The intro gives me chills to this day. I remember in 1992 when I got my first cassette hearing this then when Release came on I was all "Wait thats the 1st song" haha The memories from the past 30 years has been tied to this opening track for me.
I love how that and then release like.. connects at the end :) I found that out a few nights ago on my cd player and it was so cool, it’s like a hidden track!
I admit it, what's to say I'll relive it, without pain Backstreet lover on the side Of the road I got a bomb in my temple that is gonna explode I got a .16 gauge buried under my clothes, I play Once upon a time I could control myself Once upon a time I could lose myself Oh try and mimic, what's insane I am in it, where do I stand? Indian summer I hate the heat I got a backstreet lover on the passenger seat I got my hand in my pocket so determined discreet, I pray Once upon a time I could control myself Once upon a time I could lose myself Once upon a time I could control myself Once upon a time I could lose myself Once upon a time I could love myself Once upon a time I could love you Once Once Once Once Once Once Yeah yeah yeah yeah
i LOVE the crash cymbal when Eddie sings "gonna explode," in the pre-chorus. It's a crash cymbal on the 3rd beat of the measure, which is a highly unusual place to crash but extremely effective here at propelling the groove and accentuating what Eddie is singing about (a bomb in his temple that's about to go off).
A question for anyone who sees this: Do you know someone/anyone who hates this album? Just curious, as it's widely regarded as one of the greatest ever recorded and, for me, it's one of the best I've ever heard. Today, I realized that somebody close to me absolutely hates the album. I get that people like what they like but I'm struggling with this one. It's weird that a music lover wouldn't like this, right?
I've met a fair amount of people who dislike this album as well as every single seminal album from the Grunge Big Four. Because let me tell you, as someone who lives in Seattle, nobody craps on the rock music that 90's Seattle created than a millennial aged edgelord who was still rubbing beans into their high chair and singling along with Barney the Dinosaur when Lane Staley was vomiting his soul on stage to other disenchanted youth about being dopesick, in a toxic relationship, broke and sleeping on the street. The kid who wasn't quite old enough in 1992 to pick up a guitar of their own or lived enough personal trauma in a small town with a hard to pronounce, Native tribal name, to appreciate the fact that regular dudes and chicks jamming in garages and woodsheds all over Washington State within a 100 mile radius of Seattle (and beyond!) were creating music that resonated with people the whole world over. Riffs as drenched in 9 months of rain, train hopping, heroin abuse and seasonal affective disorder as they were traditional blues licks and the very heavy metal it helped destroy for a time. No. Nobody trashes Pearl Jam or Nirvana more than that kid from the Pacific Northwest who just hates on it because it was somehow popular when they were a kid. Maybe their older brother grew his hair long and ended up splitting town, now forever estranged from his family. Or maybe big bro OD'd and is long cold and dead, buried in a Bremerton or Tacoma cemetery. But maybe... Just maybe, that kid should give these classics an earnest chance and really listen to the heart and soul played behind the anguish. Maybe they'll find some records as timeless and appealing as anything Led Zeppelin or Black Sabbath, Hendrix, The Doors or Bowie ever pressed into vinyl..... Just maybe. ;)
@angiegorka8678 kinda shocked me when i discovered the meaning, and was written as a 3 part mini opera...Alive, Once and Footsteps. Footsteps is him in prison or an asylum...its been a while, since I read about it so its a bit foggy, those were my heavy pot smoming days..lol..fun times though. But I do know these are the first 3 songs Vedder wrote and presented to the band...when they read the lyrics they asked him to join, they previously had only recorded instamental tunes.
I come back to this album after 18 years. Back then I was typical "angry" and "rebelious" teenager, now I'm adult, with "live problems"- my chronic illness, my parents poor health, temporary unemployment, lack of money (you know, doctors...)...I feel Eddie anger even more now. I forgot how good is to scream to the music which is so raw, true, simple. My favourite album to listen in my vehicle
I remember I borrowed the CD from a friend in 1992 or 1993. Then on my way back home I slipped with my skateboard 'cause the road was wet and slippery, so the jewel case broke. I always remember this when I hear a song from this album and it feels like it was just an hour ago. Brains are funny things when it comes to music and memories.
I love this song based on the way an individual is coming to grasps that “oh shit I’m out of control” and it just gradually slips down the rabbit hole and you can’t control yourself anymore.
