Well, from what I know, the fact they didn't take Istanbul as Türkiye's/Turkey's capital is because of their history when Constantinople the capital was of the back then, Ottoman Empire etc. Strategically, the place today would be more vulnerable to be the capital as countries are now closer by and attacking a capital can 'deal' significantly more damage to the country. Although, yes, it is still an important place for the global economy, more specifically the trade between countries.

Correction: Viking were first European to reach America. Human reached America long ago during ice age when there was land bridge between east most point of Russia and Alaska. In more recent times, Polynesian also reached America in their tiny boats (American west cost).
