Sad thing is a person who is elderly or on disability receive so little its not even enough for rent and the basics they have to depend on family if they dont have someone to lean on they end up homeless
SS is usually below federal poverty levels. That's how much the govt thinks of the elderly & disabled. Even with help in rent, electric, food, it's still scraping by with what is left. Most live on $800 or less a month. It would be nice to get $200 a month raise but the govt always takes raises away by raising Medicare, the food stamps get reduced & rent gets raised if you get help from govt with rent. So technically, a raise is usually a couple of dollars. Literally.
They have low income housing for seniors and people on disability there is also food stamps food banks you need to learn where your resources are call your town office and ask about programs Google 211.org
@@williamdemaray8103 Yes they have low income housing & section 8, but I assure you there isn't enough to help as many as need them. Food stamps often are not an amount that would help for even 2-3 wks. The real blessing is they can get help paying their medicare premiums which just means less help in a different area such as food stamps. $100 FS don't go far. Most live below federal poverty levels. Food banks can help but a person can eat only so many beans & rice. I personally have a years worth & those who need special diet requirements are left out. I'm lucky I live in an area that actually takes care of their low income seniors but it can be real hard on those not as lucky.

@@rickovery yup, and housing help? Section 8/HUD in Louisville Ky has an approximate 8 year waiting list if you don't have underage children, 2 years with.
That is what I was told when I called them a couple of years ago. I am still ~7.25 years down the list with zero income and a wife on SSI living in a house that should be condemned and torn down. With what little heat we can afford we average mid to upper 50's temperatures throughout the winter indoors in this drafty old house. We sure cant afford repairs. The whole house need jacked up, a new foundation, and has no insulation at all. There are gaps big enough for critters to come and go as they please. Our only toilet is in an outhouse because the house sank, shearing off the septic line. Our bathtub is a horse water trough with pex pipe plumbed on the surface of the wall to get water into it and drains under the crawlspace.
Except for having electric and an actual roof over our heads, we aren't a whole lot better off than some homeless (as they are warmer in shelters than we are at home). Our appraised value of our home and property is less than 38k, 9 years ago, and the condition has gotten worse. So selling it to move would not help. The sudden influx of money would take away our income and food stamps. And we would have to file taxes on it too.
People on disability need more money.

Finding a 'good job' is damn near impossible in the USA. You basically have to straight make your own business. Outside of that? Good luck. I had the best job Ive ever had then covid inflation hit (not covid, the INFLATION from printing $$$$ which was why the ch1navirus was released on purpose.. as a reason to print money) I lost my job. -20% value of the dollar in 18 months is insane.
Everybody says find something to do, but if you're in the pain that I most of the time am in, you can't do anything.

#Elvis Presley. Lol. Love your screen name😅 I hear ya. When I go to the doctor it wears me out. I've lost all my friends because I can't meet up with them or they'll look at me like I'm lazy. The few times I've been out lately, well last time I had to get four massages in two days just to be able to go out & be normal. By the end of the night I I was in blinding pain again. Awful.
@@SH-je4qg I am on disability as well. I just try to do the best I can to occupy my time productively, which may not be up to the standards of "regular" people. I look at my health and well bieng as my full time job at this point. If your friends can't or won't understand that you need to move at your own pace, you may need to cut them off and connect with people who understand your situation

I been dealing with depression and anxiety for years along with panic attacks and seizures my driving limited and I use to be very sociable but now I just stay home and cry most of the day.
I had filed for an appeal but we all know how long it takes and the ground for my appeal do to fact their own expert voc.rehab counselor stated I was unable to down 40hr a week or what company is going allow me to take time off without me losing my job.

I've been on a military disability for 5 years. I actually quit drinking, started hiking daily, joined art classes, etc. My medical is covered by VA, and I use it. Retirement was a blessing.

I've been calling church outreach programs and community centers. Keeping as much on physical activity as possible is important. Sometimes just brush your teeth in order to be doing something, plus this is keeping up your personal care
But it's difficult planning my next move, my depression is treatment resistant. I don't even want to be alive, let alone think of my next move. And WE'RE POOR! SSI SSDI most of us are poor, and the poor never win in this life.

