Performance testing - 3.8L X51 swap into my 981 GTS by Ehresmann Automotive/MTO Engineering

  • Running on stock 20" with 265 rears - quite a bit slower than the car would be on the 19 or 18 inch wheels but to compensate the weather was really good for making power here (negative DA).
    Stock PSE exhaust. Fabspeed GT4 race headers. Some weight reduction (maybe 50kg /100lbs) but with a big wing on the back which causes plenty of drag at high speeds.

    Do you get any wheels spin on take-off? My best time is 4.1 0-60 and 12.2 1/4 mile.
    That’s because Of wheel spin on launch control though. I have the same set up as you. 3.8l with 430-440hp and can’t get my tires to stay planted. Please advise how you’re keep traction on launch control.

    • @JCviggen1
      @JCviggen1  3 года назад

      Wheel spin was often an issue, especially as it was pretty cold and low grip out. What tires are you using? I am on Cup 2 here. If it was a bit warmer and the tires were hot I could have had even less wheelspin than this

      @@bca51192 Well you need to find a place with grippy tarmac, make sure the tires are nice and warm and hope for the best lol. I had plenty of runs killed by wheel spin. And Cup 2 are slightly better than your options...

      Before my car had 371ps (365hp) from the 3.4 and was about 2 sec slower from 100 to 200 km/h. 0 to 100 km/h has gone down by about half a second. There's a video on my channel somewhere of a 0 to 200 LC I think

    My 981 GTS still has the Approved Guarantee, but I might be tempted in 10 years or so when I cannot continue with it 😬
    Will Ehresmann actually buy your used engine? So like you give them your car for some weeks and then just come by to pick it up when it's done and that's it?

    • @JCviggen1
      @JCviggen1  3 года назад

      He probably won't buy it himself but he has lots of contacts in the racing world so it's often possible for him to find a party willing to take over the old engine. Similarly, he will look around what used 3.8 engines are for sale and advise which to get. It gets shipped straight to him and then the process takes a week or 2. Well worth it! But I'd like more power now lol

    • @JuJu_Vega
      @JuJu_Vega 3 года назад

      @@JCviggen1 hehe more is always better... So you mentioned the cost of somewhere around 18k. That is with a used 3.8l engine then? Or is it rebuilt?

    • @JCviggen1
      @JCviggen1  3 года назад

      @@JuJu_Vega Yeah the engine was 11K used. Spent around 10K on the conversion and tuning. Got 5K for the old 3.4. It's actually a very cost effective mod in terms of power per $/€. If you want any more the price skyrockets. You can get 500+ HP but it's 30K on top of the existing 3.8. So going from 360 to 450 hp for only 16K net is pretty good.

      @@JCviggen1 yeah definitely sounds legit to me!! Just thought they would fit a new/rebuilt engine. Your acceleration is just so impressive. My GTS is a manual, would be so awesome to have big power with the slightly taller gearing...

      The MAHA dyno showed 444 PS corrected. Not really comparable to US dyno numbers but it's clearly quite a lot as my car matches a 992S from a roll if there are enough revs lol

    Did you tune the pdk to shift faster? Yours almost Shifts like a gt3

    • @JCviggen1
      @JCviggen1  4 года назад

      Untouched PDK software actually... I think it's a bit slow lol... but probably not worth messing with too much. In sport mode the shifts seem quicker because it's not doing the torque boost thing so I prefer using that. Here I was in sport+ which keeps the throttle open during shifts but thus sounds a bit more like a regular automatic.

      Oh okay, I see videos of other caymans and their launch isn’t as quick or stay up in the rpm range like yours. I have a cayman R that I’m doing a 991 3.8l swap on. I hope I can get close to your numbers, if not better since I will have a race exhaust and Dundon intake runners added. Hoping to get close to 400whp. Cobb is the way to go right? Thinking of maybe doing the pdk Tune as well.

    • @JCviggen1
