    I appreciate your intro when you were talking about not feeling pressured to remodel everything. I think that's very thoughtful of you because it can be tempting. Good luck with your kitchen!

    The knowledge that Paige has about historical architecture & lifestyle is phenomenal! You certainly made a wise choice to work with her. She's about the best point person for this type of reno besides being an excellent teacher, I could listen to her all day.! You can tell she's an engineer by the level of detail she goes into but surprisingly she communicates it in such a way that its easily understandable. That's s GIFT. well done!

    My parents bought their house nearly 40 years ago with a very old (back then and now) gas oven with stove top that Mum still uses everyday. It is smaller than yours and possibly older but so beautiful. It really gives the kitchen character and has never let Mum down. The style of house is what we call in australia 'a queenslander' and I love it that the kitchen has not lost its old world charm. I even met my husband while standing beside this stove as he walked up our back steps.

    Super excited about your restoration! Also excited about the walk-in pantry!! My sister had a stove like that and absolutely loved it. Lisa, may I make a suggestion? Instead of cabinets between the sink and refrigerator, how about drawers? Maybe 2 deep drawers for like pots and pans. They’re just so much easier rather than having to take out what’s in front in order to reach to the back to get items out. Just a thought 😘.

    • @amyhenke4862
      @amyhenke4862 5 лет назад +3

      I agree about the deep drawers vs cabinets. In our current house, we have deep drawers instead of cabinets. When we first moved in I hated that aspect of my kitchen. However, I quickly came to see this was much more practical. we are building a house right now and that's what I went for in my new kitchen. Our cabinet guy even suggested it before I could tell him that's what I wanted. I also opted for taking out the upper cabinets around the sink. That's what I currently have, and I can't imagine going back to feeling closed in while doing dishes.

      Another vote for drawers. Almost our entire kitchen is drawers and it is amazing

    • @keylalipo7778
      @keylalipo7778 5 лет назад +2

      I would do ALL drawers if I were to redo my kitchen. Especially in my forever house 😉

    • @tammy4him42
      @tammy4him42 5 лет назад +3

      I agree that large drawers are great, HOWEVER, my hubby made all of my cabinets with the shelves fully extending which acts just like a drawer for all practical purposes. So, if the aesthetic is better with the cabinet to be made with doors, there is a option to avoid the pain in the “rear” to reach the rear of the cabinet. 😉

    • @keylalipo7778
      @keylalipo7778 5 лет назад

      Tammy 4him That’s another good option too😊. I like the deep drawers a bit more for the plain fact that you can stack things higher due to their depth 😉

    That exact stove sits in my husband's grandparent's house. We lived in the house for a couple of years and I cooked on the stove every day. The drawers at the bottom are warmer drawers. You can store cast iron in them, but they were meant to be used for keeping prepared food warm. They were great for rising bread dough in the winter months.

      Warming drawers are wonderful when you are having a holiday meal. I use my warming drawer to proof homemade bread and rolls. Maybe use one for the cast iron and the other dedicated for warming; when entertaining use both warming drawers.

    So refreshing that you are thinking "timeless" instead of "trendy"....ya know, go to Hobby Lobby and get a sign that says 'Farmhouse' for the mostly white and burlap decor....just incase people didn't know :) A true farmhouse is more of a feeling kind of thing. Like walking into your Grandma's house...you know there will be good eats :) Best of luck. Your kitchen will be awesome.

    Great video! Could you move the old cabinets into your pantry for more storage? Definitely light and bright. You can always accent colors with accessories without painted cupboards that are a color you may get tired of. Can't wait to watch your progress.

      My thought exactly Suzie!!! I would reuse as many of the things being removed from the kitchen as I could, and maybe even use some of the cabinets in the bathroom and elsewhere in the house, and sell what you don't use, they are really nice cabinets and counters. Can't wait to see it get started.

    love pantries, it makes it easier to go without so many cabinets I agree with you about the deeper window sill. I believe that although you want the look of 1890 you also want the things that make you happy... I bet a lot of women back then would have loved a bigger sill. Just a lot had to "make" do.

