Devil's Island is the smallest island of the three islands making up the Salvation group of islands, in the Atlantic ocean, nine miles off the coast of French Guiana. The island was part of the infamous French penal colony of French Guiana over 101 years, from 1852 to 1953.
Its most famous inmates were Captain Alfred Dreyfus, a wrongly accused political prisoner and the fictional "Papillon" of a book by the same name, written by Clément Duval.

Enjoyed your video. We were supposed to visit there yesterday, but the seas were too rough to land. Maybe someday we will make it.

Sorry you missed your visit. Rough seas are always a problem. I missed the Falkland Islands for the same reason. But like you said maybe next time.

I thought Dreyfus has been kept since day one on devil's Island but they built solitary confinement for him on the island later to ensure he couldn't escape.

You can still see his prison cell on devils island from royale. He was not confined to solitary, but he was forced to stay in his shack with an armed guard outside on devils island.

      @@PierreRepooc Thanks Pierre!
We are a documentary show about prisons and we have an episode on Devil's Island, so we would use the beginning shots of the island from the water and some of the shots of the building/prison structures on the island. Let me know if that's something you'd be open to letting us use!

Yes, walking uphill all the way in hot and steamy 98 degree weather made me somewhat short of breath.

Those sentenced to the bagne were usually legally banished from metro France, meaning that once freed, they had to remain in Guyane.