Agree so hard . I do my little errands and pay my bills. By the time I'm on the second week I have about 100 dollars to my name and I try to make it stretch ,but something always comes up again
Try caffeine, which can be found in coffee, tea, and chocolate. Yes caffeine is in some soft drinks, but the first 3 have other benefits besides being a pick-up or mood upper.
Another over the counter supplement from Dollar stores is 5- htp.
It makes Serotonin in your body and any leftover is converted into Melatonin , which makes you fall asleep. Just Google it. These are natural ways to beat depression for pocket change.
i get anxiety/panic attacks 24/7 , its manageable to a tiny amount with very heavy medicines. benzos. but those are not good long term. aka cannot reliably work if i cannot reliably get to /driveto/stay/driveback at work if i a m in constant panic attacks. - but im cognitively very good, too good probably which is why i have the panic . - i was thinking about how to get into stock trading just so im not a drain on the system.
I love the first one. I went abruptly on SSDI 5 years ago at the young age of 30. With a decent SSDI monthly check and a small monthly passive income it almost seemed like paradise! I sat around, drank a six-pack of beer every night and lounged in front the the tely . Within a matter of months I was going crazy. Once on disability, it is so important to keep socializing and finding something to do. The longer you wait, the longer it is to pull your head out of the muck. Like you mentioned....volunteering is big. That is what I do in order to not feel like an unproductive member of society and it is great for socializing.
Glad to hear this, I got disabled at 39, so I know your pain, I don’t do volunteer work cause I think ss is going to monitor that to. Is it true?

@@Pitchithard I'm disabled by the blue book definition. I earned my disability. I worked since I was 16, went to college and worked full time, then worked full time as an engineer for 7 years. I started falling constantly, went deaf, lost sight in one eye and suffer from acute pain and vertigo. You aren't paying for my disability. I earned it (it is called SSDI, we all pay into it as a form of insurance in case we can't work at some point in our life). Go F yourself.

The DISGUSTING thing about our system is.... we expect people to get off their lazy butt and disability and get a job, but the muffin system is DESIGNED such way the MOMENT you get a job they penalize you and you lose your benefits. The irony is that job probably will only cover 25% of your monthly expenditure. And people have the nerve and galls to blame us.
SS has programs that will assist in getting off disability. You can have trial periods without losing benefits.

As you and those of us on ssdi very well know that if you have decided to attempt to earn extra income it is imperative that you find out what type of positions and amounts of income you are allotted to participate in earn. Social Security is like a dog with a bone; similar to the IRS they will hound you if you defy their rules. Been there, done that and didn't even actually work.😥

I started down a long road,just like what you say. I'm good now,got 3 or 4 hobbies. Stay really busy. I had some medical bills as well,I signed up for financial help they covered all I owed. Got lucky.

Survival is strongly dependent upon your state of mind. I agree wholeheartedly with your statement. You must stay active and pursue things that Challenge your intellect or risk a terrible mediocre existence. I have always been science oriented and so little by little I began building a solar power system piece by piece. I know more about energy production than most as a result and have a very small electric bill. It also meant that I can help others with similar projects. It was like watching a silicone plant growing and tending a very special garden. A panel here, a controller there, and soon, I'd accomplished something worth while. Anybody can do it given enough time and a little bit each month put to the effort. Then you look back at it and it makes you proud to see what you did. It's not the only thing you can spend your time pursuing. It just all requires massive patience and a willingness to accept delayed gratification and the rewards it provides.
Your mind is your most powerful asset. Keep it running keep it strong