    This is going to be SO cool! I love that you are not having upper cabinets and keeping this as authentic as possible. Also I do like that the trim is white because often times people would use cheeper wood back then and they would most definitely paint it. Your home is really coming along very nicely already and you've hardly been in it at all!

    It would be super cool to transform one of the cottages into a kitchen studio for your business. Tax write off! Looking forward to the home restoration/remodel.

    • @TheScarlett
      @TheScarlett 5 лет назад

      If I understand the new tax law (and I'm not a CPA), the cottage would need to be the principal place in which she conducts business. I believe she could deduct $5 per square foot for a maximum of 300 square feet or the actual cost of operating that space; in other words, she still would likely want to renovate her kitchen for the pleasure of it and the additional kitchen might not pay for itself. Now, if she was a caterer or had a home baking business that required a separate spot to adhere to health codes it might be worth it.

    Hi Lisa, This is an exciting project! I love that you are being respectful of the period of your new home.
    As a mom to 8, with the oldest graduating this year, I’d like to encourage you to think through how your kitchen usage might change in the next few years as your kids get older. The amount of food we eat through is substantial, and it is a whole lot more than even just a few years ago. (We go through 50 lbs of flour and 50 lbs of oats in about a month.) Our 4’ x 5’ pantry, which I’m thankful for, cannot hold all of our foodstuffs. Our eating style is verrry similar to your family’s meals and snacks.
    Have you thought about where all your fresh produce will go when it comes in from the garden? In baskets under the prep table, maybe? Maybe you’re sold on marble for the table, but you might be interested in looking into a quartz look alike for easier maintenance.
    We only can things like applesauce and peaches, but even those 200 or so jars take up significant space. Many are stored on shelves under our island, which is awesome for easy retrieval and quick put-away of clean, empty jars. We used to keep them in the basement, which was a pain. Although, if you plan to do tons of canning, maybe you’d want a canning kitchen in one of your other buildings(?)
    Since our kids often help cook, a prep sink in our island is a real blessing. I also like having drawers in our island. They’re wonderful for storing all the baking supplies and big mixing bowls. They make baking an efficient job.
    We use a Berkey, too, and I wish we’d done a better job of giving it its own special spot, with a spigot. Ours ended up not fitting in our kitchen. Oops!
    Thank you for all you do and share!! I look forward to your videos each week. 🙂

    I'm so excited for you! You inspire me to organize my kitchens & redecorate. We have a home in the country that my husband's grandparents built in 1941 and a home in the city that has been in my family since 1958. It's a challenge to keep up two older homes, but I just can't sell them because they both have been in our family for so long. Keep up the good work! You have exciting ideas!!

    So SO excited for you and that incredible kitchen. I grew up using a stove like what you found, but I can’t tell you anymore than that. My mother had my father put in a gorgeous big kitchen when I was 14..... but I remember learning on an ALL GAS stove. And that sink.... yup had one of those also! If only they had saved them! But it was early 70’s and everyone was “getting all new and improved” appliances. They may have been new... but definitely NOT improved! Those old appliances never had problems like todays .
    I can not wait to watch the progress of all this... I am so excited ( like it’s me or something ). I think it’s just the whole idea of someone restoring BACK to what was once there.
    Thank you for taking the time to share all this with us.... God Bless and looking forward to updated videos.

    What a wonderful design for your kitchen. My mother-in-law had a sink like that. She passed away 25 years ago. I hated to let that sink go when we sold her home. Her stove was similar to your new/old one too. She served many delicious meals cooked on that old stove. I notice that you have a British Berkefeld water filter on your counter. I love mine. It makes our very hard and unpalatable drinkable. Can't wait to follow along with all your renovations.

