About 15 years ago I was out in Oceanside CA surfing. It was 6am the sun was just starting to coming up and I was sitting on my surfboard a few 100 yards off shore just taken in the view and enjoying being alone. When I heard a sloshing noise of water next to me. A little over an arm length away was a dorsal fin. I watched it move from my right to in front of my board then slowly disappear underwater.
That was the longest five minutes I spent crouched on my board waiting to paddle back to shore.

One big shark. But funny enough i was born and raised in ewa beach. This aint new. Hell they would swim right up to shore looking for a snack. We would wait an hour, when the surfers went back in, if they weren’t eaten, we knew it was safe! 😂

Looks like a Tiger shark. Attacks are rare but most times they attack because there are probably fish nearby and they can be territorial. The other times they could be starving or just opportunistic. Also, urinating in the water has been linked to many shark attacks. They are not mindless killers, they are smart. Contrary to what we have been told. It usually isn’t mistaken identity that leads to attacks. These sharks are very familiar with our smell and what we look like. I guess it’s bad for tourism if the truth gets out. That being said, very low chances you will get hit by one but every time you get in the water… it’s a game of chance.

You’re definitely right about them not mistaking people for seals. That was propaganda aimed at making people think sharks were happy chaos who mean no harm.

Alright, let me be brutality honest here. Stay the hell out of the water in that way. A boat is one thing, a meager surfboard is another. Man's arrogance is what gets them killed.
