25:10 "Don't you think she looks tired"
This is a very niche reference to a particular event in British history so it can go over a lot of viewer's heads. Margaret Thatcher, the first female British Prime Minister was very unpopular (to be polite!) When she was in the role. What eventually took her down was an aide of hers saying those exact words, not realising his mic was on.
It led to speculation she was unfit to lead and eventually she was challenged for the role of leadership and lost the vote.

    • @IslesYankeeLady
      @IslesYankeeLady 3 месяца назад

For Americans, (like me) she led from 1979-1990, so part of Carter’s term, all of Reagan’s 2, and slightly after. She was very arguably worse than Reagan. They both blatantly ignored the AIDS epidemic, and their financial policies hurt far too many people. They were supported by the wealthy in both cases. I know people don’t like to talk politics, but Doctor Who is a very left leaning show, so we’ll get these obvious opinions. 🤷‍♀️

The "Don't you think she looks tired?" phrase was actually the same phrase used in real life to refer to Margaret Thatcher at the end of her time as Prime Minister. The 'health concerns' rumours.

This episode genuinely shows how great of an actor David Tennant is. An episode following the regeneration is the first real look at the new Doctor, and gives them an entire episode to convince the audience to stay. In the classics, youd get a 4-6 part story for the new doctor to establish themselves. Full episode in the modern series. David only gets that short stint on the Sycorax ship, stays in bed for most of his screentime, and he chews up the scenery the moment he gets the chance.
Bro managed in 5 minutes what takes 1-4 episodes for any other doctor to pull off.

Unclear if that means the whole Hitchhiker's universe is the same universe as the one in Doctor Who, or if Arthur just went on somewhat similar adventures and Douglas Adams based his book on Arthur's account of his adventures. Heck, he could've even have been an unseen past companion and maybe Ford or someone could be loosely based on a second-hand account of the Doctor. If I remember right Adams did write for Doctor Who in the past so it doesn't feel entirely outside the realms of possibility

  • @ronfehr7899

I think Rose's speech to the Sycorax was just something that she made up on the spot, using words or phrases she remembered from her travels with the Doctor. Her reference to Article 15 of the Shadow Proclamation was from the very first episode, Rose, when the Doctor is addressing the Nestene Consciousness. Raxicoricofalipritorious was the planet where the Slitheen family was from.

It was also a codeword used on labels on video recordings of the new Doctor Who episodes when they were passed around to reduce the possibility of someone getting their hands on one before it was aired.
There is a lot of secrecy in Doctor Who about new companions or the return of major past characters so anagrams were often used when cast lists were produced for publication in the Radio Times etc. One character auditioning for Doctor Who was apparently told to say she was here for a new show called "Panic Moon" - an anagram of "Companion".

"Who's clothes are these?" - First, that was an unintentional pun, because yes, they are Doctor Who's clothes. But the Doctor and his companions travel to many planets and many different time periods, so they need a big wardrobe to handle any contingency. The control room you enter from the front door, which we see most of the time, is bigger on the inside than the blue police box. But the rest of the TARDIS that we sometimes see, like this episode, is MUCH bigger than that. There are also bedrooms, bathrooms, a library, and many other parts. We only get to see the other parts of the ship when necessary for plot reasons, but they are there.

The Doctor deposing Harriet Jones at the end draws some debate among fans about whether he was justified. My guess is that it's meant to be an ambiguous moment. In the episode, it comes right after "No second chances. I'm that sort of a man." We're happy about that with the Sycorax leader, but then right away he doesn't give Harriet Jones a second chance either, and we're not so sure. The Doctor's more complex (and thus more interesting) than just a hero in a white hat, there's also a darkness there that we sometimes glimpse.

The "Don't you think she looks tired" bit is a British media idiom. The rules of the British Parliament don't allow MP's to say certain things to each other, one of which is accusing each other of being drunk. The standard euphemism is "tired," or possibly "tired and emotional" or "tired and overwrought," which has also spread to the media when talking about political figures. So the Doctor is suggesting that she looks drunk (which she kind of does in her reaction).

