about the hot sauce. Also the Eastern Shore has some nice small towns to check out on the way to OC.
As a New Yorker who has lived in Maryland for 17 years, I still don’t get the Old Bay thing. What you’re saying is 100% true about it! People here are obsessed. However, I don’t even own Old Bay. 😮. We actually assume Maryland is just the part near the Beltway. And Ocean City.
Old bay reallyvgrew on me while i was there
@@woltersworld it’s fine I guess. I like it on crab but I honestly have no idea what to do with it. But people here really do love it!
Maryland has everything except a desert. I'm from SC and I thought OH BOY summers must be like Connecticut or NH - WRONG! Sometimes it's as if I never left SC! It might be psychological but as soon as you cross the state line into Pa it feels cooler or less humid :)
If you go to the eastern shore, where everyone says y'all, Easton, St. Michaels, and Oxford are pretty idyllic. Steamed crabs are great I just wish they weren't priced higher than filet mignon!
Hey Mark, i just spent a week in Arizona (Phoenix, Sedona, Page), and as a german (who was never there before), it was a little tricky in advance to find out which cities / areas are a must see, and which ones are totally touristy (Sedona). Could you maybe make a new video about Arizona!? The ones on your channel are 10 years old, and some things seem to have changed (for example regarding Antelope Canyon)
I'm from Gilbert, AZ and it's a pretty nice area to visit if you ever decide to go back there. Also Greer and Flagstaff are worth checking out as well.
If in Western Maryland, go to a Roy Rogers and get a roast beef sandwich! You WILL find out why if you do so!
There's so much more to Maryland than the City of Baltimore or Ocean City.😊 Annapolis is the state capital. People even confuse the cities in Baltimore County with the City of Baltimore. Driving through the city of Baltimore is crazy any time of the day & most nights.
I grew up in Western-ish Maryland (Brunswick to be exact) but live in Phoenix, AZ now. Most people here don't realize how different western Maryland is from the eastern part of the state. I don't think I ever even tried crab until I was an adult. The town I grew up in has more in common with West Virginia. Also, on more than one occasion I've told someone here I'm from Maryland and then they get it confused with Massachusetts.
I hate Baltimore, to dangerous......
I 100% agree with all of this because I was born and raised in MD. Though, I don’t like crab even though I’m from Maryland.
I live in Is frederick county Maryland in a town called Middletown. I've read in a book one time. That George Washington said that Middletown was the most beautifulest town he has ever been in. The Western side of Maryland Is very beautiful.
Lol…the on going debate from the DC area, who has the worst drivers. Maryland are the defending champions.
well DC is on land taken from maryland so....
Have you ever considered Tangier Island Virginia?
Oh god I think Mark's an Old Bay addict now, looks like he was going into a meltdown over it at the end there hahaha
JO Seasoning.
Maryland is definitely on my travel list! Do you plan on making any videos about Australia?
In the video Mark said you can’t combine fudge and cookie in a word and not get banned from RUclips.
I’ve never heard this before.
Is this really true?!
MD state flag is the best
The one thing to remember is that anywhere within 15 miles of Washington DC is NOT the Maryland you're talking about. While they do like the blue crabs, the areas closer to DC have their own sports teams (Commanders and Nationals) and aren't necessarily fans of either the Ravens or Orioles. Also, and this is very annoying to me, there are no shaved ice/snowball places when you get closer to the DC metro area. I wish we had them, I love snowballs. In addition, they aren't as crazy about Old Bay as other parts of Maryland.
Im a Marylander lol
0:20
Old Bay is basically colored salt
You better hide... they will come get you for slander like that 😉
Your right Mark. It’s more than colored salt. Try the Old Bay Hot seasoning. Game changer to put everything
Mark I love ya brother, but com’on man…how do you not talk about Annapolis? Or St. Mary’s City? Or the Eastern Shore towns of St. Michels or Chestertown when doing a Maryland episode?
Those will be in the donts of maryland. This was more of a fun shocks video.
I'm from Maryland and didn't use old Bay a d don't know anyone who does.
So YOU'VE NEVER had STEAMED CRABS!! MD CRABS are STEAMED, NOT BOILED. Fishers Popcorn originated in Ocean City MD!! I KNOW, Maryland native and resident. MD PRIDE!!! I ROCK IT EVERYDAY. Hint: FIsher's Popcorn is known for their caramel corn. The original
its important to also make sure the flag is hanging correctly.. heaven forbid you hang it upside down.. we will notice and we will comment about it.
as another marylander its true we alao put old bay on pizza some of us at least
Old Bay is a Baltimore thing. Other parts of Maryland not so much. Montgomery County, the largest county in the state, is not an Old Bay region at all.
That’s because Montgomery County is more like DC. Old Bay is found in a majority of the state. Just like scrapple is a favorite in MD. ES is nigh on both.
That’s true… I hear people talk about Old Bay a lot and see it on random things when we go to OC, but I personally have no old bay in my house and no clue what to do with it. I thought it was because I am a transplant.
You forgot the equally important obsession w Under Armor clothing. The old bay- yup not exaggerating one bit. They have it in the ice cream too
and a lot of places make crabs shaped chocolates sprinkled with old bay.. ive seen younger people saying "if you can eat it, put old bay on it, if you cant eat it, put the flag on it"
Ok, Old Bay. I've lived near Baltimore for 30 years and hardly ever see Old Bay except with sea food. You can get Old Bay on burgers and fries and the like, but I don't think many people do. Utz sells potato chips ("crab" chips) with Old Bay; someone must like them, but they're much higher salt than regular chips, and, well, pretty terrible. Old Bay is easily avoidable, even on seafood.
1:26 I honestly think that Ohio has the coolest and most unique State flag. I admit that I like it even better than the State I live in, California.
imagine knowing ocean sh*tty but not annapolis 😡😡😡😡😡😡
You should make a video on Joe Biden's state, Delaware!
