Hi Kim, So many lovely points came across in your video and they really got me thinking in a positive way. I have always loved landscape photography, for many decades, but I was so critical of my own work and comparing it the works of other photographers, I became so disenchanted with my own abilities. I'm 70 now and retired just over a year ago with pre-type 2 diabetes and awful mental health issues. The saving grace was getting out into the country, walking, breathing fresh air and, with my camera with me, starting to take the photographs that gave me the greatest satisfaction. None would win a prize, but I feel more at peace with myself and more in touch with what I see; it is a beautiful and comforting feeling. It can be too easy to forget just how beautiful our world is. Thank you Kim for your lovely and peaceful video.
Most landscape photography and likely most genres of photography RUclips channels speak to the audience that watches them from the perspective of what's commercially viable to sell photos (prints) or calendars, or submit photos for competitions or for an exhibition... but almost all the people that own cameras that take photos aren't ever going to be professionals making money from photography. They do it as a hobby that makes them happy and keeps them intellectually and creatively challenged.

I’ve been taking photographs for many years now and I would call myself, a general photographer. I even had my own website with a lot of different categories in it. For example; Wildlife and Pets, Landscapes, Seascapes, Flowers and Trees, Buildings, People and Varied because I didn’t have a pigeon hole to put them in. I showed the website to several photographers, some even on RUclips and their remarks were pretty much the same: Where are you going with this? What are you trying to achieve? Why not specialise in one thing because you are confusing the people who are looking at the work on your website. Stick to one thing.
Well, this criticism set me back somewhat to the fact that I hardly picked up the camera or went out because I didn’t know what I wanted. Did I want to please myself as I had been doing or please the photographers on the various sites because it’s what they do?
You’ll be pleased to know, I opted to please myself.
So, finally it’s great that someone, as in YOU, sees the world around us as I do. I go out with no expectations of actually shooting anything because it’s a bonus for you if you do capture something. It’s great just to get out. Your excellent video was just what I needed to confirm my own beliefs and hopefully many others. Thank you so much.

I had felt like I was getting nowhere with my photographic journey awhile back (spending too much time worrying about what others were doing or what was popular) and went back to just taking the camera and making photos exclusively for me. I also decided to go back to keeping a sketchbook again after a long dry spell of about 20 years and for me, this too is a beginner project. But both have their own challenges and rewards. Always nice to see some work from you, Kim.
One thing I notice is that many YT vloggers, especially landscape photographers, take a shot and then pack the gear. Well, a beginner wouldn't tuck his camera away. You might spot something worthy of giving it a try at any step/moment. But maybe it's my habit, I love documentary photography, but I often go out for a walk in my neighbourhood to hone my general skills and to add a fresh shot every day. Currently we've got ice fishers, snow-covered ground, water bodies slowly giving in to a thaw, winter clothing in the street and what not. A plenty of subjects and scenes. All of this deserves giving it a try,

I have done the same thing when I've gone out with a camera. Left the gear bag in the car or at home and worked with the camera I have in my hand. Not worried about settings or rules just shot. Not gun and run style, just looked for that something without any preconceived notions or ideas. Love the images you posted with this, that sense of abstract that captured the moment, that says a great deal or nothing at all. And as a Buddhist would tell you. There is no such thing as nothing. Nothing is something, it is nothing. I think at times photographers get to caught up with creating that "perfect" image which can be a bit of a negative trap. So yes I agree with you that we should look at the world the way a child might look at the world.

I'm a subpar photographer, and pretty much gave up entirely for a while, except for iPhone snapshots (I've purchased and sold DSLRs and mirrorless). But recently I became interested again, and I bought a proper camera late last year. Between traveling and the holidays I still haven't gotten out much, but my intention matches up nicely with the subject of this video. Instead of worrying too much about settings, modes, etc., I'm just going to get out and make pictures and see what happens. Thanks for the inspiration (and validation!).

When you let go of what others think of your photography it gives you the freedom to be yourself through the photography to live your life and values not through the prism of others.

