- This scene was also used as visual inspiration for the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode "Samaritan Snare" in Season 2 where Cpt. Picard underwent open heart surgery.
I love that he just brings the tools into the operating room, in a dirty looking cloth sack, with no indication he made any attempt to sterilize or clean them beforehand. Just makes the scene all the more creepy to think he was going to operate on someone, with alien-looking instruments that could still be brimming with bacteria from the outside world.
He was operating on mutant women, so they were likely incompatible with Earth bacteria anyway, so no big deal.
I would have been beautiful.
I always interpreted it as Beverly had gone crazy and taken up all these bizarre rituals, but none his peers could judge him as crazy because they all thought he was smarter than they were. They couldn't tell insanity from genius. A la Alan Moore "How do you tell when the world's most intelligent man has gone insane? Who's even qualified to judge that?"
And then Jeremy Irons ended up playing him!
Michael Proch full circle
We are about to witness that. AI will fall into insanity taking biological life with it
I would say anyone who SAYS he is the world's smartest man is either not mentally sound or trying to sell you car insurance
The red scrubs are a nice touch for this movie. It made a creepy movie even creepier. One of my favs.
I looked up “red suit doctors 90s movie” that’s how striking they are
This is hands down my favorite David Cronenberg movie and Jeremy Irons performance. I like how Irons show the difference between which twin he was portraying. This movie is metaphor about drug addiction, codependency, mental illness and the relationship between the siblings acting as one.
This film is a masterpiece of cinema..fucked up yes, but absolutely brilliant. Jeremy Irons is masterful. Playing identical twins, his performance is such that you know just from a few seconds of his appearance on screen which twin he is portraying.. just by the way he holds himself.
Cronenberg likes to joke to people that Canadian surgeons wear that colour when he goes outside the country but no we Canucks use green like everyone else. The film is clearly set in 1988 so its not the near future either, an alternate reality perhaps. David said he wanted to avoid the tired operating room cliches and so using the "College of Cardinals" red look was his way of putting a new spin on them. He says he only likes to capture the illusion of reality, not "real life" itself.
his movies are the mind of a madman
only kidding. but they are insane.
I assume every movie is alternate reality.
Especially Con Air.
They look way cooler in red. This is how real hospitals should be. I like the atmosphere better.
@@zztopfan5201 It looks terrifying. The operating room and red aesthetic from this film always haunted me ever since I first saw this film decades ago.
i thought it was supposed to be some symbolic imagery since the way the hoods make them look resembles valva/clitoral look.
Hands down the most psychologically disturbing movie I've ever seen.
1:34 - So that's what happened to the appendage Jeff Goldblum tore out from that deleted scene from "The Fly". It became the most horrific tool used in gynecology.
Why the hell am I watching before going to bed!
For some reason the omnious red in this scene what distrub me the most
I saw this movie at the theater in 1988. The surgeon dressing in his gown reminds me of a priest putting on vestments before a high mass.
Brilliant, brilliant film. I think Cronenberg's best. But it's necessary to see the whole film to see how far, at the point of the red surgery, one of the twins has descended into the abyss of madness.
Those outfits look so interesting! Great design!
In this film David Cronenberg loosely adapted a novel to express his obssessions: the disintegration of body and soul, the duality of the human being, doctors who can behave like technocrats (the beginning when Jeremy Irons looks like the Christ is eloquent!
The Imperial Guards hahaha
Bruh
Have you ever seen the movie? To quote one review (not mine): "Put it this way: by the time you see Beverly operating, it doesn't seem strange that he's dressed like this: [still from this scene] So it's one of those movies that kind of slowly pulls you along into places you don't really want to go; by the time Beverly has gone crazy enough to be designing his own surgical instruments ("Gynecological Tools for Operating on Mutant Women,") you're unfortunately right there with him."
I don't mean to disparage the scene (quite the opposite) but for some reason I find this hilarious.
