unfortunately they edited out the 'Bone-Crunching" sound that accompanied it as the BBC thought that was going 'too far'- but it was left uncensored on the DVD version
My dad was in the British Army during the War - I'm old and my parents were quite old when I was born - and one day he was home on leave, and he took my mum out on a date, to the cinema. Halfway through the film, the air raid siren sounded and everyone got up and quietly, calmly walked out towards the nearest bomb shelter, just like the people in the club. Not my dad. He went up to the ticket office and asked for his money back. "Are you blinkin' joking?" was, I believe, the polite way of saying what the manager told him. I'm not sure if I've commented before but I'm really enjoying your reactions. "That's weird" - yes, welcome to the world of Steven Moffat!
I'd say there's a few classic who Doctors with Fashion especially the concept of Accessorize. 5th Doctors Celery, 4th Doctors scarf, 7th Doctors question mark umbrella to match his question mark jumper.
Fashion is matched with confidence. A man who dresses like that is not afraid of anyone or anything. I guarantee that the TARDIS chose to put the wardrobe in the very next room herself.@@MightyJonE
"Are you my mummy?" Gosh, that episode surprised the hell out of me when I first watched it. I'm not a big fan of horror and, at the time, I didn't knew Doctor Who could be an horror type of show and I was so impressed with this 2 parter! Loved your reaction and how you went to super confused to understanding basically everything in the end. Doctor Who does this a lot. Thank you for another Emme Who tuesday! I'm very excited for not only the conclusion of this one, but everything else this and the next season has to offer! I'm very confident you will love it!
Welcome to the works of Steven Moffat, making ordinary objects terrifying since 2005. Captain Jack Harkness is a good guy (and a very popular DW character), but he does like to flirt. Which is, of course, part if his appeal.
I used to joke that Moffat had a bunch of nouns in one hat and adjectives in the other hat and he'd just randomly draw and pair them up. They ended up with "gassy" twice, so one turned into "gaseous" and one turned into flatulence 😂
TBF in the original series a single story would typically last a few episodes, usually 4-6, and end each with a cliffhanger (including the story's finale in the earliest seasons). Single episode stories were very rare, Mission to the Unknown may even be the only one, but there were even a few much longer ones, like The War Games (10 episodes) or Dalek Master Plan (12 episodes).
Forgot this was a two-parter. I was ready this time for the heartbreak of the climax, but now have to wait 'til your next reaction is up. Good ole wacky John Barrowman (who most people recognize as the villain from Arrow) is a welcome sight in such a nostalgic context. The effect of people's transformations into the masks is low-fi (by 2024 visual comparison) but still bone-chilling.
Jack is sort of the Doctor Who equivilent of Han Solo crossed with James Kirk. EDIT INCLUDES SPOILERS FOR NEXT EPISODE, I KNOW EMME IS UP TO SEASON 2, BUT IF YOU'RE WATCHING ALONG WITH HER HERE ON RUclips DO NOT CLICK MORE 4:56 Is no one else gonna mention Emme instantly guessing the twist?
When I saw the episode title I thought to myself I think this is my favorite episode of the first season but wasn't sure exactly why but how could I forget it's the episode we meet Captain Jack!
One of my favorite things about Emme is when she sticks by the characters she likes. For example R2D2. Something doesn't just happen to R2. It happens to "Us"
The title The Empty Child is meant to be evocative of the first ever Doctor Who episode An Unearthly Child (although they refer to very different things). I also noticed here that the Doctor says "Puddings for all!" which is perhaps a nod to the Seventh Doctor famously mocking the grandiose designs of a classic villain as "Crush the lesser races! Conquer the Galaxy! Unlimited Rice Pudding!"
Ah yes. Lots of terrible enemies, lots of scary monsters, but a little boy in a gas mask becomes one of the most disturbing of them all. And you've met Jack Harkness. Quite the character, on and off the screen. I also liked the actor on the TV series 'Arrow' as Malcolm Merlyn.
