- Cord King firewood processor demonstration. I decided to make a video that I would have like to have seen when shopping for a firewood processor. This machine is a good entry level processor that is quite capable of producing significant amounts of firewood. I try to show my workflow including start up, moving, cleanup and lots of cutting and splitting.

Great Video, very well done. You definitely did a great job of showing the work flow and setup details. Loved how you used your tractor to do take down/setup and never having to do any heavy lifting.
Thanks! Appreciate your comment. It is possible to lift the log deck by hand but it is very awkward so I welded the pipe and chains to take that out of the process

Friend, I watched every minute of your video, there is just something about us older guys that like to work alone, we have to be smarter at how, and what we do...While I dont quite have the setup you do, we do alot of the very same things, I dont have a processor yet, Lord willing, maybe someday I will, I sell around 75 to 100 full cords a year, so I really could use one. Bottom Line is, I like your operation, and it works.

Thanks man! It took a few years to figure it out. I do about 100 cord a year. I admire all that can do that without a processor. 100 cord doesn't really cover much more than expenses. I do it mainly because not doing it might kill me.. lol Thanks for watching and leaving such a positive comment!

Im looking at this same unit. What would you change if you did it over again? I was looking at the 4 and 6 way knife, seems like the 6 could do it all? Would you go belt or chain conveyor? Any upgrades you wish you had got that you dont have?
@@fritz1022 I like the belt conveyor but it needs cleats. Wood won't go up when it is wet at all. I got the bolts and 1" angle iron to put on. I havn't run it in the winter yet so don't know how it will be when it freezes. 8 ft. log deck would be nice. Hydraulic deck lift would be nice. I have to add a jack to the conveyor somehow. Needs sone metal attached to the fraame around the saw to catch mist and dust the comes off the tip of the bar. I wear a mask to keep the oil mist out of my lungs I like the 6 way wedge.
All that said I am super happy with it the way it is (except lack of cleats). I only sell about 100 cord a year so only run it a few weeks a year
That is one slick setup 👌. That little length stop cylinder is on the same circuit as the blade I imagine. I found that pretty interesting.

Loved the simple life, so peaceful! Enjoyed the video. I'm seriously thinking about buying a CK18-20. How often do you sharpen the chain? How long does a chain last? I'm looking to store my firewood in the open air but want some kind of mat/floor that my tractor bucket can scoop it up when needed. No issues with the wood rotting, molding? Thanks!
If the wood is clean the chain lasts twenty or thirty cords between sharpenings. I replace the chain and bar after about 200 cords because things work better with fresh parts. I put the wood on geotextile to keep it out of the dirt. To load with tractor you would need some sort of pavement. No rotting or mold. I try to cut on warm summer days so it gets a good start at drying. Thanks for watching.. good luck

What are you using under the piles of processed wood? Looks like some kind of waterproof membrane. Would keep things from getting into the mud? How's it for loading off of it assuming you use a loader to do so?

I load everything by hand. I got some geotextile at Ritchie brothers this summer pretty cheap. It was non permeable to I had to punch a bunch of holes through it. An experiment that I hope works. Some but not too much wood would get muddy and freeze down so I'm trying this. I would really like to get an excavator with a grapple to load but too expensive for my pension to pay for since the wood pays for little... haha
Excellent video! Best real world example of a Cord King m18-20 in action. I am planning on purchasing the same model. I notice that you do not have Auto Clamp or Auto Split. If you had to do it over again, would you purchase those options or recommend them to others? It looks like you have the rhythm down, but would it be more ergonomic to have those features when processing 500-1000 cords per year?
Thanks for your comment. I'm not sure how to answer your question. I am content with the machine. Yeah I would like a longer log deck that has hydraulic lift. I would also like be able to put longer logs on the deck. It was a big investment as it was for me so Im satisfied with what I picked. As for the controls I don't mind the clamp as is. Not sure about autocycle because having a free hand while things are happening might increase the tendency to stick that hand where it doesn't belong Or somthing gets behind the pusher and does damage on the return stroke. I do get a sore lefft shoulder if i spend too many hours on the machine. Not entirely sure if it is caused by this machene or if I injured it during a fall on the unit you see in the beginning and the processor aggrivates that injury. If I was doing 1000 cord/year or more I would probably upgrade to a fancier machine with joysticks and a few other upgrades. I do under 200 cord so this thing i just fine. The bigger investment would'nt make much sense. I am approaching 70 so not going to be making any changes.. Haha

Yes drys very well in the rows. This type of wood rots in log form within a few years. Doesn't dry at all in log form.

Sometimes yes but usually I haul them with my gooseneck trailer. I have a video called "John Deere 5403 Loading logs" that shows how I do it. Thanks!!

Cord King is much better in many ways
From the way the chain bar comes down before the ram piston is fully retracted I'd guess you've done this a couple of times before.
Never thought about it too much but probably can cut a cord in saved seconds in a day. Thanks for watching!
Which wedge seems to work best and what’s the avg tree diameter you cut? Thanks 😊
I like the 6 way. It is the only one I have. Trees range from 6 to 18 inch. When splitting the larger ones some of the pieces can be quite large. Customers are mostly ok with that

@@Bill-1005 If you go with 8 way make sure you talk to them about cycle times because i believe they recomend a higher tonnage cylinder which could slow the machine down significantly in my opinion. I may be wrong

Why is the saw chain turning when it's not in use.
It idles when not in use. At first I didn't like it but now I am happy with it.. lets me know if it is getting enough oil or not. It stops when dry
Don't understand why you don't lower the wedge with the smaller logs?

entry level? i looked these up and they are expensive. it does a nice job but the cheapest one i saw was $37,5000
This was an upgrade for me from what I would consider a homeowner or hobby model. This is the smaller of the professional models
Why the mask does the roana virus get transported in log length firewood. That's kinda like wearing a mask in your car when your driving by yourself lol.
Mask is for chain oil mist wood dust that I seem to be sensitive to. I'm using thin oil so it mists quite a bit. Had a box of those masks that I never use and they work great for this.. light and easy to slip on and off