I love this song still. Still one of my all time favorites. At the time, I was in a failing relationship that I was struggling to make work because I'd been taught at a young age that you go to college, meet a guy, get a degree in nursing or teaching (just in case he died -- never divorce -- and you needed to support your kids) but stay home and be supported. You'd be together for the rest of your life. *Never! Never divorce!* So even though the relationship was bad, I still fought to keep it together. My excuse was, besides the earlier indoctrination, I was young and stupid. I no longer involve myself in these types of relationships, preferring to be alone. *So!* To make a long story short, the line "I'm still alive" spoke to me very strongly. While I was mourning the end, I realized I was still alive, and as long as I was alive, there was hope for better. Not what Eddie Vedder meant when he wrote it, but that was my take as well as many, many others. He gave us hope to go on. Thank you for that Eddie, even if we misinterpreted. ❤
In 1991 the " Seattle Scene" exploded! I didn't know who all the bands were and I thought Pearl Jam was Nirvana lol! I got all confused between Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, Pearl Jam, Nirvana and Screaming Trees! Wow, what I time it was to discover all these great bands!
I happen to be an ex professional musician. Retired. When this album was released, I was right around my peak. David Abruize or something like that was a very innovative drummer with tons of meaningful stick work. I remember enjoying this amazing album 😊
the perfect first song. I remember when I was a kid, my dad played this CD, I find the name of the band funny, not expecting much, after being introduced to Nirvana. And then, fell in love imediately
I was in my early teens, the exact time is unimportant. While all my friends were losing their collective $#!& over Nirvana (and, to the band's credit, understandably so), I was tripping on the tracks these hometown heroes had put on the air. I got my hands on the cassette, and I could've just as easily cued up my favorite songs off the album, but what would be the fun in that? I was not prepared. While songs like Jeremy, Black, and Evenflow had resonated with me, this song, this most epic of opening tracks, transported me. While I'd recognized the influence of those other songs as being the urban decay I had experienced in my early childhood, this track recontextualized the entire experience, painting my city not as mere concrete and steel, but as a fallen kingdom, a once-fantastic realm somehow stripped of its magic and glory - and these musicians and their ilk, as the bold adventurers seeking to restore it against long odds and dark forces. To understand the rest of the album - indeed, perhaps the rest of the grunge era, and all that has come since - one must first understand this song, a fitting prelude to all the other tragic stories yet to be told. Stories that are far from over...
Got in a car crash while this was playing. First real car crash, totalled my first and only car. I'm gonna be broke by the end of this. Just hope this album didn't explode in my CD player
So this is the 30th anniversary digital remix/remaster but doesn't RUclips compress digital audio a lot? It does sound great through my studio monitors but I'd be keen to know the sample rate and depth.
There’s something different about the mixing of this song that must’ve been recently made on iTunes. It’s especially apparent at the 2:20 mark for this solo. If you listen to this version and iTunes version back to back, you’ll hear the difference.
Got a16guage buried under my clothes.. a very underrated and beautiful little shotgun that nobody ever talks about..I had one growing up, but it was too expensive to operate. 12guage shells were much cheaper 😊
Opening a debut album with that track is a statement on its own.
This song starts all Pearl Jam history. ❤️ 30th aniversary
I’d say Temple Of The Dog ~ Hunger Strike predates this, but I get what you mean :)
Magic
Wow...30 years 😮💨
I'll never forget the first time hearing it
that intro, they had a good run
The intro gives me chills to this day. I remember in 1992 when I got my first cassette hearing this then when Release came on I was all "Wait thats the 1st song" haha The memories from the past 30 years has been tied to this opening track for me.
Does the intro to "In the Air Tonight" give you chills as well?
Same! I won't forget this song for as long as I live!
I always remember Mortal Kombat because of this intro
I love how that and then release like.. connects at the end :) I found that out a few nights ago on my cd player and it was so cool, it’s like a hidden track!
One of the best Pearl Jam's songs
I admit it, what's to say
I'll relive it, without pain
Backstreet lover on the side
Of the road
I got a bomb in my temple that is gonna explode
I got a .16 gauge buried under my clothes, I play
Once upon a time I could control myself
Once upon a time I could lose myself
Oh try and mimic, what's insane
I am in it, where do I stand?
Indian summer I hate the heat
I got a backstreet lover on the passenger seat
I got my hand in my pocket so determined discreet, I pray
Once upon a time I could control myself
Once upon a time I could lose myself
Once upon a time I could control myself
Once upon a time I could lose myself
Once upon a time I could love myself
Once upon a time I could love you
Once

