My first QFG game was part 2, and I always loved them all. Sierra brought a lot of happiness to what was a dark and lonely childhood. All these years later it brings me comfort to watch videos of all the games I used to play. Reading all the comments makes me smile, and I wonder where the hell all of you were when I was growing up😂. Glad you guys are here now.
For me, I was busy trying to beat the monsters that only came out at night in Quest for Glory 1 VGA. Getting frightened as a kid when I wandered into the town cemetery at night with all the ghosts up and about. I completely froze and didn't dare to move my character. Watching the game slow to a slideshow speed during the bandit stronghold areas because my PC was only a 286 at the time. 😂
The mid to late 90s was one of the darkest times for video games. That first gen 3D where everything looked like ugly triangles, and even though 2D sprites still looked way better, every developer was obsessed with rushing into 3D regardless of whether it looked worse. Out of that entire trend, nothing hurt more than seeing what they did to Quest for Glory 5 :(
This is my favorite in the series as well, I got it when it came out on 3.5" floppy disks and eagerly imported my hero from QG1, 2, and 3 as a Paladin. Then fired it up on my 486 DX33 PC. The game left such a lasting impression on me and I liked the character of Katrina and the name so much that I named my first born daughter Katrina. All the backstory with Piotyr and Erana, the bravery and sacrifice, were truly inspiring when I was younger. I love the gothic setting and bringing back Ad Avis from QG2 was so cool.
Hey there. Really fun to see all of us thoroughly appreciating this series (of which 4 is my fav) all these years later. I actually just did a playthrough a couple weeks ago; holds up superbly! I would say though, in regards to the gypsy talk -- I don't really find it awkward? Stereotypes and prejudice exist, and to completely act like they don't exist in any of the media we have? The townspeople were shown to be [mostly] wrong...aside from the 'werewolf' part (lol), and the point was emphasized even up into the ending of the game. Have you ever played the QG2 VGA remake? I'm playing that for the first time, and would be curious to hear your thoughts!
One of my favorite Sierra games growing up and my favorite QFG game. The John Rhys Davies narration is SOO great. I actually read he was quoted as saying it was the "cd rom from hell" because of the sheer amount of dialogue he had to record. But honestly that was my favorite part of the game haha. Great review!
This was the dark and gothic game of the series. I played it as a kid and loved it. It was so glitchy then. Now that I am a single parent with sole custody of a 12 year old, I get to raise him to love these games. I love them so much. They take me back to when my dad would sit and play these games with me. The QFG series (VGA) will always hold a place in my heart ❤️amazing job on the review. Love your videos friend. QFG4 is definitely the best of the QFG series. For sure. It feels like you’re playing a game set in the beauty and the beast time period. It’s gorgeous.
This series in one of my alltime favorites. I loved each one of these, but this fourth one might be my favorite. The amount of puns and references in this are hilarious. I mean, even "Dr. Cranium", who makes you do weird puzzles. Sierra, we know about Dr. Brain, you don't have to shout. :D Also, can I just say that the overarching story about Erana that encompasses all games from one to five is kinda awesome. I really hope you do a video like this from all of the games.
@@Cannotbetamed1 Yeah, I watched that. I watched quite a few of your vids since I just found your channel. And I have to admit I fell in love with your content. You definitely earned your sub with this, Loom and Dig videos especially. Trial by Fire could be a little off-putting for new players nowadays becaus of the parser interface and no VGA remake, but the rest of the series are games that I'd recommend even today. I'm really looking forward to watching more of your vids. Thank you for making them!
Thief with some magic was my preference, too. This wasn't the first game I played, but it was the first one I played where I got completely lost in the Slavic, Lovecraftian world. Thanks for this retrospective.
What really amazed me about Hero's Quest/QFG 4 was how it was a return to the signature zaniness of 1 and 2 (after 3 seemed to lose the plot a bit) but also got you so emotionally involved and caring about the characters you interacted with. The amount of world building that went into a relatively small area was also a welcome throwback to the first game. I was kind of surprised that everyone suddenly claimed to care so much about Igor as soon as he went missing. Was he really such an esteemed member of the community? Sure seemed to me like they were all just dogpiling onto an opportunity to go on a witch hunt for fun.