That's good! Glad you got through it. Anytime you have problems with ss lying to you, you can ask your senator or congressman office for help. Then s s people have to report their work done to fix things, to the congressman or senator office in writing or email. Then you have documented proof which can be used in the appeal which many times needs done over and over til they get it corrected.
I have been fighting for 10 yrs on a overpayment lie with proof, that they havent yet fixed.
They lie about overpayment every year cz LAW is they can only collect overpayment Two year old but that's WHY THEY always lie every year claiming we owe OVERPAID so they only have to give recipients a portion of their allotted benefits. They only give me 400.00 also and they're only supposed to take ten percent if you owe overpayment. Corrupt CROOKS

Although I do agree about doing something or even working while on SSD, when your review comes around if you can be a greeter at Walmart, they will try and kick you off of it. It's just best to let them think you are a vegetable (but don't actually be one). My meds alone cost THOUSANDS of dollars every month. I could never afford to lose my benefits.
Agree. I look at my health as my full time job now. I keep my bills to a minimum now, so I won't need to work. It can be very easy to fall into bad habits if you let yourself be idle for too long.
You’re right. SSD lies about holding down a small, part-time job. Back in ‘04, I tried working for my now ex-husband as his secretary. Before MS, I was an RN. My goal was to test the waters to see if maybe I could return to my career. Unfortunately, didn’t last a month and a half…he actually fired me via Certified Letter…asshole!😂 Just that little time working was enough for SSD to justify re-evaluating me. Thank goodness I didn’t lose my disability! I depend on Medicare and part D for my complex medical care.
@@denisek292 Pretty much! If you work - at all - it will red flag your case and you'll get a re-evaluation. They DO NOT WANT TO PAY. Don't give them a reason for denying you.

@@Gothiqueluv SSD doesn’t even do full evaluations on me anymore. I have secondary-progressive MS. I’m very blessed I can walk…clumsy, but mobile. Like you, my meds cost thousands of dollars a month, so there’s no way I’m risking my luck! It’s not the life we chose, but it’s a life we can still enjoy and find fulfillment in! @@Gothiqueluv I disagree with you. There is a high percentage of people on SSDI who work small part time work and do not lose anything. Where I agree with you is if you snag a high paying job or are working many hours they will shut you right off.

Pain management therapy is painting.. bit I quit because it was too painful without all the drugs they gave along with the pain management art therapy suggestion. And the pain drugs were too much stress on my health to deal with.
After nearly 20 years of consuming copious amounts of alcohol and taking benzos for a heightened hypnotic effect, I gave my heart to Jesus Christ and stopped both. I didn't realize how much damage I had done to my brain until I stopped indulging in both and tried studying important things. My short-term memory is horrible. I find learning very difficult now. I had really good memory retention, and now it seems like my brain is bruised or something. Alcohol is like Judas in the end, and if Judas had a sister, then it would be benzos. Weed is definitely a relative. When I would smoke bud on top of everything else, I couldn't remember what happened when I woke up the next day. I laughed it off, but now that I have to actually use my brain, I'm having trouble doing so effectively. Quit before long-term damage sets in do research on alternatives to dealing with whatever condition you have .

I've been on SSDI for 11 years and 2 years after getting my SSDI I went back to work work did the 9 month trial of working.. after that 9month trial ended I went over my sga for almost 2 years they wrote me a letter threaten to cut benefits but instead of that I had to pay back 8,000 dollars they said they would take it out my benefits or not receive my checks for a whole year so I agreed to monthly payments of 200 a month for about 3 years and as long as I don't go over my sga and keep my doctor appointments as the lady that help me apply told me to do I can continue to get benefits..

Very informative. If my tenant even gets SSDI I see problems ahead for him since he said he don't have medicare + medigap insurance. When did Social Security go soft and now allowing people to earn money while working and on SSDI only. I know a person can work a certain amount of time and still draw Social Security before that person is cut off by SS office for the year. I notice my tenant wouldn't even look at me when he was telling me. He probably knew I didn't quite believe some of the stuff he was telling me. And yes he is old enough to draw Social Security.

I am 50 and appealing as I write this. I have had anxiety, OCD, depression and even ticks my whole life. It takes so long to do this and hope I don’t waste 2 years of life to be let down in the end. That will make my symptoms worse.

