- This kit is designed for the mid tower (not SFF or small form factor) desktops. It allows you to connect standard PC case I/O headers to the Dell Optiplex 390, 3010, and 3020 motherboards. These are often used to build budget gaming PC’s using decommissioned office desktops and convert them to work with modern PC cases. Warning, connecting these adapters in the wrong orientation or with the wrong models could result in damage to your motherboard. Do not use these adapters with models other than the ones mentioned above.

Just got my 6 pin power button mod on Ebay. Used it on my Dell OptiPlex 7010 for an external power button. LED, Power On, Hold to reset all works great, no errors. Thanks so much for actually creating a solution for a kind of obscure problem. Remember to install it with the arrow pointed at the empty pin area. On the 7010 it is upside down compared to this video.
That's correct the arrow points to the missing pin on power buttton/LED adapter. We'll make a video on that when we have our adapter set read for the 7010 boards.

that was an informative video. i wish i had this information before i took out the dell 3010 motherboard out of my after market case but at least i now have this video for the future.
This kit fried my PC, I've built several PCs over the years, installed it with the power off and psu unhooked, when I powered my PC on it no longer outputs video with or without the kit. And one of my ram slots stopped working... super Glad i spent 25 dollars to fry my whole PC....
That is an issue is unrelated to adapter we sell given that one of your RAM slots has stopped working. Keep in mind that the RAM slot has direct electrical connections to the CPU and not any other part of the motherboard such as the power button header or USB header. Sounds like you may have a damaged CPU socket or a bad CPU. Also there could have been an error in installing the motherboard in a different case resulting in multiple issues as you are describing.
@@HarbinRepairs while it's possible that the ram issue may be unrelated and purely coincidental, I can't ignore the fact that my PC was perfectly operational for months of daily use in the new case, I just had to press f1 on startup.. until i installed this kit, and now will for some reason not output video in any way. I double checked everything to make sure it was all plugged in correctly before hooking the power supply back up and powered it on. The instructions explicitly state that if installed incorrectly it could damage the motherboard so my assumption is that some of the solder traces on the kit may have been crossed causing my issue, not sure why it hapenned. But I am 100% certain it was installed correctly as per the instructions

Fun fact: If you happen to own a Bluetooth keyboard. The computer will not recognize any keyboard on boot (because no driver is loaded at the time) which will also throw an error saying no keyboard found. But then it will let you boot into windows without pressing F1 because... well you obviously cannot press F1 to continue. On the login screen, all drivers are loaded correctly, by then the computer will function normally.
I literally de-pin everything and rewire it with black cables when doing a case swap. Takes about 30min, but the end result looks like it came from the factory.
I wish someone made one for the SFF
if it’s not working you may have to turn the adapter the other way around. that’s what i did and it worked

Used the headers on the Dell 3020 and it worked like a charm, no error messages of any kind.

Do you make adapters to do the exact opposite of this? Like if I wanted to put an aftermarket mobo & ryzen cpu in my dell 7010 mt case to make a sleeper build?
We don't currently since it would be confusing for those who are looking for Optiplex motherboard adapters and there's not much demand for it. Honestly a sleeper build would make more sense in a much older case.

I noticed on the website it says that the dell precision 3620 isnt officially supported because the adapter touches the m.2 slot. does that mean i shouldnt attempt to use it with that model? or that i shouldnt use the adapter kit if im using my m.2 slot?
I really hope someone sees this and can answer me. Long story short, My son's computer was damaged and it was an old Dell XPS Desktop. I was putting it together tonight with some new parts and a new case, when I realized the USB connector from the case has the missing pin on the opposite corner than the motherboard. Will this kit solve this? I'm praying it does and I can order it and get it before his Birthday on October 5th...Hope to hear back. To be honest, I'm not entirely sure if I need the other adapters, but I do know the motherboard is NOT labeled when it comes to the lights and front panel connectors, so maybe that adapter will help me there as well. Hey Can you help me I plug the power sw in the power switch the led + in the led - in the top right power I plug the front hdd in the right spot I also have front audio connectors but my gaming pc has only usb 3.0 connectors in my dell optiplex 3020 has 2.0 usb connectors I plug the little switch in it but it still pops up errors can you help!
As stated in the video all adapters must be plugged in including the USB 2.0 adapter and the front panel audio to get rid of the error.

