    Tarka is a 1973 Albin Vega 27 (8.2m) that I bought sight-unseen and without sailing experience on the island of St. Martin in April of 2017. I was thrust head-first into ocean sailing as I got Tarka safely south from what would become the most devastating hurricane seasons on record. We are now working our way west towards the Pacific.
    Additional support for Tarka’s sail for CORAL (The Coral Reef Alliance) comes from contributions by:
    Soylent - Healthy provisioning for the long offshore passages
    Sta Lok - Swage-less terminals for portions of Tarka’s rigging, making it an easy DIY job and allowing for easy inspection
    Victron Energy - Providing monitoring solutions for Tarka's batteries, to ensure we always have enough juice to do what we need to.

    On my bucket list for sure, one day I'll volunteer as a line handler and do it for sure, but not on my own boat, my real bucket list item is rounding Cape Horn, I'm just about to do Cape Point (Port Elizabeth to Cape Town, delayed by a few days due to 4 days of 40 to 60 knot SE winds off cape point), which is one of my other bucket list items, my main one is a no canal solo circumnavigation, with a lot of lower latitude sailing. Finding the right boat within my budget is proving to be a challenge, as you'd expect.
    Great experience for sure, as a small yacht, a very stressful and scary two days, lots of big vessels way too close for comfort, I'm sure I'd feel more comfortable in 40 knots off Cape Point or Cape Horn than motoring in amongst all those ships. Have a great transit, and enjoy a once in a lifetime experience, fair winds and safe sailing

    Grew up there, in the Panama Canal Zone. Made quite a few transits through there. Won't miss it. Even did a transit in the annual cayuco race we used to do during the Canal Zone days. Took us 3 days to paddle a cayuca(dug out canoe) from the atlantic to the pacific ocean. My dad had quite a few jobs when he worked for the canal zone. A police officer, bording officer, customs agent and finaled out as an admeasurer. Did alot of fishing and spearfishing, there. See the rates have gone way up for the yachties and ya got ta feed them? Wonder when that started. Nice vid. Well done.

      "The other way" would be a wild experience! Could be a lot of fun with the right weather ;). We considered sticking Tarka on a trailer and having her driven across the Isthmus as an alternative, but it would have been more expensive, and probably more stressful.

      What other options are realy there? Rounding the Cap costs as much in fuel, marinas, broken part and never knowing, where to put your anchor down, due to wind, currenrs and bad weather. You could go up to Canada, sail into the St. Lawrence Stream as far into Canada as possible. I got a Quote last year to transport my 35ft Sailboat over the Rockies to Vancouver, it was 18.000 Canadian Dollars. Astronomically high. That really leaves the panama canal, even do I dont like it at all. Rover

    So curious to see how you handled so many bodies on Tarka re: beds and poop storage. Did you look into trailering instead? I have no idea if that's an option but seems more appealing than dealing with 5 overnighters and potentially 7 during the day on small boats like ours.

    • @TheAdventuresofTarka
      @TheAdventuresofTarka  4 года назад +1

      Haha um. Well, the toilet situation was handled delicately -- it wasn't an issue though. We did spend a lot of time researching trailering, but it's not a common thing that's done, and would definitely cost more and likely be more stressful than a transit would be. I read an article about a couple that had their boat trailered across Guatemala instead of doing the canal. It sounded like a multi-day nightmare, and was quite expensive.

    Good job! How are you going to have 6 people stay overnight and feed them hot meals on Tarka? I ask just because its on bucket list with a small boat. Its looking like going the long way could be interesting all you have to do is have your will made out.

      It ended up being 5 people spending the night, and 2 advisors during the day. For sleeping the 5, it wasn't too bad. We slept in the v-berth, and our 3 line handlers slept on our two saloon bunks, and then whoever drew the short straw slept on the floor. We did have a hammock outside as well, but it was raining sporadically during the night.

    It looks like that he has lost all his ambition. There are in the last 8 Month not many Videos made.Before almost every week. It would be nice as to know why? Got enough Money together to not respond no more, or not enough? Did you get bored, went home, or simply became the pressure too much? Would be nice to know, as I said.

      @@WabeTM Hi Sebastian. No, that has happended 1 year or so earlier. He went back, his Girlfriend was in the meantime on the Boat. After that they sailed to Panama and did the Channel-crossing into the Pazific. All that was LATER. Still, it is cheap to suddenly stop WITHOUT any explanation, no matter what the reason! He was building a realtionship with his Followers and that comes with kind of a Responsibility. Especially if some of us are Blue Water Sailors as well. For me, not hearing anything from him could mean, that he may be in severe personal or finacial or other Trouble. Does he needs help? Can something be arranged for the both of them? Whas there an emergency, are THEY STILL ALIVE AND WELL!!! All News as to what happened, are better then not a sound, no information at all! I personally find such a behavior NOT ok, as I said, at least inform the People that you STOP sharing your live, or I have enough, or I don't like it no more, or even Fuck Off. All is better, then Nothing!
