Another heavy hitter in mythology covered on smt lore! Cu Chulainn or formerly Setanta is a popular figure in mythology and a demon shin megami tensei does a great job representing. Once again smt lore hits it out of the park with this depiction, not only with Cu Chulainn lore but also his childhood form Setanta and his relation to Scathach as well. A great representative of the neutral alignment, Cu Chulainn is a protector of the fairies if the lore in game is to be believed, but shin megami tensei left out a lot of important details to his backstory, and you'll learn all about it in this smt lore video. Irish mythology in particular is a very interesting topic to research as not much is known for certain, but the stories in the Ulster Cycle and specifically Cu Chulainn are some of the most well remembered and interesting. Stories of gods and demons are nothing new, especially for shin megami tensei but Irish mythology has some uniqueness in their pantheon. With Druids and a tangible relationship with their lords, their union created Cu Chulainn. This smt lore video will not be going too deep in the tuatha de dannan, and there is much more to the exploits of Cu Chulainn lore than the amount we go over, but it's a great primer to get started in understanding the Irish legend himself.
Cu Chulainn is one of Shin Megami Tensei and Persona’s most popular demons. Despite this not many can say who he is, what he did, or even where he’s from. An important figure in Irish mythology and a story, while not being known by many people, will be familiar to those well versed in history. A story of tragedy, betrayal, and battle frenzy. This video will be going over the life of folklore legend and explaining the progression of the child of prophecy Setanta, to the godlike warrior Cu Chulainn. Without any further ado, let’s learn about Irish myth.

@@Tony4You I forget the ballad that covers this but it's a common belief on the isles that becoming a guardian of faeries changes you physically. Namely what we commonly call elves in fantasy literature. Tam Lin is also known as the Elf Knight. Also of note he is rescued from the Queen of Faeries in the ballad Tam Lin which is from the Scottish border. We'll never know for certain but it seems like someone heard the tale of Cu Chulainn and possibly made Tam Lin based after his life ends in his story. This thing supposedly happens a lot and it wouldn't surprise me if somehow it was kept around because someone recognized the inspiration. Especially with how popular Cu Chulainn is in both his time and after. It reminds me of that one knight from Arthurian myth that had the same thing happen to him and has stories inspired by what is obviously the knight of the round table.

I love how out of all the Achilles stories, which are all mythological being portrayed as near invincible beings who have a key weakness to pass down the message of “no man is invincible”, the Irish just have a version whos just unstoppable and his weakness not only is super impossible to capitalize on compared to Achilles heel or Siegfried’s single spot on his back from the leaf, but even when it’s exploited it doesn’t stop him.

I used Cu chulainn in Nocturne and i kept him on my team up until the fight with Noah, truly one of the best smt designs.
Yeah, even in SMT 1 his design is still one of my fav, he's always in my team too in the final dungeon of SMT 1 and Cerberus/Pascal.
Good history and mythology videos as always, Tony, but it just clicked in my head: why the hell do gods always keep knocking up women for no reason? Like, imagine staying in someone's cabin for a night and then waking up pregnant because God decided "lol, have my baby." Eugh. Though Cu Chalainn and Satanta being related is something I never knew!
I only found out in a sidequest in IV where Schatach asks you to defeat Setanta so that his power doesn't get into his head 😁

Yeah people can't help but notice a trend with gods getting a little too forward with mortal women lol. Though Dechtine seemed ok with it in the second story
It shows the idea that a woman's capacity for giving birth is a bridge between mortality and godhood. It's a relationship between the temporal and the infinite which centers upon the womb.
The reason for this correlation is because that's why people make babies too, as a way of reaching for the infinite in spite of their mortal limits.

Fun Fact: In Brazilian Portuguese, Cú means "Asshole".
Also, while Cu Chulainn was training with Scathach, he ended up sleeping with her daughter, Uathach and given his immense strength, accidentally broke her fingers. Her screams of agony alerted her actual lover, Cochar Croibhe, and forcing the two men to fight. After killing Cochar, Cu Chulainn agrees to take his place and become Uathach's lover, with Scathach promising to marry her daughter off to Cu Chulainn.

honestly the easiest summary to this is “Irish Heracles”. Man had horrible luck in love, killed his only family and best friend, was a strong warrior fated to die young and had to be tricked to be killed (he broke his Geas due to Medb’s tricks).

@@JinYo265 They were vows Celtic warriors took. For example, Cu Chulainn vowed never to eat dog meat as one of his penances for slaying the Hound of Culann. This vows would grant them a boon or blessing so long as they were not broken. As part of the plan to slay Cu Chulainn, Queen Medb made many tricks and crafted several situations that forced him to slowly break all of his vows, thus weakening him to a point he could be defeated.
Think of it like Delilah cutting Samson’s hair in the Biblical story.

@@JinYo265 It’s just an alternative spelling I believe. I think the idea to call the ability “Geass” is because for the Geass users their abilities can be both a blessing and a curse. The core of an Irish Geas is that they are considered both a curse and a blessing and that they are vows or contracts with specific commands. I forgot to mention the whole irony of Cu Chulainn’s vows is that he has one that forbid him from eating dog meat, and another that forced him to eat any food offered to him by a woman. You can see how Medb screwed him.
I used to call him the Irish Tarukaja man because of all the grinding to get good fusions for the final Eden section.
I know a fan-parody series of something not-MegaTen that he appears in called him "basically Irish Heracles" which is not inaccurate.
You know, the first time I got Sentanta to evolve into Cu Chulainn in NOCTURNE, I really hoped that the guy would evolve again into a Whiskey Bottle.
I remember of the Cu Chulainn because of a random fate/stay night video then wanted to know a little more then watched the one from OSP (Don't worry the pronunciation is always difficult).

You're epic
there are multiple interpretations of Cu Chulainn's death. One was due to wounds suffered in battle especially his tragic battle with his training partner, Ferdiad, during his time with Scathach. This was the time that the Gae Bolg was actually used. Ferdiad dies a tragic death humiliated by Queen Medb and killed by his best friend.
The other is the one mentioned in the video but the death was even more metal than was talked about. Cu Chulainn tied himself to a standing stone *WITH HIS OWN INTESTINES* so he could face his enemies in battle. His enemies are unsure if he is alive or not until a raven lands on his shoulder. The raven is believed to be the Goddess of a Warrior's Death, Morrigan (basically she is the grim reaper for soldiers which our boy here had a lot of shenanigans with). Once it became clear that Cu Chulainn is dead, they attempt to chop his head off but suddenly, his body starts exploding with holy light and when the light fades, the would be decapitator has his arms lopped off.
I’ve always wanted to make a series inspired by Celtic mythology and Cu Chulainn happens to be a focal point for it. It’s always nice to get a reminder of what I’m striving for.
