Devil's Island is the smallest island of the three islands making up the Salvation group of islands, in the Atlantic ocean, nine miles off the coast of French Guiana. The island was part of the infamous French penal colony of French Guiana over 101 years, from 1852 to 1953.
Its most famous inmates were Captain Alfred Dreyfus, a wrongly accused political prisoner and the fictional "Papillon" of a book by the same name, written by Clément Duval.
Wonderful video. Thanks for posting. I wish I will visit Guinana one day.

Enjoyed your video. We were supposed to visit there yesterday, but the seas were too rough to land. Maybe someday we will make it.
Sorry you missed your visit. Rough seas are always a problem. I missed the Falkland Islands for the same reason. But like you said maybe next time.
Papillon 🦋
I thought Dreyfus has been kept since day one on devil's Island but they built solitary confinement for him on the island later to ensure he couldn't escape.
Possibly.
Yes I’m pretty sure you’re right.
You can still see his prison cell on devils island from royale. He was not confined to solitary, but he was forced to stay in his shack with an armed guard outside on devils island.
When the newer version of papillon staring Charlie Hunnam and Rami Malek that can out last year was one of my favorite movie it was Amazing I love true story movies
THAT WAS GRATE LOVED IT TKS
You’re welcome and thanks for the positive feed back.

Hi Pierre! I would love to speak with you about possibly getting your permission for using this footage in a TV documentary! Or if you could point me in the direction of who owns this footage. Thanks!
Hi Corsica:
Yes, I own the rights to this video through Pierre Repooc Productions. Tell me what you have in mind for using this footage please.
Regards, Pierre
@@PierreRepooc Thanks Pierre!
We are a documentary show about prisons and we have an episode on Devil's Island, so we would use the beginning shots of the island from the water and some of the shots of the building/prison structures on the island. Let me know if that's something you'd be open to letting us use!

You have my permission to use the video. A credit which mentions Pierre Repooc Productions would be appreciated.

Yes, walking uphill all the way in hot and steamy 98 degree weather made me somewhat short of breath.

One of the all time great movie s.
I read Papillon fifty years ago, a superb book! Recently i watched Papillon on tv and thought i might read that book again. I've read the first 100 pages, glad i did go back to it.
3.25 very few prisoners made back to France..so this prison sentence was permanent ?
it wasnt just most didnt survive the first year of their sentence on the island...
75% death rate
Those sentenced to the bagne were usually legally banished from metro France, meaning that once freed, they had to remain in Guyane.
it was shut in 1947 . get it right
I mean really, was that important?
