It's a double-strike at the heart because hearts and thoughts have faded now compared to when I first heard it. I used to belt this out on my guitar to impress friends - now some of those friends are gone, and others are "gone" but in a different way. Jesus this song is so sad but so true and so damn pretty.

Know I'm taking this song out of context, but I just lost my mom to dementia and always felt such a personal connection to these lyrics and her situation. She wrote poetry, which I'd been unable to read without bursting into tears since the disease stole her from me. As she lay in the hospital bed this week, unresponsive and on a myriad of drugs to ease the pain of her journey, all I could do was stay at her side, hold her hand, play her favorite music and read her beautifully written poems and stories to her again. It was a gift for me in many ways. It brought back, if only through prose, my magnificent mom and her gift for writing. The lyrics "memories like fingerprints are slowly raising" were true. So thank you, Pearl Jam, for allowing me to apply my own deeply personal meaning to your haunting song as I navigate this intense grief.

No, it was just our era for music.
Music peaked in the late 1960s in terms of melody and harmony (computers analyzed it).
We knew at the time in the 1980s and 1990s that music was going downhill but we still had some great songs.
Around 2015 it was like there was no more good music. Now I find myself seeing 80s songs getting burnt out.

It's so funny that you say that -- I'm on the wrong side of 55, but after losing so many years to major depression, I feel as if I'm picking up where I left off in 95. I'll be looking for part time work in the next couple of weeks to get me out among people again, it's guaranteed that at the worst, it'll be a coffee shop. Toronto's impossible to afford, so I live in a small town where there are no book stores I could slink my way into. What scares me a little bit is the foreknowledge that coffee shops are no light work, and I ruined my back hauling boxes of cds & records during my 20s (showing off like the dumbass I often was).
I'm looking forward to being out & about among people again, esp younger ones who usually seem so gorgeously full of life. I wish I'd known that about myself when I was young & incredibly, painfully insecure, but so it goes.

    *LYRICS:*
I seem to recognize your face
    Haunting, familiar yet
I can't seem to place it
Cannot find the candle of thought to light your name
Lifetimes are catching up with me
    All these changes taking place
I wish I'd seen the place
But no one's ever taken me
Hearts and thoughts they fade, fade away
Hearts and thoughts they fade, fade away
I swear, I recognize your breath
Memories like fingerprints are slowly raising
Me, you wouldn't recall for I'm not my former
It's hard when you're stuck upon the shelf
I changed by not changing at all
    Small town predicts my fate
Perhaps that's what no one wants to see
I just want to scream hello
My God it's been so long
    Never dreamed you'd return
But now here you are and here I am
Hearts and thoughts they fade away
Hearts and thoughts they fade, fade away
Hearts and thoughts they fade, fade away
Hearts and thoughts they fade away
Hearts and thoughts they fade, fade away

"You wouldn't recall, I'm not my former....," This makes me think of my grandmother, the only grandparent I ever knew. I was a horrible person when I was younger and she died before she could see me change. My brother was around to see the start of it when he passed at 52 from a heart attack and my father the near completion of it. I now only have my mom and sister at 80 and 60 respectively speaking. God willing, they'll have been around long enough to see me go from....doing what I'd done to having a PhD. I don't think my grandmother would recognize me if only for my face given the chance, but I like to believe she would all the same.

@@mrcrandberry6115 What isn’t ominous and haunting about the living long enough to see that you don’t matter to anyone anymore, even within the context of a small town, your friends, and family? What isn’t ominous and haunting about being dead to the world even when your world is small?

    • @mrcrandberry6115
      @mrcrandberry6115 Год назад +1

@@AP-op4rc I think "evocative" or "poignant" would be better words for this then "ominous" and "haunting." Mainly because "ominous" intends to a feeling of foreboding or calamity, and this song is really just about remembering.

    • @AP-op4rc
      @AP-op4rc Год назад

@@mrcrandberry6115 I guess it comes down to how we interpret some of the meaning behind it. I agree, evocative and poignant are great descriptors. I guess I just see a lot of darkness in the way that things are remembered in this song. To me it’s not in a nostalgic way, but more in a way that emphasizes a sense of loss and emptiness.