This is one of those episodes that sticks with you. I think everyone forgets a few episodes, but The Empty Child ... Are you my mummy??? and the gas mask... Such a good ep. And Capt Jack is pretty OK. :)
Fun tidbit: if you listen closely to the part where Dr.Constantine drops the bombshell that the patients are not dead you hear a literal bombshell being dropped and exploding in the distance during the war behind the The Doctor that the same time he makes the realization.
This episode was creepy! The Doctor is over 900 years old. And Rose held on a lot longer than most humans, I think... unless she had a knot to stand on. A great episode!
This came out when I was 5 and I remember this used to give me nightmares especially when the gas mask grew out of doctor Constantine face it was haunting.
This was my first experience with NuWho. I walked in on my brother watching it as Rose was dangling from the rope, and I have been watching ever since.
The two parter that finally made my younger self a Whovian! Say what you will about Steven Moffat's tenure as showrunner but he really gave us some fantastic episodes like this during the Russell T. Davis era. Side note, "The Empty Child" episode title evokes "An Unearthly Child", the first ever episode of Doctor Who that premiered back in 1963
Yeah, definitely NOT a time and place you want to visit. 😱 You nailed it with rouge time traveler. You’ll see him in the continuation, he will grow on you. He’s a conman with a good heart. He loves everyone, I do mean everyone. 😎
Britain had food rationing during WW2, if you stole someone’s meal that might be all the food that they had saved up for the week. It wasn’t just a matter of having the money to buy food, everyone had a book of ration coupons issued to them. The homeless kids might justify it to themselves by saying the food was bought on the black market, but if they are doing it night after night not every family they steal from will be.
I absolutely loved when you made a guess in this red, I mean visitors in the video sorry I have to use voice to text as I’m crippled great video and love the introduction of Captain Jack my spirit animal, the dirty fucker
Easily the best story (both parts) in this first season, for me. What I love is how you've basically already been given all the pieces of the puzzle to figure out what's happened.
Captain Jack is a fan favorite character. So popular that he ultimately gets his own spin-off series. He’s horny & flirty AF, but is a hero at heart. IMO, he’s one of the best additions to the canon made by the revival series.
Hi Emme! I don't even have an account there, but I did see on your patreon that you will be doing less movie reactions (which means more Doctor Who Saturdays; I'm not complaining!) and that one of the movies you do plan to react to is Back to the Future, which I am very excited about. Here's a little warning: An early episode of Series 3 of Doctor Who has a somewhat spoilery mention of that movie. If you were not going to do so anyway, you might want to consider filming your BttF (Part I) reaction before you get there - or at least know this is coming. (It's not gonna ruin the entire movie for you, I should think.) Anyway, thank you for your reactions, I love to see them!
I first watched this episode when I was 8 & hid behind my couch bc I was terrified of this little boy lmao. Not gonna lie, I still get creeper out now so I always skip this episode on rewatches

We have started season 2 over on patreon! 🎉 patreon.com/emmereacts
Hopefully you got/get a chance to watch at least one classic episode from late Third Doctor or early Fourth Doctor before the episode School Reunion!

Omg omg i can't wait for the start of s5 😅 anyway I'm here for the ride 😊

GREAT! Say hello to The Face of Boe for me :)
Does this mean that you're beyond season 2 with what you've watched?
“Is this guy a friend or a foe?” Yes.

First Hugo award win for Nu Who, my personal favorite story from season 1.
Great horror story, and of course the awesomeness of Captain Jack Harkness!

This two-parter remains one of my all-time favorite Doctor Who stories, it's brilliant.

this is the double episode, where doctor who gets really good.
It was explained in the episode that Captain Jack Harkness is from the 51st century in the future which is why he has advanced technology.
“Are you my mummy?”
Probably among the creepiest and foreboding lines in Doctor Who.