Wonderful video Kim, it is true you do become almost a slave to conventions. I recall being out with my daughter a few years back photographing a cascade in Weardale. I was looking up stream and setting the camera up on the tripod about to take a nice but predictable shot. Turning round my daughter was pointing her camera downstream into the sun with no tripod. No prizes for guessing her shot was much better than mine! Anyway I am off up to my daughters this weekend in Aberdeenshire so will be channeling my beginners mindset👌👌👍👍

Good advice for beginners to just photograph what they fancy and don't try to replicate image's that other photographers take all the time.

Really enjoyed your video. It is good, and therapeutic, to go back to basics. Having just bought a point and shoot camera for travel photography,after carrying bulky gear for 40 years it has been very satisfying to have the simplicity of just taking a photo that appeals. Worth trying.

I love your message! I’ve been shooting for years and a few years ago I decided that I just want to shoot what calls to me, experiment with it all. My favorite way to shoot is creating ICM. I don’t have an end game with my imagery, if I capture something neat and can edit it, I’m stoked, if not, I don’t worry about it. ICM and OOF imagery is so fun. Playing with photography is such a wonderful outlet, finding the beauty within the chaos is my motto, when you slow down and observe your surroundings you’ll be able to see the beauty that truly surrounds us all. Thank you for this video, it is encouraging to me to know that there are other photogs out there that aren’t afraid to let go of the constraints that are thrust upon us and PLAY, let go of the nonsense control structures and embrace the process of play. 💜💜💜
Yet another wonderfully inspiring Video, Kim!! Full of simple wisdom that we all need to hear, or be reminded of (that doesn't just apply to photography). Yet you manage to do it in such a calm and beautiful way, that not only does it make me fall in love with taking images again, but you also take away any stress of the day. I love using cheap second hand gear. For me it's being there and hopefully capturing the moment be it digital or film.

This is one of the best videos of creative nature photography I have seen. I am still a beginner (2yrs) but lately I have noticed a sort of judgement in me when I go out for a photowalk, about what is worthy of photographing and what is not. There is a huge blizzard outside as I'm watching this. I don't want to brave the weather as it is now, but as soon as it's over I will go out and try your mindset, Kim, to see if I can think like a beginner. I actually feel like a beginner everytime I go out. So much to learn from the playing with light and shade.
I do this now for 6 months and I can say that it brings me more joy than ever.
Thanks for that one Kim, you have made me feel a lot better about my level of photography, it has truly inspired me to just get out there and now try to be a photographer that I am not.

Hello Kim. I have only recently discovered your channel and I am thoroughly enjoying your connection with nature and photography. So much so, you have inspired me to start a project based around woodlands. I dont know how to plan this but I love the connection with nature and well being and I hope that by making more of a connection with nature and my surroundings will encourage me to be more creative with my photography.

The wonderland of winter looked spectacular in Scotland up north. My home area in southern Scotland is missing the heavy frost at the moment, so it looks like i have to wait until the frost arrives in south Scotland before i get the camera out for the winter scenes. Great images of the winter wonderland in Scotland Kim. I like using the old sunny sixteen rule at times for my shots when the sun is shining. It's as good a set up for taking images as any if the light is in your favour. Basics is best i say, keep it simple & enjoy the moment!

I like solitude and nature. There is so much bad news and usually a comment talks about mental health. Kim, the path your on, is helping me, and I know others. Ive always photographed whatever catches my eye. Never comfined myself to a certain genre. You've some lovely icm photos there Kim. Will try some myself. Have never tried it.

i think your on two journeys Kim one spiritual and one on photography and art no one said you have to take picture this way or that your the artist Kim your looking for a new way that's all many have gone before you its a art form you adapt to your mood your feelings i think your work was great your an excellent photographer use what ever talks to you that is the way of art.......
I wonder if that is not a natural progression. First, snapping photos of whatever catches your eye. That gets you excited about doing more and being better so the technical stuff comes in. After a while though, as you get better and better, you get bored with that part of it and just want to have fun again so you go back to taking images you think are cool. The difference of course is that now you are a LOT better at making something out of those scenes.

I think I still take pictures of anything that looks good. I take those for me, just for my own fun. Photography is still fun for me. That's why I don't think I'll ever be a professional. Edit: Painting With Light, that's what I was going to name my future business when I took the Business Photo class. I guess I really take that to heart.