    Exciting times ahead!!!! I'm loving the "vintage" stove and sink. Really, REALLY like them. I have to laugh, that's what was in my home growing up. We had a beautiful, beautiful home in Western New York. We lived in a small village on the Erie Canal and most of the homes were the same- from Victorian up to the 1960's. I'm not that old, I'll be 60 in June, and to hear our stove described that way is true and a bit frightening! Looking forward to more. Thanks for sharing!!!

    I had a computer cabinet custom built about 15 years ago. I didn’t have room for, and didn’t want the cabinet doors flopping out in the way when I was working at the computer, so I had the doors that slide back into the cabinet, out of the way. I left them that way most of the time, but when company was coming I could close them for a tidy look. I think this concept would serve you. You don’t want all those doors to deal with all the time. You could have say four doors and be able to open the whole thing when you are working, much more convenient, which is so important in your busy life. They could probably be made to look like the individual doors if you choose. But trust me all those little doors will drive you crazy. Lol

    We'll, this is exciting. I have a brother who restored an 1890 Queen Ann Victorian with an italianite addition which was at least partially built from wooden crates used to bring in supplies for the Louisiana purchase exposition (St Louis world's fair) in 1903 & 1904. I believe you are very close in proximity to them and I know you grew up very near them and one town over from where I grew up---though decades apart. :). It was a great ride helping and watching my brother's restoration and I look forward to riding along with yours. Cheers.

    We just built a kitchen so a tip would be .... I know you want your worktable/island to have casters - so probably no plugs - but I recommend you consider where you you plug in your small appliances like, mixer, ice-cream maker, coffee maker, food processor. Perhaps make space in your pantry for a counter with plugs? So exciting. I look forward to following the progress. Have fun :-) My sister also recently built her kitchen and forgot to put electricity to her island - she regrets it big time.

    Very exciting! I love your stove and sink!! Someone suggested to add deep drawers instead of cabinets and I totally agree, it’s a life changing experience. Another suggestion is to have your work table a combo of an island and table so you could have an electric outlet mounted in there, plus a couple of extra drawers for utensils and bowls. One end can be a table where your kids can sit and cook with you.You may need to plug a blender or something when you prepare food and it’s nice to have that option. You could opt for a wooden island and that way you’ll achieve a two tone kitchen look which has a better look than when it’s just one color. Just a suggestion🤣

    Working from a 1951 GE, my only suggestion is a thermometer to hang in the oven. Ours was a total workhorse! Love them so much and what they bring to the picture

    Oh my, your kitchen will be amazing!! I'm so excited to see the progress! Thank you for sharing with us!
    We're in the process of designing our kitchen in the house my husband built for us. One of my favorite details is the antique Hoosier baking cabinet. We found it on craigslist, and it brought so much authentic farmhouse charm to the space. We do have a "modern" apron front sink. I'm not an expert, but from my research I feel that the large, deep single basin is very close to what an old farmhouse could have had, and I love it! We're planning to add a beadboard backsplash, which will help sell the look, I think. Sorry to ramble, I'm just super excited about your kitchen restoration and it's inspiring me so much!💛

    for extra storage and counter space, making your counter tops 30 inches deep rather than the norm of 24 inches adds a great deal of lower storage, using drawers in all your lower cabinets makes it much easier to get to everything easily in the lower cabinets too. I did the deeper drawer bottom and 16 inch upper cabinets on one wall in my kitchen and decided if I ever do another kitchen I would do all the cabinets this way in the future. Just something to think about.

    I have open shelving and detest it. I find that a lot of dust accumulates and if you aren't on top of it frequently, it gets pretty nasty pretty fast. And in the kitchen with cooking going on, it gets dusty faster. So word to the wise, keep things on it to a minimum and dust frequently. Otherwise, its a beautiful lay out. Can't wait to see it all come together!

    White is always perfect! You can always add other colors here and there. 💕. Lovin’ the stove. Suggestion put 3x as many electrical outlets as you think you need. Including in the floor under your large, beautiful work table if possible. Our 1904 home had very deep window sills, but it was brick. I think that determined the sill depth. You can make them whatever you want!
