- On the 20th of July, 2020, the gaming community received its first clear look at the upcoming title, Shin Megami Tensei V, via a new trailer. The teaser starts off strong, showing a cutscene featuring the demon lord Lucifer boldly proclaiming “The God you worship is dead.” Now, this wasn’t something totally out of bounds in previous mainline SMT games. The Abrahamic God, YHVH, is referenced in many of those games, in some of them you can even kill him yourself, but still he’s generally presented as a pretty strong guy. Among some fans, he’s even considered the final boss of the whole MegaTen franchise. While I don’t think that’s the authorial intent, there is something to be said about his prominence in the series to make someone think that in the first place. I mean, of course, he’s God, right? So why is he not around now in SMTV? This must have been a deliberate choice by ATLUS, but what does it mean for the game’s narrative? How can we make sense of the world of Shin Megami Tensei without a God?

Excellent video, love the added context/political undertones each Megaten game has. Around 15:00, you bring up how, despite God being dead, many of the players don't go against his rule due to their complacency. I'm actually working on a vid comparing the philosophy of Michel Foucault to IV's plot, and I found this eerily similar. The idea of docile bodies/disciplinary power that creates a lack of action.
Sounds good, looking forward to your vid
if you think about it max stirner is just walter in real life
wake up babe, new kid capes video just dropped

I actually am very interested in the idea of a direct sequel to smtv, with the protagonist practically separating his world from the rest of existence and the great will creating countermeasures against the protagonist, i think it would be a great sequel to the message of the true ending
Kazunari Yamai, result of fusing Kazuyuki Yamai and Kazunari Suzuki
I was hoping no one would notice lol. Yamai's, Suzuki's, and Doi's names all get mixed up in my head and I didn't even realize I misspoke until after I uploaded.
me: I hope kidcapes posts today, that'd be neat

The Great Will whispered in my ear last night while I was sleeping. I knew what had to be done...
A lot of newer fans and people who aren’t that knowledgeable about the lore are under the impression that YHVH is the main villain of the series and I was guilty of this too it’s easy to think that way with how poeple talk about the games. but the thing is that he only actually makes an appearance in a whopping 2 games and even then one of those games is a what if story.
Pretty neutral-aligned message there, definitely didn't expect it.
There's ways the message of the game applies to the other alignments (especially Law), but I'll get into that in a separate video down the line. Besides, my feelings on Neutral generally are pretty well documented on this channel I think.
@@KidCapes yeah I think the video about Yuko Takao makes it the clearest.
Stirner doesn't care for neutral (humans) either: The divine is God's concern; the human, man's. My concern is neither the divine _nor the human_ not the true, good, just, free, etc., but solely what is 'mine,' and it is not a general one, but is - 'unique,' as I am unique. Nothing is more to me than myself!
@@DarkAdonisVyers who mentioned Stirner?
Anyway, I think this is only partly true for V. After all, it ends with everyone being left to fend for themselves in Daat because there is no appeal to higher principles which would unite society.
@@2tehnik The beginning of the video mentioned Stirner.
Max Stirner Best Chaos Rep
Nah. To me itz Jimenez. That dude basically embodies it.
Always been a follower of Law despite the clear bias against it and its unpopularity, so I find it interesting that so many people reject neutral and thus by extension this idea this time around.
I think it mostly comes down to the execution of the endings. Especially in True Humanity's case, people weren't expecting to essentially kill half the people they thought they were helping.
I have a review of SMTV as well if you'd be interested in that. ruclips.net/video/Co6iiNmnNHY/видео.html

Good video but maybe double check the pronounciation of ennui

in the absence of God only the strength of man is left, with its terrible consequences.
Though I feel like using SH2 in any capacity in this discussion is kinda pointless given how most of those themes pointed out here were simply just stuff seemingly slapped on in the loading screens whereas they were never actually tackled in the game itself. Similarly, with how unfinished SMTV was and how lacking the game was in those themes they initially presented I feel like that game faces a similar problem in this discussion.
Also, I can't help but notice how SMTV basically just took and copied the worldbuilding of the Shinza Bansho series for its own world over the whole Throne business.
So with Vengeance on its way, do you have any thoughts on the themes of the bull and snake god that was brought up?
I was already working on another video about SMTV and it turns out that it might be related that actually 😅
@@KidCapes Neat! I can't wait to hear your thoughts about it because I don't even remember any deities referencing bulls in the standard version of the game.
@@leadinteaDemeter mentions the bull gods in the latter half of her questline
Interesting video....to bad this game isn't on PS4.
Very interesting. Thanks again for the video.