3 sort of lost the plot because it wasn’t a planned entry from the start. The Cole’s were big table top players and thought the hero wasn’t strong enough for the Mordavia setting yet so they added the 3rd game.
Fav game in the qfg series! I had so much fun with this one, gameplay is still very advanced, letting you go about things in different ways based on your class, like how the rogue climbs the town walk, wizard levitates. Combat is fairly unique, voice acting is top notch and hilarious, so classic ❤️
Such a good game, this was also my introduction to the series and i cant help but come back every couple of years to play the entire series just to re experience this game XD
3 is my favorite as well. I felt like it offered the most interesting setting, conflicts, and NPCs in the series. I also like how it didn't start you off feeling alone as the hero just wandering around and talking to characters that largely stayed in one spot and instead had Rakeesh initially talk to you as he guides you through Tarna, grants you an audience with King Rajah, and tours you through Fricana. There were just lots of little touches like this that made the world feel more dynamic and alive to me than the other QFG games.
I love your PC game reviews. I was strictly a console kid in the 80s/90s, so it’s really interesting to learn about these. And still makes me nostalgic for those times, even though I didn’t play them!
Great showcase and review! I missed out on a lot of games on PC growing up. The rotoscoped graphics remind me of Flashback and Out of this World. Thank you for taking us, the viewers, on this adventure with you Pam!
Hey Pam! Hope you are having a good new year. I’ve never heard of this one but I miss Sierra. I was a Space Quest fan. Those games were SO funny, like Douglas Adams’ books turned into video games. Looking forward to watching your review now :)
Thanks for the great review! It surelly brought me down the memory lane! Just a tiny correction: The rest times are not only used to pass time but to refill a bit of health, mana and stamina. I used it often while training in the forest. So, not totally useless...
This is such an excellent review! The entire video is well edited and filled to the brim with fantastic information. It's a wonder to see the start of specific VOs as well as other involved top tier VAs. Also, your make up is absolutely amazing! Honestly curious how it was done.
the 'gypsies' thing just makes the whole thing feel more real. real people in small towns have their prejudices. I would keep it as it is even if it were made today.
Oooh wow! I totally missed Quest for Glory IV! It looks awesome!!. This thing you mention in 6:36 about being able to play as a class (pala) that isn't even selectable from the get-go if you've played the previous game and that you have ways to get by obstacles that are specific to that class is just mindblowingly awesome! Your class matters, the time of day matter, this is insane! (And that combat music bit you played had me playing air-guitar) I'm absolutely going to play this one this year! a Fantastic review! (By the way, you were curious about my take on Gamedec as I recall (I know you didn't love it). Well the video's out now, check it out if you've nothing better to do. :)
I've never really been into point and click. I just don't have the patience. But your videos are always entertaining so I will watch and like whatever vid you put out to help support the channel. Cheers!
Being a little older, nostalgia forces me to love the first and second games the best, but i remember thinking the graphics in 4 were amazing and i love the music. My teenager self couldn't help continuously visiting the lady in the lake. Definitely died there a "few" times.....
4:50 making a map is a great suggestion, but the weird thing is that i know EXACTLY where you are in every forest screen you show...guess i played that game a lot more than i realized
Awesome choker! Even more awesome video! Every time I see Astalon on sale I think about you! Haven’t bought it yet because I’m too busy spending money on other things these days. But rest assured, I will play it, and it will be because of your recommendation. Have a great Sunday!!
Quest for Glory has been one of my favorite series for decades too. I know exactly what I love about it, but I have never heard it expressed so eloquently or thoroughly. There are moments in the review, like that one instance of mismatched voice acting, that made me go, "Yeah! I remember that!" This feels like a labor of love, of a game that I loved. Thank you for making it. If Quest for Glory 4 had more reviews like this, and less bugs on release, who knows what might have been. I was a Magic User for all five games. The many different occasions magic helped me out in the adventure game parts conditioned me to favor magic characters in games for some 30 years now. Wow. It occasionally felt a little cheap. Need a light? Use a fire or light spell. Need to pick a flower on a cliff? Use the fetch spell. What stuck more clearly in my memory, though, is how Levitate could not move laterally. I had to make use of a rope and someone (?) pulling to get me across a chasm. Or was it a sail? The Coles really tried to create situations where magic had to be used with some thought and not just a hand wavy substitute for lockpicks. Great, great design.