Once

Once
Once
Yeah yeah yeah yeah
@@ESL-O.G. he tried lol
It was this track that started the whole journey for me 30 years ago. Such vivid memories are coming back to me now…
This tune made me feel like I never felt before. I was an angry kid who wanted somebody to listen. Noone did. I still get that feeling at times
i LOVE the crash cymbal when Eddie sings "gonna explode," in the pre-chorus. It's a crash cymbal on the 3rd beat of the measure, which is a highly unusual place to crash but extremely effective here at propelling the groove and accentuating what Eddie is singing about (a bomb in his temple that's about to go off).
I thought it was about 'a young man descending into madness and going on a murder spree'.

Can't be unliked
ita vero!!
Most people have awful taste in music these days, everyone at my school listens to trash
That loved one has no taste in music lol

It really is one of the greatest opening tracks.
An incredible way to start the best debut album in rock music history.
Best Grunge sound of 90’Years.
Tank’s Pearl Jam🔝🤟🏻
VERY Underrated Song. Love This Song! When Driving, Listening to this Song. SLAMMING Though The GEARS!
"underrated"? It's easily one of their most popular songs, so hardly underrated.
90'a were all about Pearl Jam for me. I saw them three times, once at the Garden in NYC. I can still feel it today.
Just pure talent , his vocals have a very raw sounding tone ,just brilliant
My favorite band of all time
Esto es una maldita obra de arte...
La agresividad en la voz de Eddie en este álbum es otro nivel.
For anyone wondering the song is about a young man's decent into madness after sleeping with his mom....which is what the song "Alive" is about.
I didn't know that. That is insanely deep.
@angiegorka8678 kinda shocked me when i discovered the meaning, and was written as a 3 part mini opera...Alive, Once and Footsteps. What an opening song for an epic album! 🎸🔥🔥🔥

Full of energy that's powerful! Song about undiscovered human potential.
such a great album.
Ten was my first cd that my parents bought me (requested of course) greatest gift of my life
I remember I borrowed the CD from a friend in 1992 or 1993. Then on my way back home I slipped with my skateboard 'cause the road was wet and slippery, so the jewel case broke.
I always remember this when I hear a song from this album and it feels like it was just an hour ago.

Same here
I love this song based on the way an individual is coming to grasps that “oh shit I’m out of control” and it just gradually slips down the rabbit hole and you can’t control yourself anymore.
Such a great opener!
Imagine buying Pearl Jam's debut album and this is the first thing you hear. Holy shit, it's so spectacular!🤘
I did that. I still remember opening the CD long box.
One of the great debut’s from that time period. Not a bad cut on the whole album!
Eso pasó conmigo
I love this song still. Still one of my all time favorites. I will playing this all day!

What an opener. This set the tone for the years that laid ahead
Mi vida cambió al escuchar las guitarras rasposas, baterías superpotentes y melodías de voz de este albúm. Gracias PJ
I can't control myself when I'm listening to this song over and over and over again!
This takes me back to my childhood I was about 10. They played this song a lot at Wayne's world at Carowinds theme park in NC/SC. Great memories!
I agree, I still use that as my wake up music and still play this on druns
I happen to be an ex professional musician. Retired. When this album was released, I was right around my peak. David Abruize or something like that was a very innovative drummer with tons of meaningful stick work. I remember enjoying this amazing album 😊
Dave Krusen was the album drummer for Ten
Masterpiece 😍🔥

This song brings back alot of nostalgia
My absolute favourite album. So unique. Awesome colorful guitar play. All in all great compositions. ❤

It must have been and no doubt still is absolutely incredible to have been part of the pinnacle of creativity in music and art in the 1990s
One of many pinnacles of different genres at different times

Ever seen that Michael Douglas movie Falling Down? Always felt this would be perfect theme music for that movie.
Greatest movie ever made. "DFENS"!
Maybe one of the best songs of grunge music...
Im not sure there was ever a time where I could control myself
Once upon a time, at the end of the note...🎵💔
the perfect first song. I remember when I was a kid, my dad played this CD, I find the name of the band funny, not expecting much, after being introduced to Nirvana. And then, fell in love imediately
Top tier musicians!
A message to the future generations: "DON'T LET THIS SONG DIE" 💞👌😊👍

Whaaaaaaaaaaahooooo
Mike McCreedy deserves so much more credit!
His guitar tone is so nasty here, love it.
Memorables años 90s. Sonido oscuro y enigmático. Maestros alto sonido.

Got in a car crash while this was playing. First real car crash, totalled my first and only car. I'm gonna be broke by the end of this. Just hope this album didn't explode in my CD player

Song just hits my soul hard
The debut of a legend

uuhhYEAH~ 🤤
So this is the 30th anniversary digital remix/remaster but doesn't RUclips compress digital audio a lot? It does sound great through my studio monitors but I'd be keen to know the sample rate and depth.
I was wondering the same thing.
Congrats
Love dave krusen's playing on this album.
We all have our favorites
Pearl jam was the expansion of mother Love Bone
