    I love your reviews. They are thorough and especially I like how you compare it to the books since I have not read the books. But mostly I like that you get to the point and have good insights unlike the other popular outlander podcasts that really just like to hear themselves talk and they go on and on for like an hour and a half. Keep up the good work. Remember, haters gonna hate.

      I think a lot of it is people just don't think before they jump to correct. I don't see malice in it, but I'm also honest about what gets on my nerves. Haha! Maybe that's a flaw of my own. But I just do my best.

    I love the pacing of this episode, it was good! Aw I loved that soldier who had his hat askew in Jamie's men line up, he was so cute. But it also shows how many men who were not trained military went to fight. I agree with Bree's plot, it could have been faster, but I think the show wanted to balance it out with the Claire's timeline. And haha, I love Claire's surgeries, they are fascinating, I'm sad they didnt show it in detail 😂 I love how much Lord John I'm seeing so far, more please!

    Diana has talked about the fact that the scripts are basically written by committee. She writes the script and then the writers room makes changes. It goes back and forth a few times. Diana makes suggestions, but in the end she doesn’t have final say on the final script. She recently said in an interview that she wasn’t thrilled with some of the changes that were made on 714. I thought you could tell what dialogue was written by Diana and what dialogue was not. I agree having John in irons in the medical tent was weird. In the books, John was among the troops that Jamie was inspecting. Claire sees him and then John surrenders personally to Jamie. I love Jane! I wish they had not spread out Brianna’s timeline. It is rather confusing. All in all, I really liked this episode. It was better than 713 and I am enjoying this season. Love your recaps and comparisons. Thank you for doing them, Jen!

    • @TheBookRefuge

      Yes, I think they needed another scene with John in the camp before Jamie and Claire. To fill that in. But another viewer explained that John WAS freed when he took his oath. And when Jamie finds him, he turns himself in, and is re-shackled. So it was only a short reprieve. Haha! But the show kinda misses some of it.
      Yeah, this season has been really great with the dialogue overall though. Lots of lines write from the material.
      It's been a solid season. I'm enjoying it so much.

    Oh just dropping by again with a crackpot theory.
    So number 1, I love how quick your videos come out. I watch the episode the minute it is released on Starz and cannot wait to hear analysis on it :D
    Number 2- The mystery with percey wainright/beachaump is intriguing to me. I think that somehow claire is a descendent of fergus and marsali. In one of the Lord John books percey is described as having eyes the color of sack sherri and claires eyes in the book are also described as being sherri colored. Im curious what connection if anything claire could have with percey. Its a very small chance because perceys wife's sister was fergus' mom and therefore wouldnt share any genetics with fergus but i think she is maybe purposefully wanting us to connect claire with percey. The best part about this theory is it means leg hair would be claires ancestor.

    I appreciate you doing your Outlander recaps. I found your channel because of them, and I look forward to them as much as new episodes of the show! ❤️
    I love Jane and the history stuff too! I wish Bree’s scenes had been in one episode, focused on just her and Roger. How it’s been done ruins the pacing of the show. I feel the same way about Ian and Rachel as you do. I was also confused about John being in irons after he’d sworn an oath. That made no sense.

    • @harsharnsandher1363
      @harsharnsandher1363 2 дня назад +1

      The pacing is all wrong. Young Ian and Rachel had a double Quaker one with Rachel’s brother and Dottie (who along with her dad Hal and Jenny are excluded in this series). They do not wed until after the battle of Monmouth in the book. Jamie and Claire don’t stay in Lord John’s house in the book, but at Fegus’s Print shop. From there both of them go to the campsite.

    • @TheBookRefuge
      @TheBookRefuge  2 дня назад +1

      Yup... I believe I make those points in my video...
      They have to make changes to make the show work. It was still very accurate in the dialog and with using what they have. I liked it a lot.

    Seems like they were setting up the backstory for why Hal isn’t there. He sent LJG in his place and we won’t see him again. Excited to see how the last two episodes wrap up. I think we may end at the next to last book. That’s a lot to cover, but not impossible ✅

    • @TheBookRefuge
      @TheBookRefuge  2 дня назад +2

      I think you are correct about the Hal stuff. Saying his "gout" kept him from travelling. Haha! Whatever, would be nice to have him, but at least we got the scene. That was cool to at least acknowledge he exists.

    My biggest gripe with this episode (and a little bit last episode) was the snow on the ground in the 1778 timeline. The battle of Monmouth is a historical event Outlander is interpreting and it is well documented it took place at the end of June 1778 in NJ during a heatwave (where many died of heat exhaustion instead of enemy fire), so why film it in the winter with snow on the ground? I’m just so confused why that call was made.