Your first point is right on target... and the reason that so many folks that end up on SSDI don't last very long.... they fall into bad habits or just stop living.... it's sad.

I disagree, as the SS office can not use one's drinking habits as a factor in reevaluation. The SS office can only use activities that are unlawful, and in doing so there has to have been criminal charges placed AND a guilty verdict rendered.

While I do not drink alcohol, as I am a minister, I do know that since it is not unlawful, no arrest made, that the SS office cannot use one's drinking to weigh in on their case. Secondly, they do not have to continue to be on medication, or continue visits to physicians, as this was found to be unlawful in the courts, Americans With Disabilities Act, 1964 Civil Rights Act giving disability protected class status was cited in those hearings substantiating this as intrusive, and violation of disabilities rights federal laws. I would also add re-evaluations are only for those that were not given a life-long diagnosis, those with a life long illness are not subject to continuous evals. All of this said, what are your credentials? I would add that you need to cite your sources, as your information is not accurate.

I don't take medicine anymore and I should be able to say no. I do continue therapy because I do feel I need that. But I feel the side effects of the antidepressants damaged my mind and my digestive system. Plus never once have I felt my depression relieved from medication.
So just tell them that you continue to take the meds.. they won't know.

I am in a really bad spot. I was in subsidize housing, I am on disability and I got arrested and was kicked out of my subsidize housing and there is I’m having a heckuva time finding place to live. I lost everything I lost my apartment. Oh my things I lost my dog I lost everything and now I’m homeless. Period in Montana where it’s a very cold, so yeah, my life is shit.

RE: Doris - she’s on MC Parts A & B. By your example I believe she was an inpatient. This would be paid through MC Part A, assuming she has reached the eligibility requirements, which is not on a % basis but paid on a per day rate. The normal Part B charges (lab, diagnostic imaging, pharmacy, physician visits, etc.) will also be paid on the daily rate of Part A. Part B MC is the side where you would have a 20% co-pay, assuming you have reached the minimum requirement for eligibility. These are generally outpatient services received.
I'm terminally ill and had a review done exactly 3 years after I was awarded disability. It was no problem as I'm alot worse off than I was when I was awarded, so not problem. But they gave me hardly any time to fill it out and have it back to them.

SSI is very different than SSD make sure you appreciate the nuances
@@Fee.1 The differences are money related. The medical qualifications are the same.
People on ssi can not work and earn any kind of money. If they do they shut off their checks. OK. Disabled means absolutely jot able to have a money paying job of any kind.
At 50 I went to get new glasses and they cannot give me new glasses I have an inoperable I could get him that's going to result in total blindness I have been on social security for 11 years thank God for Social Security disability and all the dirtbags in school who used to knock my glasses off and call me for eyes well they're paying for my disability but if I didn't have my little house I'd be living in a tent homeless thank God for food banks to they wanted me to see an eye doctor every year and I told them what's the point unless a miracle operation comes around there ain't nothing that can help me so I guess enjoy life before I go dark and after that I hope I don't live too long as long as I outlive my dog he helps me cope

My wife makes and sells crafts but they have to be well made and desirable. We sell a lot of it at craft shows.. you will never go over your allowable income by doing that its nowhere near it.. but it does keep her active at home, and she can sit at the sales. You meet a lot of people and they love to hear how you make them. Keep the costs of making them down don`t worry about the time it takes.. its good therapy and morale boosting.

Great question, this is Medicare Advantage plan. Eligible ones are only ages 65+ who are approved for ssdi
Apply for your state's Medicaid program. If they're like IL, they pay your Medicare premiums, plus pick up any co-pays, as long as you qualify.
I don’t understand why some people on SSDI get left alone, despite never going to the doctor. I was told repeatedly by my doctor, that if I got a job, and the employer worked with my disability, and I earned under SGA that Social Security would leave me alone. Well, they didn’t. They send you a form in the mail, that you have to fill out, and one of the first questions is, “CAN YOU WORK?“ Second question, ARE YOU WORKING? It’s a catch 22, Social Security can bump you off if you’re working no matter what.