It's meant to be.
In a sick twisted way..at 0:51
The woman has this "What the fuck!" look on her face. I'm sure the audience watching this thought the same thing.
AlephNeil Oh good I am not alone, there is some purposefully dark and twisted humor in this scene well actually the whole film but not everyone will get that.
The thing I love most about this scene is that all the other doctors and nurses just go along with it, but in real life they wouldn’t even scrub up a doctor who was so obviously nodding off on heroin (and a host of other pharmaceuticals)
I just spit laughed so hard at this comment wtf lmaoooooo “nodding off herion”
yeah smart guy, its a movie
Obgyn worst nightmare 😂
Dead ringers is a brilliant film. Easily Jeremy Irons best performance to date. I love the Cronenberg oeuvre, I literally have not seen a film by him where there wasn't something interesting or provocative. My sole nit pick is that sometimes I feel the body horror societal commentary can be a bit too blatant. Here, in dead ringers, it is wonderfully subtle. I don't know why people are complaining about the scrubs here. I can quite believe a trendy private clinic would indulge in such things.
Fun Fact: Jeremy Irons (who played the dual role of twins, Elliot and Beverly in this movie) would later go on to do the voice of the iconic Disney villain, Scar, in "The Lion King". Irons will also be playing the role of Alfred Pennyworth in the new Batman movies with Ben Affleck.
+Xanatos21 No shit
How is this a fun fact?
asking the real question here...
yeah, a fun fact would be that he's hard to anagram--"Jeremy's iron"
0:45 cow tools
I must say...this scene creeped me the fuck out!
its like HR Giger design those..its a trip out movie..Im watching it right now
When Bev tried to put his “custom” instruments into a patient-and then said the problem was deformed women-I thought of every God-complexed male gynecologist I ever suffered through…
I'm getting ASMR vibes 😂😂
"The doctors say they must operate, but there's no knowing what they'll find when they open up the wound - I will meet you on the other side of the moon."
0:25 Hello there, Cardinal Borgia
When I read the phrase "Mutant women" I think of Rogue and Mystique.
The same type of surgeons robes were used/paid homage ti in ST: TNG
1:35 It is a claw!
god damn mutant women. nothing but trouble.
this was my inspiration to become a nurse and i just graduated this year!
ive never met doctors like these twins tho. it would've been awesome.
Wtf...
Dear lord! Are you serious!???????
Lol that’s awesome.
um k
Enter the Mind of Madness 🧐
Not sure why but the way he slams his hand down when telling the nurse about the his new tools scars me
How the hell is this based on a true story
Marcus Django Whitaker my thoughts exactly bro
It's loosely based on a novel and the novel is loosely based on a true story so I think they should say 'inspired by' instead of 'based on'.
It's not lol
search for Stewart and and Cyril Marcus
I just read the book Twins by Wood and Geasland. creepy as hell. based off a true story.
@DoctorHeiterMD
1) This is very true.
2) Not sure what a Kindertoy is. I know that Kinder is German for child, though. Would it be a similar situation to the doctor's watch coming off and remaining inside the patient somewhere? Now THAT would be a very David Kronenberg thing to do!
@kittylass5 I stand by what I said, and apparently 13 people (so far) do too.
"This is how surgeons get their operating scrubs on." No kidding, I've seen it a hundred times. But the camera lingers on it for quite a while, and that small red cape looks suspiciously like the one the Pope wears, then he takes quite a while to put his arms down. I mean, COME ON! It is called SYMBOLISM.
"...Canada, maybe that's what surgeons wear there." THAT color? Highly doubtful.
Why would they dress in red for an surgical operation?
***** Oh so its a symbolic thing, I haven't seen this movie yet.
***** It's cronenberg, has he ever made a bad film?
His last three films weren't that great. Especially "A Dangerous Method", which was pretty freakin' boring.
I need Ridley Scott and Cronenberg to collab.