Oh I missed this, glad YT recommended it though. QFG is the most memorable game series from my youth and this one in particular, despite it's many game breaking bugs, is my favorite.
That necklace is really cool and it was interesting to learn about this game. I never got to play the Sierra stuff growing up so I didn't even know they had a version like this with multiple classes and multiple ways to solve problems.
Toby's sacrifice always made me tear up. This game is a masterpiece in general. Very immersive and with a growing sense of urgency as the plot advances.
Loved this, and your cat peering around the corner 😂. This along with the 3rd game were my absolute favorites growing up. They are still the only ones I’ve played.
I spy a kitty cat! Thanks for making these videos, they're really enjoyable, and definitely make me want to dive into these games I didn't play as a kid. Have a great weekend!
This was my favorite Quest for Glory game as well. The forest setting reminded me of the first game, which I liked, but the characters and story were so much better. I also loved all the things you could do with the different classes. I never got around to playing as a magic user, so there are still some things in the game I haven't seen. This was a great review that showcased everything that made this game so wonderful.
As a Quest for Glory fan, I loved the first game the most, specifically the VGA remake. There was just something about the graphics that I liked in that game. It felt very magical to play it, and I still go back to it every now and then just to relive those childhood memories.
This game is so loved that a patch on GOG came out for it that fixes many issues never solved and new content hear and there. Sadly the infamous speech but you mentioned is not corrected do to the fille that is supposed to be there no longer existing.
My friend had this on his PC back when I was young and I remember getting stuck in certain areas not knowing what to do next and having to travel to the pc store to read the guide. Did this multiple times lol. Such a quality game that was way ahead of its time and no hand holding. They should bring these types of games back I bet they could even port it to be able to play on our Cellphones
QFG4 is absolutely fantastic and one of my faves. I always thought the fighter class was the most versatile, though. By the time QFG4 came around, my character was a Paladin Thief who could do magic :) The big sword is something no other class could get so I always started there.
My first experience with Quest for Glory was... *cough* a pirated copy of QfG 2. I absolutely loved it. I got QfG 3 when I found out about. I think it was a birthday or Christmas gift. It was alright. 2 was better, imo. But then I got QfG 4 in Dec 1993 on disk. I live in Canada and bought it in California while my family was on holidays. I had to wait 3 or 4 days before I got back home and installed it. I looked at the box so many times and read through the manual during that time. The anticipation was high. And I have to admit, it didn't disappoint. I absolutely love this game. Not only is it my favourite in the series but it is my all time favourite game, of any genre. I didn't get the CD version with the voice acting till I bought the Anthology on CD. Which was also the first time I play QfG 1, my second least favourite in the series after QfG 5. John Rhys Davies was one of my favourite actors growing up and was absolutely thrilled when I heard him as narrator. Your video was great and I completely agree with you except for combat. Besides the combat in 5 (man I dislike that game) it has the worst combat in the series. And the bit about the Romany I think is done very well. After you solve the problem the townspeople are proven wrong about the bigoted language and shows just how ignorance about a people and culture can lead to unwarranted hate and shows how foolish that is. Sorry about the novella.
Cool! I never played this Sierra game or series, but it looks as good as any of the others i enjoyed (Space Quest, Police Quest, etc), back in the day. Greetings from Vancouver, Pam!
Awesome video! These game series introduced me to RPG's with classes, puzzles, and storytelling. Every game was fresh with a new location and mythology. Miss playing these games with friends trying to figure out puzzles and getting a perfect score (pre-internet).
I still think the first game (specifically the EGA version, not the VGA point-n-click update) was the best, but QFG4 is easily my second favorite! I always played a Thief that unlocks all skills so you can do EVERYTHING - actually managed to get 500/500 puzzle points in Hero's Quest!