It sounds to me like you were talking about form SSA 454 which yes the first question does ask if you work but the far right column ask for your earnings. If earnings are below the allowed amount then you are within the guidelines. If you received a different form please advise

What’s not fair, is that red states like TX, which have a $7.25 per hr minimum wage, verses very expensive blue states like MA where minimum wage is $14.25 per hour. SS doesn’t care about the considerable difference in cost of living between various states. We all have the same guidelines. But, people living in states like TX get a lot more leeway with a minimum wage of $7.25 an hour verses MA with $14.25, it’s not fair. The $14.25 an hour in MA doesn’t necessarily go any further than $7.25 an hour in TX.

That's great, but I live in a zip code that doesn't allow a Medicare advantage plan or medigap policy until I'm 65. And while my deductible was paid by the state up until last year, the 20 dollars I got for COLA made me also responsible for the deductible as well as the 20%. The income figures haven't been updated since the 1950's.

It is outrageous and sad people dont know about this.
Also some states have a program at dept of human services with a "work program" for those on medicare social security....if people even drive a family member or sit with a neighbor to help them for even 20 dollars a month, it counts as a job and qualifies one for medicaid too.
In that case people in ss hen also can receive dental under medicad and glasses....and also a dual complete united healthcare insurance plan which gives a card with money just for health care items , a bonus 30 in grocery card...to name a few things.

Covid has pretty much stopped any appointments with my VA doctors. Specialist, MRI's, EMG for my shoulder(after countless postponements). I can't even see my new primary doctor, the old one left over a year ago and my current I've seen only 1 time, and that was mid 2019. I do see my eye doctor every 6 months(some diabetes in my eyes, cataracts(they say not to worry). I'm worried when I'm up for a review in November 2022. Too soon to worry?

There ARE extenuating circumstances sometimes where ppl have needed "extra help" due to being victims of identity theft, etc. and thats not fair to them/recipient & fulling out a federal affidavit & documentung everything that youve been through is important too.

I lost number 1. I fought the first five years after being left for dead overseas with a rare hypoxic-iscemic brain injury which resulted in Parkinsonism and dystonia but then 5 years ago when i developed an untreatable corneal disease and a long list of other health issues made worse by being stuck in my dark, orison apartment with no family or close friends, i had a nervous breakdown. Covid response made. It worse as my city shut the gyms a year and a half. I became more. Crippled. Can barely walk. I have no energy to get better and I'm going to die if I can't turn this around. At age 42 my body is more rigid than an 80 year old. I'm trying to accept that I'll never have a house with a yard, a husband,get to hikeor dance, etc. I lost EVERYTHING. The covid gym shutdowns and finding out how funding effects everything, was the final nail in my coffin.

Im on something sort of like ssdi through my survivors benefits and am only 24. I have mental health issues as well as type one diabetes. The switch to Medicare was confusing as hell, and I'm terrified to get a part c because I BARELY understand a and b. There is a huge lack of info out here that younger people can understand and can find applicable, even though we too are on benefits. I really wish there was more easily digestible info out there for people my age who find this all overwhelming. Your earnings limit is the same but it’s based on your net income after expenses averaged over a period of time which is typically 12 months or a tax return

Had to go to hospital & with $84,000 in charges, under medicare only... is responsible for 20% of, so.... like $16,000 On a fixed income, that's catastrophic & impossible to pay. Apparently, would have been entitled to having a Medicare C plan instead? That had a cap/maximum out of pocket of only $3,000-$4000 instead... but never applied/switched to that. Depending on income, situation, etc.. prob could have looked into getting Medicaid as a secondary, where... nothing out of pocket. Think he was saying to be sure & look into what you are eligible for before something bad happens & then find out... in hindsight & with the huge weight of this big debt now due, personally. @@geomedina9633 a diabetic heart attack is a silent, no or few signs/symptoms heart attack. My grandfather had one. The only sign was unrelenting nausea and vomiting and he had a massive heart attack. The high blood sugars caused nerves not to signal pain.
