Hello HomeHacks, I just purchased several sets of the Hettich undermount 18" drawer slides and installed one set with a template drawer. The drawer is has plenty of room in the space. The drawer box and mounted slides are all square. When I open and close the drawer, it does not glide, instead, it feels like I'm gliding on sandpaper. The drawer does not glide open or glide to a close and catch the soft-close function. It's something I am not doing correctly. Any trouble shooting tips or ideas?

Are you using 1/2 inch thick drawer boxes instead of 5/8? You need to add the 1/8 spacer in between the latch and edge of the drawer box. I made this mistake too and didn’t realize it until later.

Mine isn’t as smooth as I’d like. Does it break in?

Check to make sure your drawer box and slides are square. Also double check that the space between the drawer box and sides is correct. If the spacing is off it can cause tension and not be smooth. All my drawers here and in my kitchen were smooth.

you make life installing drawer slide difficult for yourself.
use some spacers to set them on, 1/4” ply, and the block you have to secure the sides should run the whole length.
holding the slide with your finger and using a level is silly.
be kind to yourself, use spacers and leave them in there

Yeah did that approach when I built our kitchen and installed all its drawers. Definitely faster.

Way too complicated. You already cleated out front, just cleat out the back too. No reason to use the back clips.

    • @homehackshowtos

There is some play in the back clips that helps and they can slide forward and backward. I have done both approaches and find using the back clips makes it easier.

@@homehackshowtos I personally like the idea of cleating the back side too for strength. The back end for me is very thin particle board and unlikely strong enough to hold the weight of the drawer. It is not easy to do when you have the countertop attached but it may be worth it.

Agree. When I made our kitchen I did side cleats. In the case of this bench it was all 3/4 plywood so the back was strong.