Just gonna say that while yes, there are prejudices historically against gypsies - you don't know where they come from until you deal with them in real life in another country. I dealt with gypsies in Russia and there was some seriously fucked up shit going on that you wouldn't believe. People should be treated fairly but on the other hand, there is a reason why in foreign countries people are salty about them, which I learned about the hard way. Stuff like using hordes of little children to swarm you, latch on to you and rob you (almost happened to me), stuff with the central Asian drug trade, prostitution...it's really messed up. This isn't a racial thing or cultural thing - but this is about some real problems that have become part of their scattered community in parts of the world. Tourists who have never been around bona fide gypsies have this romanticized idea because we have no experience, but the locals know you better watch out and to stay away. Sad but true. It's an ugly world. That being said, though, the dialogue about the gypsies in the game, I'm sure, is meant to simply show the locals' prejudice and initially closed off nature (founded or not).
I remember playing this when it came out. It is still one of my favorite memories. I highly suggest this one. You can play the entire series as point and click now, which I highly suggest for the full story if you are up for a 5 game serries. That and being able to import your character from game to game to get bonuses.
I got a chuckle at 6:00 when you talk about "stealing from the townspeople at night" while the video shows you burgling the old man's house after he's gone.
This brings back so many memories. I loved this game in...I guess it would have been junior high. This and Doom were my jams back then. I don't remember the voice acting, though. I must have turned it off; my computer back then was not great. I also needed to sacrifice a lot of resolution for a decent frame rate in Doom.
I've never played the Quest for Glory games, but this game looks promising and I'll have to check it out. The idea of combining adventure and rpg elements is especially appealing to me. For those interested, right now a collection of Quest for Glory 1-5 is on sale on GOG for $6.49 USD.
I have no experience with the Quest For Glory series, and this video is making me want to get into it. I love a good point-and-click adventure, and I love a good RPG, so looks like a pretty solid deal. Thanks for your in depth review, as always. It's very much appreciated.
For those who have played this, I want your input on something. How long do you think it would take someone who has never played an adventure game before to get out of the first couple rooms, with little to no direction on how to play the game? I've wanted to try this on a couple friends, but never had the chance. I figure this would be a decent intelligence test.
Really wished I'd played this more back in the day... My friend had it, but we never got very far together. Love the art direction and character design here! This was truly the pinnacle of the "PC adventure RPG" genre.
Jim Cummings voices Winnie the Pooh, Tigger, Pete, Darkwing Duck, and hundreds of other characters... and he's done dozens (if not hundreds) of _movie trailers._ One that sticks with me is "City of Angels." Look up his demo reels; they're worth the experience. Russi Taylor is often brought up as the longtime voice of Minnie Mouse, but (as heard in this character's voice) she used her Huey, Dewey, Louie, and Webbigail voice(s) for more characters -- including the clam from _King's Quest VI._
Me, seeing the artstyle in town and townspeople(also hearing the "burgmeistr") "this has some heavy Slavic influences" few moments later "the game is based on slav mythology". Nice.
I still remember the day... WAY way way back in the day, my dad came home with Quest For Glory: So You Want To Be A Hero. I chose Fighter, my dad chose Magic User. I still have the box, and disks! It came in two flavors. 3 1/2 inch floppies, and 5 1/4 inch floppies. I still get warm feelings when I look at it...
My dad is the one who got me into adventure games in the first place. I was playing SNES side scrollers, and Atari, until that day. I still have those cartrages, too! It was so long ago, so I don't think I beat it myself, but I did watch my dad beat it.
Oh man, this just unlocked childhood memories. My aunt had this on her computer when I was a kid. I managed to play it for about 20 minutes before she yelled at me because her "sound doesn't work, and playing that will make it worse". I couldn't never remember what it was called after that. Crazy
This was my favourite QFG game. My mum introduced me to the EGA QFG1 first when I was just starting primary school (probably in a futile attempt to keep me away from Leisure Suit Larry which I'd caught the adults playing! 😈)
I played the majority of the old school Sierra adventure games but somehow never tried QFG. Your video has me thinking that it's finally time to give it a try.
Really dig that there is a big fanbase for these adventure games. I met people who enjoy them immensly. Personally i like the whole setup, but never played them as a kid. Wish i could find the same magic feel...
OMG I'm running through the whole series on GOG right now. I've always wanted to do the Paladin since I was a kid and my dad bought this game but couldn't because you needed to transfer a save to play Paladin
I think the uncomfortable parts of games, specially older games, is a good thing. There's somethings we should be uncomfortable with, but most companies want to paper over them or just cut them, pretending that they never happened.
