- In this video, I’ll show you how I built a Murphy Bed using Create a Bed hardware. This Murphy bed was built as part of a project to convert a guest bedroom into a home office. We will cover all the steps along the way as we use Create a Bed hardware to bring this project to life. This build is straightforward and is easily a DIY project if you have a few tools at your disposal. I hope you enjoy the video and as always, Thanks for watching!

Beautifully Done. When you clip that algorithm your channel will really take off! Nice to see that hardware from Lou-A-vul, Ky….
Thank you so much!
And thanks for watching.
Thank you so much for this video! I'm hoping to undertake this process this summer and was feeling a bit overwhelmed by the information online but your video is really clear and makes it seem achievable even for me :)
Also really like how there's not a lot of chit chat to skip through to get to useful content
My goal when I decided to start this channel was to help me others learn cabinet building and woodworking. It really means a lot to me to get a message like this. Thank you very much for your kind words and best of luck with your project.
Regards
Wes
nice job. looks great
Glad you like it.
Thanks for watching!
That was impressive!
Thank you!
Very good to watch, thank you
Glad you enjoyed it.

Question for you.
I am getting ready to build one myself. The plans use mostly 3/4" (0.75") plywood.
Quality sanded plywood is sold in 23/32" (0.71875")
Yes, this is a tiny difference.
Did you need to adjust anything for that difference?
I do typically make minor adjustments to my cut ticket to compensate for the differences in material thickness.
Great job! I particularly like your headboard. 😁
Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed the video and thanks for watching.
Any details you can share on the dimensions of the headboard and face frame?
@@Mattbixton I added an extra 3/4 worth of depth to the side panels in order to add the face frame onto the headboard. The headboard panel is 24” tall but the face frame is the same height as Create a Bed has specked in their drawings. The top height of the headboard is as specified as well due to the clearance needed to mount the pistons during installation.
The side panels are 1 1/2” thick on my project. This was more about cosmetic appearance than structural integrity. I wanted the thickness to be similar to the frames on the cabinets on either side of the bed.
Hope this helps
Wes
@@thesoutherncraftwoodshop4134 Thanks for the video. Can you explain the face frame a little more? I like your headboard, but I'm not following...
What material and cuts for the face frame? Looks like some 1x2's and maybe a 1x6?
Also, what is the "height as Create a bed specked"? 15"? and then the top would be at 39" since the headboard panel is 24"?
Thanks again
@@SGD24 I think I might have misunderstood the original question. My headboard is 24” tall but the top of my headboard stops at the same point as it would if I had used Create a Bed’s layout. I added a framework of 3/4” x 2” boards to a plywood panel to create the design. This portion of the headboard is the same height at the headboard panel would have been had I only used Create a Bed’s cut sheet. The rest of the 24” extends down to the floor. In order to accommodate the extra 3/4” depth at the headboard, I added another 3/4” to the side panels.
I hope this makes a little more sense.
Great video! Looks like the header is just 1/2” taller than the instructions…any specific reason for this alteration beyond aesthetics?
Also, did you consider using longer hardware on the side plates since you doubled up the plywood?
Yes, the header was adjusted for aesthetic reasons only. I also changed the fasteners for the side panels due to the double thickness.
Thanks for the compliment and thanks for watching!
Hi, any chance you can share the assembly instructions ?
Create a Bed has them on their website for all the different mattress sizes as well as both vertical and horizontal layouts.
If I have an 8 inch mattress will this accommodate it ? If not, how can I customize it to accommodate it ?
Yes, an 8” thick mattress will work perfectly fine. The mattress in this video was approximately 10-11” thick if I remember correctly.
Great job! Did you build what looks to be a desk in front of the bed? Any drawing available?
Thank you!
Yes, did build a desk in that room as well.
Create a Bed provides a detailed set of drawings and a cut list. I made some slight changes in my design but stayed true to all of their critical dimensions. In doing so I did work up a rough set of drawings to work off of but I didn’t publish them like I do a lot of my other projects.
If you’re interested in seeing them, email me at info@southerncraftwood.com and I’ll send you what I have. Keep in mind that they were a working set for my use and not intended to take the place of Create a Bed’s design.
I looking for more details on the desk. I’m in process of building the bed from the kit. Do you have drawings or photos of the desk?
@@tbradfish shoot me an email at info@southerncraftwood.com and I’ll send you something
Can you use the Create a Bed hardware kit for any size mattress? I need to build a cabinet for a custom 36''w mattress. Most Murphy bed mechanisms come set for standard sizes, looks like this hardware provides flexibility. Thanks.
If I were to approach this project, I believe I would go with the kit designed around a twin mattress. If I remember correctly, a twin mattress measures 38 X 75. I would adjust the mattress frame down to fit the 36” mattress and take in to account the cabinet width will need to be decreased by the same amount. If you need to adjust for the length of the mattress, use the same approach but be sure to make your adjustment on the top side (the foot end of the bed). Follow the manufacturers instructions as to where the pivot hardware should go. “Do not deviate from this”
Lastly, the pistons for each kit are designed around a specific weight range. If your custom mattress is too light, you may need to add some additional weight. You can do this on the foot end inside the frame and under the 1/4” plywood.
I hope this helps and thanks for turning in to the video!

@@thesoutherncraftwoodshop4134 thanks for taking the time to respond!!
My guess is there is no overlap for bedframe.
Correct. There was not supposed to be overlap at the foot rail end.
@@thesoutherncraftwoodshop4134 great work BTW