    Funny you didn't like "Journey Cake"--that one was one of my favorites. As for the missing characters, I think a lot of that is due to the limitations of adapting the books to a TV format that is time limited. After all, these episodes are a mere hour long, and when you stack that up against thousands of pages of source material, pretty hard to represent all of that in a show like this. Agree with your assessment about how shuffled up all the 1980's stuff is, but again, a lot of that is due to the challenges of adapting this story to the small screen...

    Were show watchers supposed to recognize Callahan when Rob showed up? Supposedly Callahan and Richardson are the same person…I can’t remember if that was confirmed in Bees or not. In the episode they zoomed in on his face for a weird amount of time.

    This was more of a filler episode. Nothing important really happened. John's freaky eye really freaked me out. I wonder how they did that. I loved when Jamie said to John "Go save our son".

      I don't think it was as much of a filler episode as last week though.. there were some very significant things going on here. Which I think maybe more obvious upon a rewatch of the season. But then again, I loved all the Jane & William stuff and the Lafayette and Washington scenes. The history moments are some of my favorite in the books.
      But big things are coming still! Whoop Whoop!

    This was definitely a set up episode to get us to the battle and climax of the season. The Bree stuff felt so disjointed since all her clips felt like one or two minutes. Loved seeing the weight of leadership that Jamie is feeling. Excited for next weeks episode.

    • @TheBookRefuge
      @TheBookRefuge  2 дня назад

      Right? I still maintain, that there should have just been one episode in like, the middle of this season that focused on both Bree and Roger and the parallels they are living.
      But I get that they probably didn't want to just drop that storyline for ages. But they did that in seasons past when Bree and Roger aren't the main focus. We could have done it here too.
      Their whole stories could have been in one 90 minute episode. Then have them pop back up where they pop up.
      But whatever. I get it. I think when the season is binged int he future, it may fit better.

    When the rebels found John, they took off his irons and he swore allegiance and joined the Continental Army. He was not in irons during all his time with them. When he surrenders himself to Jamie, he becomes Jamie’s prisoner and is therefore put into irons again.

  • @irisclaudia3670

    Dear Jen, I didn't even realize you made a mistake in the dates. You are so great and doing so good that this never comes to my radar. And even if I would notice I would never say anything, you do a hell of a job, and I hate nitpicking. We all are human . Big deal. As for the episode I adore William , I love that character, I always have, books and show William. So many have complained about the little Claire and Jamie time, but I am extremely happy about each and every character. It's a huge tapestry in the latter books, and Jamie and Claire become only one of many couples, even if they , of course, always lead the way. I was wondering if Jenny ever comes to the US on the show ? It's different than in the books, I hope, this wasn't the last we have seen of Kristin Atherton. And Brianna is hardly there either, the few scenes with her surprise me. In the books she has so much more to do. I know there are many plotlines and characters to cover , but I feel she is underused somehow. I also feel sorry for Sophie, she gets a lot of hate from fans and that annoys me. Yes, show Bree is different, but Sophie works with the material that she gets. I love character Bree and her actress Sophie. Anyway, I bow and raise my hat for your brilliant videos with all the insight and thoughts , you put a lot of time into it. I truly appreciate that from the bottom of my heart.

      @TheBookRefuge  2 дня назад +1

      Thank you for your kind words. I will soldier on. Haha!
      I do not think we'll get more Jenny, honestly. I don't like to think that... but I just don't think we will... Maybe in season 8... But I don't know.
      I think we deserve more of Bree too. However, I am rereading this section of the books right now... and honestly... they kinda got most of their story from 1980 covered... I wish it wasn't so spread out, but they covered most of it. I was surprised, because I feel like there was so much more, but they are getting a lot of it.
      I'm excited for the finale of this season because I bet it will be epic!

    Can anyone explain the "you have 299 men under your command, you can parole me" comment by John? Who is the 1 who makes up the 300? John is a prisoner, so he is *not* one of the 300, right? That line confused me when he said it and I still don't get it! 🤣

    • @TheBookRefuge
      @TheBookRefuge  2 дня назад +1

      From what another viewer commented, John was actually maybe counted in that original number. Because he joined up when he was "saved" and he wasn't a prisoner until he turned himself into Jamie personally... So I believe he was supposed to be one of Jamie's soldiers until then?
      That is how I took it. But it also could have just been a misplaced quip.

    • @yoshimijulia118

      I think in the books, he was part of the line of up men Jamie was looking at, and Claire sees him first, it was a whole funny scene. and then John surrenders himself to Jamie.