Note with Sycorax the name comes from
    Shakespeare… (remember that 😉)
Penelope Wilton (Harriet Jones) has a great career, probably best known as Cousin Isabelle on Downton Abbey, Daniel Evans who played Daniel Llewellyn is an accomplished musical theatre actor too. I’ve seen him on Broadway in the revival of Sunday in the Park with George. This would have been the year before I think. Adam Garcia also has a fun role in “Coyote Ugly,” and a long resume. He plays the right-hand man, Alex. Sally (Anita Breim,) is Jane Seymour on the Tudors.
A lot of nuWho locations are in Cardiff, Wales. “Boom Town” has locations that are right on the water that will also feature later, 🤫. I think the apartment buildings they’re climbing up are pretty close. There used to be a Museum there that housed a lot of costumes, props, 9/10’s TARDIS set, and other cool stuff, but it’s closed sadly. I think the parking lot where Rose spots the prominent “Bad Wolf” is there too. I’ve been to Roald Dahl Plass, and the Museum. 🥰 I also ate in the restaurant in Boom Town.
David went to drama school- would have learned sword then. 😊
I always considered the Shadow Proclamation to be part high council of the Jedi and part bumbling Senate.
If you want to, look back at past Doctor’s costumes and play spot the easter egg in the closet scene. We’re meant to recognize at least several prominent accessories, depending on how good your eye is. David grew up quite the Whovian, so I bet filming that scene was brilliant.

    Congratulations on 50k!
The first few Christmas Specials are basically just normal episodes, set at Christmas, with a little bit of Christmas iconography thrown in. There are better ones to come that embrace the Christmas spirit better, but this one is probably the best one of the Tennant era.

David really is my Doctor. He's really able to cover a lot of the emotional range that I want from The Doctor. Eccleston was good, but Tennant is... so much better. I know you're going to enjoy the next few seasons!

This is technically the second christmas episode of New Who since the episode with Charles Dickens was also set at christmas.
Also The Doctor's reaction to Harriet's reasoning is a little elitist in a way cause she is right like The Doctor isnt always around so the planet needs to defend themselves against alien threats and be capable of doing so in the absence of Doctor. Its almost like The Doctor doesnt want the human race defending themselves without him or perhaps to find a better way but as we've seen with the Doctor he offers the chance to leave before having to stop them and i suppose thats the difference.
The Doctor also robs the country of the golden age the 9th Doctor talked about in the slitheen two parter

Loving watching someone new fall in love with DW. As you must be thundering through Series 2 now (very broke so no Patreon for me sadly), you must be noticing Torchwood pop up. The first series of the spinoff Torchwood, aired just after Series 2. It's not essential viewing by any means, but I think you might get something out of watching it... There are more spinoffs but let's not spoil those yet. 😜

Just to clarify. Blood type is inherited from biological parents, and the ABO genes and Rh factors come from both parents. There are many possible combinations, so a baby may have the blood type and Rh factor of either parent, or a combination of both parents. For example, parents who both have Type O will always pass on their own blood type, but parents who both have Type B can have a child with either Type O or B. A combination of Type A and Type B can lead to any blood type.

FWIW, the chance of neither Rose, Jackie, nor Mickey being affected by the phenomenon affecting ⅓ of the world if each was calculated independently (i.e. not related to blood type or any other dependent variable) is about 30%. It's the equivalent of the chance of throwing three six-sided dice (3d6) and having none of them be a 5 or 6.

Hi Emme!😊 I got a late start, otherwise I would have watched this right away being a HUGE Doctor Who fan! The Christmas specials are a tradition for the modern Doctor Who episodes. For many people DAVIID TENNANT is their favorite modern Doctor Who. I think many, especially the younger generation prefer MATT SMITH, as he is the youngest Doctor Who ever. ROSE is still one of my top companions in the modern series. KAREN GILLAN (Guardians of the Galaxy, Jumanji films) is another. She got her big start here.🤯 David Tennant had the longest adjustment after his regeneration as The Doctor on screen.😉 Sometimes logic escapes the Doctor Who series, you just have to go with it.😉 Like you brought up about the blood types. Woohoo!!!! 50K subscribers!!!🥳🥳🎉🎉🎈🎈🎊🎊 Congratulations Emme!😊 You'll hit 100K in no time! Great reactions to David Tennant's solo premiere in this Christmas special, Emme!!!🎬👏👏👏👏 Harriet Jones! What was she thinking?

There is indeed a Christams Special every years. Im not British but it seems since its revival in 2005 it became sort of a British tradition to sit down and watch the Doctor Who special that aired on Christmas day. Truthfully i used to actually pirate the episodes and watch them late on Christmas too, since i couldnt get the BBC anyother way back then. They also all take place on Christmas and are Christmas theamed ofcourse.

Doctor Who never really had much of a Christmas connection in the old days, but with Nu-Who, it's had about 12 Christmas episodes. I wouldn't say any of them are all-time classics, but they're generally pretty fun... which is good, since (as this episode establishes) they're all canon, so you gotta watch them...

Back in the '70s we used to get an "omnibus edition" of a previously aired story, shown at Christmas. They would pick a story that had been popular, join all the parts together and edit it down to make a movie-length version with minimal padding.
