The GC was the finest of all the Railways built in Britain, the pinnacle of Victorian engineering. A disgrace it was closed, and now they want to build HS2 using some of the GC's trackbed, unbelievable shortsightedness. Rick M.

Spent many hours there as a young lad. Virtually anything could turn up; most of the mineral traffic was pulled by 04/01 2 8 0s . The Bournemouth -Bradford trains would have a Hall or a Grange. Once saw Evening Star on a coal train. Happy days!

Amazing - so realistic. Coming from Nottingham and spending many hours trainspotting on the Vic, I can only admire the results. One very minor quibble - I would have preferred to see more LNER locomotives and fewer of the enemy LMS. But what a treat to see these scenes from long-ago Nottingham. Well done !!

One more small quibble: why no tank engines? I don't think I saw one in the whole video.

@@porno6361 Yes, this was a wonderful station. My local trainspotting place was Bulwell Common station, about 4 miles north of the Vic. Amazingly, there is a computer simulation of this station on youtube - look it up!

The station passed to the LNER at the Grouping in 1923, but LMS trains began running into the station in 1944, when London Road Low Level station was closed. Typical motive power for the few LMS trains was a Midland 4-4-0. The big mistake was to transfer the GC main line to the London Midland Region early in 1958 under BR's "one city, one region," rule. The LNER A3 Pacifics were transferred to the East Coast Main Line at the end of the summer of 1957, and, from then on, there was a steady replacement of LNER motive power with that of the LMS, in particular the ubiquitous Black 5. Both Annesley and Colwick sheds were transferred to the London Midland Region over the years. Apparently LNER locos were recorded over this main line until within a few days of closure.

Probably the most central station in the country. Nottingham now has the worst train service of any major city in England, and that is official.

Think how much the GC main line would be so valuable for HS2 today. Could have had a rebuilt Nottingham Vic station under the shopping centre and flats,as Birmingham New St was rebuilt. There were initial plans for a 2 platform station when designing the original plans in the mid 1960s for this, but unfortunately was discarded in the usual shortsighted way. 50 years later, the 'if only' is rife! We'll never learn in this country.

There was no need to build the Victoria Centre; the Broad Marsh Centre was already there. Thank God that a shopping centre was not built on top of the station. Birmingham New Street was absolutely ghastly after its mid-sixties rebuilding. There were no facilities at platform level; the platforms were dark and dingy, and reeked of diesel fumes. The latest rebuilding of New Street is not much better, as the station is still pretty grim at platform level.
