    I think the big difference is that Kickstarter games need a strong advertising campaign prelaunch in order to be successful but larger publishers can drop a title with minimal advance advertising. For example, I don't think Stonemaier has announced/named their 1-2 titles that they will release this year but they will certainly get a lot of hype upon launch.
    Great video. Keep it up.

    Long live Daniele Tascini!!! Love him because a) he's Italian like me, and b) he produces wonderful games (Tzolk'in, the Marco Polo series, Trismegistus, etc etc). As a predominantly solo gamer, I am very excited that Tabannusi is solo compatible. By the way, he's very smart to always partner up with somebody when releasing a game (my favorite partnerships are Daniele Tascini/David Turczi and Daniele Tascini/Simone Luciani). If Tascini released a game by himself, I think he would have trouble publishing it. But as long as he partners up with people, his game will forever be available..thank GOD! Anybody who doesn't publish his games is a d*mn fool.

    It's hard to make a non-Kickstarter 2021 list right now because a large number of 2021 non-Kickstarter games haven't been announced yet. My most anticipated games in alphabetic order include 2491 Planetship from MEBO Games (assuming it gets U.S. distribution in 2021), Beyond The Edge from Wizkids, Empires of the North: Wrath of the Lighthouse from Portal Games, Now or Never from Red Raven Games, and The Initiative from Unexpected Games. I could only come up with 5. CloudAge is listed as a 2020 game, but I didn't hear about it until this month and I don't know when it first became available in retail. The more I hear about it the more I'm becoming interested in it.

    This early in the year most of the retail games that will be released this year aren't listed on BGG yet.
    KS on the other hand inherently forces the creators to release information about their game a long time before the release.

    Mainline retail markets will suffer tremendously because of the enormous success of crowdfunding. But they will eventually find ways of catching up. They will find savings and reduced costs in minimum order quantities or reusing materials and avoiding unique materials, recycling, etc. They can’t match the boutique, hobbyist market and pricing. But there’s no reason they couldn’t eventually produce a Scythe or a Brass or Creature Comforts type of game.

    Somehow I stumbled on ThinkerThemer when researching Dune game last month. Amy and Maggie only had about 1 K subs, Now closing in on 2.7 subs. They are good and funny. Great smiles by both and I enjoy how they dissect games by mechanics and immersion. Amy is the name you drew a blank on. Keep up the great work Alex, 20 K is within reach. Praise God

    Tabannusi is certainly on my list, and if it ends up being the last T game, then so be it. Hadrian's Wall looks great and I ended up snagging it on the pre-order. For me, the one game you need to consider is the Ultimate Railroads, which is all of the Russian Railroads content coming back into print! Mutant Insurrection seems like a re-theme of Elder Signs. Not sure how they differ, but they look very similar

    nice list. Hadrians Wall, a flip and write (with meeples) seems to be something similar to That's pretty clever. It's combo heaven. I don't think you can compare it to Rome and Roll. It's a euro disguised in a Roll and Write. I think it works well. Easy to set-up and give you the feel of euro.
    Looking forward to imperium legends/classics as well.

    Between Coffee Traders and Seize the Bean, 2021 should be a banner year for coffee themed games. The game play on Coffee Traders looks amazing and seems to have a tight economy combined with high levels of player interaction (both things I want from a heavy euro), but the minimum 3 player count will keep it out of my collection. I really do appreciate the designers not bolting on a weak solo or 2p variant and being up front about the player count, and will certainly look to play a friend's copy (hopefully).

    I'm increasingly happy to see videos about upcoming games that aren't coming via kickstarter, which I'm disliking more and more. Between the interminable wait between a campaign's introduction and its final delivery, the contrived stretch goal structure of pretending that features that were almost certainly always going to be included regardless of a campaign's total funding, to the (to me) gross manipulation of backers to conduct free marketing on social media in exchange for, again, features likely baked into the final product from the start... and then the frequent drama accompanying larger campaigns fueled by now-producers who suddenly know what's best for a game they had no hand in designing. I'm backing fewer and fewer kickstarters for these reasons among others (especially bloated boxes of plastic-laden games with too many minis [sorry Alex 😉]) and fewer and fewer of them are the games that, over time, make it to my table most often.
    I'm all for the Hadrian's Walls! Bring on the Coffee Traders! Three cheers for Taban-- well, maybe not that one. Hooray for Cubitos!