You showed yourself changing the LED on the front with a button on the case. My case came with a "LED" Header, where did you put that one on the adapters ?
If you are referring to the power LED on the front panel, yes you plug that into the power LED on the adapter even if its just labeled "LED", sounds like you have a case with only one LED which is fine.
That is the old reset button on the case, it was plugged into an RGB controller that is separate from the motherboard, it is powered by one of the additional SATA/Molex power connectors on the power supply. The adapters have nothing to do with the

Great adapters very handy. The case I'm using has only USB 3.0 front panel ports so nothing to plug into the 2.0 USB header. Any work around for the i/o error in that situation?
The USB 2.0 port header has one pin sticking out from the rest which is for detection, just jump that pin to the one next to it to ground it and that should get rid of the error if you don't have a USB 2.0 front panel. Make sure to double check the pinout for the USB 2.0 header on google images.

i fixed the front i/o error by looking at the usb i was putting into the green socket..theres an extra black earth wire on the dell one..so i just jumped a wire in my usb plug ..the one above the black hole over to the earth wire to its left.. just used a piece of wire and it works..i also now have the usb ontop of the pc working... stop video at 2.28..

I've got an old optiplex case that I want to put modern hardware inside as a sleeper PC, are there any kits to do the opposite of this and adapt the proprietary optiplex front I/O connector and power button to work with standard motherboards?
There's nothing on the market that we know of, for custom stuff like that we recommend splicing the wires since there's very few people who are interested in this.
A fan adapter that lets the motherboard control all fan upgrades, esp controlling the cpu fan.
does the power button adapter get rid of the cable error? Im using a dell optiplex 9020mt in a virtual pinball cabinet. I've extended the button contact wires to a button mounted externally on the cabinet. I'm getting a power error that requires hitting f1 to continue startup.
You must have both adapters installed to get rid of the front panel errors. A "power" error might be a separate issue unrelated to the front panel.
@@HarbinRepairs I'm still using the front IO in the case. What I've done is taken the switch wires from the board and disconnected them from the optiplex switch and connected to an external switch. Now getting power button cable failure

The kit in the video will not work, however you can find a link in the description for the kit that works with the Optiplex 9010.
Maybe you can help me. I have a Vostro 270, the power/reset/hdd wires are in one connector. The wires are not labeled, but I want to connect this switch to a regular motherboard's header pins for these. Basically doing the opposite of what you show, putting a modern system in an old Dell case. Any thoughts or solutions? Appreciate it!
We don't currently have any adapters to do the reverse wiring, splicing the cable would be the better option.

I followed the guide step by step on my dell optiplex 3020 mt board and I’m still getting the error on my pc. I plugged in all the adapters too. The power button on the front case io works to start the pc so I know the pwr switch adapter is working. The front usb on the case io isn’t working but seems to detect when I plug something in (it tells me usb isn’t recognised while in windows). Hdd diagnostic adapter is not lighting up so I’m not really sure about that. There is a blue USB f 1 header that has nothing on it but I’m not sure if that’s the issue. Any ideas?
I just realised the reason the hdd diagnostic isn’t doing anything is because I don’t have a hdd in the system lol. So not the problem
If you are getting a USB not recognized error then you might have the USB adapter plugged in upside down, this can also cause a front panel error. If it is in the correct orientation and still giving you an error in windows then your front panel USB cable might be way too long or poor quality, also the internal headers cannot push much power so USB hard drives or higher power devices may throw that error in windows when using the front panel USB. The best thing to do is try the old Dell front panel USB cable and see if the problem persists.
@@HarbinRepairs I figured out the usb not recognized error. I heard that the green front panel headers on the motherboard only supports usb, not usb 2.0 which my case io has. I basically fixed it by using the blue usb headers instead which worked. I am still getting the front i/o error though. I even used a header jumper on pins 8 and 10 on the green headers and it didn't fix the error either. At this point I am unsure what the issue could be.
@@BooToob Something I forgot to mention is some cheaper cases have a front panel audio adapter that does not have the detect pin grounded resulting in the motherboard thinking the front panel audio isn't connected and it will throw a front panel error.
@@HarbinRepairs Front panel audio does work so im assuming that the HD-AUDIO cable works as well. You can plug in a pair of headphones and audio works fine.