I need Cronenberg to tell Lanthimos less is more.
For further reference: The proper ratio is 1.66:1
Who designed the tools...HR Giger??
the worst part is that this movie is based on the true story of the Marcus twins. And what happens in this scene is partially based on a real incident where one of the twins (one had become very erratic because of drug use) jumped on top of a woman on an operating table, took off her mask and started inhaling the gas. The part about tools to operate on mutant women is totally fabricated.
Anyone else trip out on the whole mutant thing?
Give me no. 5
(I have no idea what this stuff do)
@TPoPArt - Cheers.
Maybe it's just me but I did wanted no doctor wear red outfit and have weird tools pus their going to work on my women part oh hell no
you'll never know what your doctor is doing because you'll be anaesthetised . that's what makes this scene so scary . the surgeon has real power over the patient's body .he can abuse it and you wouldn't be able to do a thing . except maybe sue him afterwards , if you're still alive that is .
As a trans-lesbian who transitioned during a midlife crisis, I understand the struggles of womanhood better than anyone. This scene in particular feels like it was made specifically for me, and me alone. It hurts to be reminded of my own vulnerabilities, and yet I find myself reaffirmed in my own narcissism. Goddess bless ye.
@kittylass5 Do surgeons wear collars like that over their lab coats?
@rem2267 why must you bring reality into this
Las escena final.¿No esta por ahí?
from the mind of berg, personally i think the movie is sick and depraved, without the good actors what is the story about?
@Gabrellus only doctors can operate sir
@abcd12345 i meant assist with operations like the nurse in the video. sowwy :X
::Vomits::
He has to match the rest of the surgical team. David Cronenberg seems like a nice guy but somewhere inside he's really deviant.
I heard an interview with him on "Fresh Air" on NPR years ago. He said some foreign dignitary was visiting Canada and said they wanted to meet a Canadian film director and asked for Cronenberg by name. The people in charge were apparently embarrassed at the idea of Cronenberg representing Canada and suggested other directors.
@@DrSamba1 The Virgin Atom Egoyan vs the Chad David Cronenberg.
Beverly... Crusher?
@rem2267 Excellent comment.
If I was a chick and I'd saw a doctor dressed like that I'd run the fuck out of there and bring the cops.
That was weird
Why do adult identical twins look exactly the same? Doesn't when they grow the difference between them become more distinct?
And yes, I have an indentical twin, lol.
It’s one actor. Playing identical twins. That’s why.
@@MACoe-qz1bw yes, and it looks dumb.
@@MACoe-qz1bw like i said, it's dumb and not very real.
They live the exact same life though so they stay looking the same. They say it's environmental changes that change your appearance over time. They are supposed to be extremely identical too where they can not be told apart at all. They're supposed to be rare. I knew two different pairs of twins like this. One set of girls and one of guys. The guys had slight differences but if u didn't know them well u couldn't tell them apart. The girls however were even more identical and couldn't tell them apart at all. I'm sure they're still like this. It varies with different twins as I'm sure it did with your twin.

Context?
Theonegamefreak The Mantle-brothers are two successful gynecologists who also take pride in having developed their own surgical instruments. When one of the brothers start put their position at risk by taking a lot of drugs his brother have to fill in for him by acting as him in all official situations. That leaves the drug addicted twin "taking responsibility" for the operations at the clinic.
Wait, what about the sober brother?
He is covering up for the drug addicted one. He realise that his brother is losing it but this scene is where it really gets out of hand. The sober brother does all the public speaking and he has to go to answer questions at a board of a medical ethics commission and pretend that he is his brother. Showing them that he is in control.
@NigerianArchitect Sorry! ;-D
oh right yeah i didnt get it at first then i was oh dear thats wrong as fuck
@abcd12345 this was your inspiration? please dont operate on anyone. If i ever see a doctor or surgeon dressed like that im gonna gtfo.
Why their suits are red?
why you no speak good english?