      It's difficult. If retail games would be also marketed one year in advance, any hype will have died done, when it's available. In contrast to KS where a year later all backer receive their game, post about it and (if the game is good) rekindle the hype for the retail release.
      I think Stonemaier Games does a good job with marketing their games, with anouncements, a designer diary and advance orders. Don't know when they enter their game in BBG though.

Crowd funded games are the way publishers use to gouge people with high prices by adding a ton of (mostly) useless plastic. Of course there will be good games that end up in CF platforms but they will usually cost twice (at least) what they should otherwise. I won't even mention how many of the crowd funded games are flawed due to the simple nature that people making them are not professionals, they are just regular people learning as they go.

    I think its important to note that the Tascini drama is about his public comments about race and his publisher dropping him over it. It is both easy to look up and pretty big news. It doesn't take any longer to say that than it does to say "I don't want to get into it". Since so many of his games involve cultures involving people of color-- including the one discussed here- it isn't any more of a side track than say the first three minutes of this video, just for example.
    I'm just noticing that almost every white game reviewer has either brushed this off or totally ignored it despite hours and hours of chatter and side tracks that arnt even boardgame related and I just find it odd how much effort it must take to ignore it. So I decided to bring it up just briefly whenever I see a reviewer clearly make an effort to ignore it.

    • @BoardGameCo
      @BoardGameCo  3 года назад +6

      Oh I'm not getting into it with great intent. Not because of the effort. The problem is that I've seen pretty mixed things, not to the idea that what he did was wrong, but rather how wrong. Meaning outright racism vs a lack of sensitivity. I in no way approve of his actions, but I do not believe in sharing negative information about people that lack context or a full picture, and I believe most of those things are very lacking here.
      I'll happily have a conversation about Racism on the channel. But I will not use my platform to tear someone down unless I can say with great confidence that every aspect of what I'm saying is a full picture. If the goal here is to hold people accountable for their words and the damage they can do, I believe heavily in starting with myself.

      Your North American cultural imperialism is no better than whatever you are criticizing. Look up how many Italian restaurants in the US are called "Negri's". If it meant what you think it means, those restaurants would not have that name. Amerocentric leftists who think that anything with the prefix "Neg" is connected to the American "N" word have ruined this poor man's career. It is an Italian word that means a person of African descent. It has been used for hundreds of years, and isn't derogatory or pejorative. Young Italians who have absorbed too much progressive American culture have decided that in their opinion it is an analogue to the "N" word. Which it isn't.
      By the way, if you look at the context, his "comments about race" were him criticizing actual racists who were saying that Orcs in fantasy represent Black people. Only a racist would make that connection. No normal person sees a fantasy Orc and thinks about Black people. And like you said, Tascini makes games that showcase the cultures of people of color all around the world. The idea that he's some kind of racist who loves Mesoamerica and Ancient Egypt is a pretty strange take.
      But hopefully you feel morally righteous accusing someone of something they didn't do by taking words out of context and then putting them through Google translate.

    • @ericmatthews9673
      @ericmatthews9673 3 года назад

      @@shanerion
      Tascini isn't a restaurant in the US. He is an Italian where most modern people would not use that word to describe another human. I live with a native Italian. Nether he nor any of his family who live there would call someone the word he used, because, at BEST, it's comparable to calling someone a "negro" or "colored" in the US. though most young Italians who speak English would translate it as exactly the word people are trying to pretend it isn't. It absolutely is a slur.
      Tascini knows this. Rather than apologize for his insensitivity he blamed goggle translation like a coward and of course this was while he pulled out the whole 'I have black friends BS'. He knows better. And THAT is the problem.
      Unlike you I am not going to rely on ignorance and BS whataboutism to give him a pass.
      You also clearly misread what he said about orcs in the article too-- find an Italian to explain it to you, because you do not have it right.
      If you think its OK to call people of color "Negros" or 'colored' then just say so instead of trying to use a poor excuse for whataboutsim to try to guilt someone into silence.

      Hope you're feeling morally righteous. You should probably google the fact that there are a bunch of Italian restaurants in the US called "Negri's". If it meant what the idiots on /r boardgames thought it meant, they wouldn't be called that. Tascini was canceled because our culture is in a "satanic panic" style moral panic. But this time, instead of pearl clutching religious conservatives or McCarthyists blacklisting people, it's the "progressives". But to be honest, I'll jump on the cancel culture as well, and will never buy another Board and Dice product again that isn't made by Tascini.
