  • Full title reads: "France. Off to Devil's Isle! 673 convicts leave in Prison Ship 'Le Martineiere' for notorious penal settlement - from which few ever return."
France. (Voiceover in wonderful French accent).
Convicts walk in line along dockside. They are carrying sacks with their belongings in slung over their shoulders.
The convicts walk slowly across the gang plank onto a boat which will take them away to exile and hard labour. The boat moves out from the dock and we see the prisoners on the deck.
The boat docks alongside the Prison Ship 'Le Martineiere'. The convicts climb up a ladder onto the Ship.
Shot of Prison Ship from boat as it sails away.
N.B. I think these convicts are off to Devil's Island, the French Penal Colony off French Guiana. The life in this Colony was set out in the book Papillion by Henri Charriere.

In this case and the American chain gangs back then, you didn’t do time, you did slow death! Few ever returned because they died of overwork, starvation, disease, and filthy living conditions.

The kind of mentality that enabled places like this to exist. Some things never change, unfortunately
