I am living in the grief of losing my husband. He had always wanted to give me a new camera and my response has been thank you but it's too expensive, we can't afford it. After his death I purchased the camera and a few lenses. I really wish that I would have let him give me. He would have found happiness 11in seeing what joy and relief I am finding through the lens. Dealing with major health issues and limited mobility even photographing the birds, trees, flowers and my dogs in my own backyard there is much to experience.
Thank you for the peace and encouragement you share through your pictures and videos.

I went out with my camera which I've hardly used to photograph my Dad's favourite loch. I was traumatised watching him die horrifically on my own. It was really healing to be in a place he loved so much and the last place we went together a few weeks before he died. Thank you Kim for your support and love. Your photographs are sensitive and very beautiful

My 95 year old father has been slowly disappearing with dementia, he is likely to pass away in the next few weeks. He is wonderfully looked after in his care home. I had been considering whether to photograph him, his carers, my sister and I; inspired by your video I am going to. Thank you

After watching your video I remembered an article I was working on a while ago for AP magazine…. It’s a couple of minutes read but I must say it definitely resonates with this video Kim …
Does what we see influence what we think, or is it more, what we think, that influences what we see?
I can’t help looking at photos that I’ve taken and conclude that the photos are just a reflection of what I was thinking or maybe how I was feeling at the point I took them. What I can definitely conclude is that photography definitely reflects the way I’m feeling, the place I’m at mentally … For me going out and capturing photos that reflect how I’m feeling definitely helps me to deal with and record where I am as a person in life. Photography isn’t just about ‘taking photos’ it’s much, much more than that… It gets you out, it gives you a little freedom from day to day problems. As soon as I’m out with my camera I feel like the weight of life has been lifted, I feel free for a while, but still the photos I take and come home with just resonate with the way I was feeling before I went out to take them. Photography really can be a form of therapy, a temporary relief, but also a total reflection of the inner you
There are many different things that people do that help them, walking, painting, yoga, swimming etc etc and I get why they do these things, but, photography is definitely the one for me. So, whatever camera you own, whatever lenses and other photographic equipment you have, just get out there, enjoy every second, you don’t have to be the best. Just do it!

You are so right. I just spent weeks going through 20 years of family photos to create a long slideshow to show during Christmas. It is a secret gift to the bigger family. Three of the people in the slideshow are no longer with us, one of whom died from covid and one who collapsed and died during a holiday get together. I am a little worried about sadness some of the photos may generate. The process of putting it together was so rewarding for me and quite moving. Both of my kids are now in college. My daughter just spent the last four months abroad in vet school and will be away for most of the next four years. Thank you for sharing your experiences with us. I think the connections we make through social media really can bring us together.

Beautiful. The soul in photography, that's what I was thinking as I was watching. It's the person behind the camera that communicates themselves; the photos alone would not be able to do that. Thank you, Kim.

A very powerful video Kim - interesting connections. My dad is in the late stages of Parkinson's, and dementia is starting to set in. I really don't know how much time he has left but it doesn't feel like he has long. It is useful to get out with the camera, if only by way of a diversion, if nothing else.
But funnily enough, I've been taking shots of places he used to take us as kids. He was a teacher and had degrees in both geology and biology, and my love of the Highlands stems from what he taught me as a kid (as a teacher, he's probably also responsible for my tendancy to tell other photographers how they should be taking pictures, which annoys even me😂).
But I didn't make the connection of why I might be taking those pictures at this time until this video, so thank you for your insight.

Kim, what a beautiful and touching video. Thank you for posting it. I have shared with you that my husband and I went through many years of caregiving to his Dad and then his Mom. During those years we also needed to assist with my Mother and Pop (step-father) which limited our ability to be away from our home area. It was something we did lovingly and are grateful we were able to have spent most of our lives living close to both sets of parents. Since that journey began we have lost all four parents and their loss has been sad and difficult at times. But through your videos and your musings on how important nature is to us I have found deep comfort. I took a part of those years to try to continue to use my photography to bring me comfort but also to be able to share photos of our farm, our pups, and a variety of subjects to bring comfort to them as well. Sometimes it was just a photo of an old tree in one of our pastures and Charles' dad would tell us a great tale of things that happened around that old tree. Or a photo of a beautiful scene at the creek once triggered a memory of his Moms. She shared that spot in the creek was a place where baptisms were held for a nearby church. Had I not shared that photo we never would have known the history there. Sometimes the photos brought funny stories, sometimes sad, and sometimes just a brief smile and a nod that they let us know they remembered something. but maybe could no longer share with us except by holding my hand and giving it a faint squeeze. I am forever grateful for photography and what it brings to my life. Grief is not easy nor does it end... it's a journey with ups and downs but I find photography to be a wonderful way to walk that path and to bring others into the journey with us that we might help each other move forward to better days. I feel you are on a journey now Kim that enables you to bring peace to many. I believe that following your heart to do what you feel will benefit not just you but so many others as you make your way down this new path of creativity. May it be so! Peace, Hope, Joy & Love, Donna

Hi Kim! I can fully relate to some of the comments you made in your video eg when you talk about how things will again become brighter. My mum died three days before Christmas last year. My mum lost her sight about twenty years ago. In the Autumn of last year she fell and broke her hip. She was kept in hospital for three months and all she had wanted all that time was to get home to her own bed. I told her that the 21st of December was the shortest day and from the 22nd things would become brighter. I believe that on that day she went to heaven and things would be for her brighter and free from pain. I offer my condolences for the loss of your Granny, Kim, she obviously had a very special granddaughter in you. Best wishes, Kim!