If you don't have the fan plugged in then you will get a fan error.

We only have it available on our website and eBay at the moment, you might be able to find an internal USB 2.0 header splitter board if you want to plug in more than one internal USB device. The green port is also a USB 2.0 header.
Any plans to support the Dell Tower Optiplex 7040, I am thinking of getting one for this purpose, and quiet happily put it together, I just don't really understand the technical side of things.

As long as you have all of the adapters plugged in and the front pane; audio then the error should go away.

Check the included manual for detailed installation instructions, if you have an SFF model and not a DT or MT model then the adapter kit will not work.
Just out of curiosity, can't you just press f1 to continue and use the pc as normal? Let me rephrase. Does this boot up error disable the pc?
Yes you can press F1 to continue however it can be annoying when Windows does an update automatically and you come back later and the computer is still on the "press F1 to continue" screen.

No it will not work, it is an SFF model.
Would this work for the 5040 and 7040? My project is a power Mac G5 ATX conversion with either of the two aforementioned boards. I want to retain the Mac button which uses only a power button + and a led +. Any advice?
Our power button adapter linked in the description will work with that model however keep in mind that the motherboard hole pattern is not the same as a standard ATX case.

@@HarbinRepairs Quick question. I broke off the plastic "shroud/cover" for the front panel connector ON the motherboard because the CASE front panel cables would not fit. Would the adapter still stick to the motherboard without the plastic "shroud/cover." If the adapters won't stick, would it be a good idea to put a tiny dab of super glue on the adapter to plug into the motherboard?

Hi Harbin Repairs, I bought the Power button adapter on from your eBay store and I am having a difficult time getting it to work. I followed instructions in the video and its not working at all. I carefully triple checked my work and I am sure I am following the exact instructions. I even flipped the case connector wire so +- side can be opposite I thought maybe that was the issue.
Its the same story with the power led as well. It simply will not work. Please help! I will also message you on ebay with photos so you can verify.
Try flipping the adapter upside down and make sure to align the white arrow on the adapter with the missing pin on the motherboard connector.

Sorry the 7010 SFF is not compatible with any of our kits for various reasons. Some have slightly different connectors or they're located in areas of the board that block the adapter from being connected like a large capacitor or the CMOS battery.

Check the power button blink codes on Dell's website, as for the USB error there is possibly a detect pin that is not grounded due to the front panel connector not being attached. We don't currently have an adapter that will fix that issue at the moment but we'll keep it in mind for the future.
@@HarbinRepairs, would your USB adapter get rid of the POST error at least? The only thing I found out at Dell's website was the blinking amber power led light error. My power led blinks white color only with no beeps at all.

You'll need to reuse the original rear fan or you can try the rear fan adapter linked in the description however that might not work depending on the fan you choose.

1:08 how come you did not plug in the reset switch anywhere? Is it optional to plug in the reset switch and the diagnostic LEDs?
There is not a reset switch on the original front panel of the Optiplex desktops. The diagnostic LED's/HDD LED adapter is optional however without that adapter plugged in you will still get the annoying front panel error on startup.
@@HarbinRepairs yeah I bought the three pack kit on eBay but my PC case does not come with the diagnostic LED's though so will that be okay?
@@Tnguyen6163 The HDD LED connector will work and front panel error will be removed when plugged in, If your original case did not have diagnostic LED's then they won't light up which is normal.

SFF would require a completely different adapter depending on the model since Dell has those connectors in weird different locations on each model. We might design one in the future but as of right now we don't have a solution for those.

Make sure you have PCIE power plugged into the card, check out Linus Tech Tip's channel. They have a forum dedicated to helping people build PC's.
@@HarbinRepairs I did and the fan of the graphics card turns on. It spins and the graphics card feels hot. And I plugged the 8 pin PCI-E cable. Could it be the graphics card or motherboard what do you think? What else you recommend me to do? It doesn't register
