i think this video gives a better analysis of orpheus than any other video out there bc they all focus on myth orpheus when that one doesnt have many parallels to be traced to the protagonist other than DEATH (which is why most people just explain who he is and skip over how he connects to mc lmao), orphism orpheus really seems like the one the devs drew inspiration from
In the direct thematic evolution sense there is also the matter that Orpheus failed in saving his wife from death, while Jesus succeeded via his own sacrifice. Which ties in not only to Makoto's actions in the endgame but also ties into why Chirdori survives in the PSP remake and the canon timeline (which conflates the 3 versions into one) as seen in Arena.
We must be careful with avoiding reductionism when discussing ancient religion, the influence of greco-roman thought on early christian writers is undeniable, since such writers came from the hellenized Roman Empire. Saying the Christianity is just a derivation of Orphism is just as wrong as saying that greek philosophy had no influence at all on Christianity. When approaching these topics we must steer clear from our own ideologies in pursuit of the truth. I think that Kid Capes did a genuinely good job and I appreciate it a lot.
I'll probably make another P3 video at some point, but it won't be for a while. I have a bunch of videos similar to this about other MegaTen games on my channel if you're interested in those tho. The Soul Hackers 2 vid is probably the closest since it covers Gnosticism, which has a bunch of parallels with Orphism
@@KidCapes Oh I'll definitely give them a rewatch. I read a book recently called Hamlets Mill that uses the story of Hamlet to trace back mythological roots through various cultures and your video reminded me of it. Worth checking out if you're not familiar but take it with a grain of salt.
I've never heard of that before, I'll check it out. I actually bought a copy of the Golden Bough from a thrift store a couple months ago in prep for another video funnily enough tho. They seem like similar books.
@@KidCapes Oh yes it's absolutely a very similar book in concept. Though with Hamlets Mill I find it has the same problem with the Hero of a thousand faces where it does make a compelling argument but it's very much trying to simplify something extremely complex.

Yea, that's exactly why I made it. I think I only saw like one video that even referenced this aspect of Orpheus.
A new KidCapes already???

Having patience helps with Tartarus but with the rest the games supports itself and doesn't bore. Imo it's better than what people give it credit for.