I was just recommending to my photo teacher last semester that the photo program should be aware that a lot of the students, young and older, use photography as a therapy, and that the professors should be aware of ways to support the students. We had a teacher who talked openly about mental health and offered support, and that made a huge difference in the class. This video could be a useful tool for the teachers, I think.

    Hi Kim.
Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts on nature, photography and its power to help with troubled times in life.
It moved me to tears, as for the last 4 years, I am dealing with Altheimer's wife and now in need of kind words from friends.
It is a journey of many lows and little highs. Your words, spoken from the heart was what I needed.
I often found my photography in nature was a time of healing for me. But for 2 years now, have had limited time. Enjoying your "Photographic Connections" Channel.
    Take care Kim.

One personal reflection, if you will permit me. When you showed the picture of you and the tree, I immediately thought of "Grandmother Willow" from my eldest daughter's favourite childhood film, 'Pocahontas'. Her advice to her granddaughter was always "follow your heart!" Take care. Andrew

Wow, what a beautiful video, thank you.
I’m fairly new to photography and started a few months ago. I came to it really as I explore my new interest in nature connection via a Shamanic group I’ve joined.
One of the facilitators of the group is a truly amazing wildlife photographer of 50 years standing. He works with nature to create stunning work and through his example and support I started to explore this world too.
I just wish I’d started sooner than leaving it till I turned 62 😊
I sometimes wonder if you too are interested in the Shamanic path with all its synchronicities and mystery.
Thank you again Kim for some truly inspirational work 🙏

This is such a beautiful, sensitive video. It helped me so much as my mum passed away just over two years ago and I am feeling a lot of grief that I thought had passed. I have a photo that always brings me back to the time of her passing, it was a stunning sunset which seemed so significant when such a beautiful light in this world was passing on. I have re-connected with that image and that emotion as I watched this video. I really appreciate that you shared this video with us. I hope it has brought you another little bit of healing and strength too. I think your granny was sending you love through that little feather.

My mother had passed away this past July. This video brings back both sad and fond memories. She passed away a couple of weeks after our US July 4th holiday. I remember one of the things that helped buoy my emotions during the last few months of helping care for her - and those last couple of weeks especially - was getting out and photographing fireworks and the night sky. For me, night sky photography has always been an uplifting and serene - and sometimes frustrating 😜- experience. But spending time out at night, with the stars and planets and galaxies, helped to keep me grounded (the irony)... and calm... and patient... through that challenging time. Thanks for the wonderful video!

Through the lens we see a world, both bitter and sweet,
capturing special moments, where sorrow and beauty meet.
In the quiet of the wood and in nature's sweet embrace,
we try to find solace, through her gentle healing grace.
Loss is like a shadow, ever present and ever stark,
like an unknown journey, through a forest in the dark.
Loss weaves through life, like a thread that's unseen,
like realizing a beloved pet, has dreamt its last dream.
Past photographs are a silent testament of the soul,
where Nature can fill, an empty, aching hole.
In these frames where emotions, are raw and untold,
revealing truths of ourselves, in every shadow and every fold.
Alone in the forest, but still feeling the sun?
Its when you realize, a new chapter has just begun.
Through the lens is a journey, from darkness to dawn,
its a tale of healing and new days are reborn.
Our images reveal our memories, like a bridge to the light,
from heartache’s deep winter, to spring’s gentle sight.
In nature's solace, the past finds its peace,
guiding us to a future where joy should never cease.

Lovely images and interesting associations. Our family had a double loss in 2015 only months apart, unfortunately it destroyed my urge to take photographs which I had done for a large part of my life. I struggled, I didn’t seek help which was a mistake even when friends and family told me that’s what I should do.
Nature is a great healer and it’s the only time I find peace now, the Sea is especially healing I find. I enjoy nature but I don’t have the urge to capture it, I soak it up and just enjoy the moment.

In order to completely flip the loss page, you need to realize that loss occurs in the physical plane. And in the spiritual sense you will never get up with your grandmother. And maybe you should go to Kenya to understand. And take real elephants, including. I wonder what it can do in the future. You're very deep and mature for your years. I think. what could send people to the inner transformation push away from the photo. Success you. And finding harmony in life...