I always interpreted this aspect of the game as a deliberate way to show how small minded the towns folk are. Especially because these "gypsies" end up becoming your friends and helping you. Like, the moral of the story is to show us why we *shouldn't* be prejudiced.
Number 4 is definitely the best - I'm so happy there are folk still talking about this games!

Magic is so much fun in these games, even when I play another class I like to have a few points in it.
I like Toby he has an awesome heart & cares for Tanya
toby --- dobby.... must be smth in those bbbees .... :)
Loved this, and your cat peering around the corner 😂. This along with the 3rd game were my absolute favorites growing up. They are still the only ones I’ve played.
I really like the 3rd game as well.
Thank you
As a Quest for Glory fan, I loved the first game the most, specifically the VGA remake.
I love this game. It is still one of my all time favorites to this day.
Hi Pam. I wish I had known about this game series back in the day. Thanks for the review. It seems ahead of it's time.
Why this channel doesn't get more views is beyond me. Entertaining videos, fun topics, great technical knowledge, and a stunningly beautiful woman.
This series was such a huge part of my middleschool years.
The voice cast is so good. Jennifer Hale is one of my favourites.
Love your outfit. The hair, makeup, shirt and necklace/choker all matches perfectly. It rocks ⭐🌟🌠✨
My favorite Quest for Glory. I love the Slavic mythology and creepy atmosphere.
I played the frick-lickin' heck out of this game when I was a kid. So many memories! Thanks for covering this Pam
No problem
Cool! I never played this Sierra game or series, but it looks as good as any of the others i enjoyed (Space Quest, Police Quest, etc), back in the day. Greetings from Vancouver, Pam!
Oh wow, that's quite the impressive voice actor list. Never knew who they were, let alone that they were fairly big names in voice acting.
Awesome video! These game series introduced me to RPG's with classes, puzzles, and storytelling. Every game was fresh with a new location and mythology. Miss playing these games with friends trying to figure out puzzles and getting a perfect score (pre-internet).
Thanks! The series was such a good mash up of genres.
I still think the first game (specifically the EGA version, not the VGA point-n-click update) was the best, but QFG4 is easily my second favorite! I always played a Thief that unlocks all skills so you can do EVERYTHING - actually managed to get 500/500 puzzle points in Hero's Quest!
Hi Pam, this reminds me of Dark Castle
That game was hard and I remember the controls being stiff! Love your necklace!
Have a good day
Thanks!
Delightful review of an excellent game Pam, thank you for sharing! 🙆♀️
Loved playing this game! One of my favourites.
Thanks for this.
🖤🖤🖤💀🖤🖤🖤
Glad you enjoyed!
That voice cast is insane, I’m normally not a huge adventure game player but I want to give this a shot, sounds like it has personality for days
I remember playing this when it came out. It is still one of my favorite memories. I highly suggest this one. You can play the entire series as point and click now, which I highly suggest for the full story if you are up for a 5 game serries. That and being able to import your character from game to game to get bonuses.
The quest for glory series is four of the best games ever made.
One of my favorite games of all time. Loved your video!
Thanks!
The original, floppy disc version had no voice acting.
I've been playing Shadows of Darkness to sense the it 90s and still find it enjoyable today.
I've never played the Quest for Glory games, but this game looks promising and I'll have to check it out. The idea of combining adventure and rpg elements is especially appealing to me. For those interested, right now a collection of Quest for Glory 1-5 is on sale on GOG for $6.49 USD.
This game is, imo, a top tier point and click. If you have any remote interest, it's a must play along the likes of Kings Quest vi. Hope you enjoy it!
Did you play it?
I was not even tracking this series, and I see the whole package I-5 on sale for $6.49 or something like that.
Hope you enjoy the games!
I have no experience with the Quest For Glory series, and this video is making me want to get into it. I love a good point-and-click adventure, and I love a good RPG, so looks like a pretty solid deal.
Thanks for your in depth review, as always. It's very much appreciated.
No problem, glad you liked it.
This was truly the pinnacle of the "PC adventure RPG" genre.
you can get the whole series on gog for a couple bucks. it's more than worth it.
Great review The Quest games are on my bucket list of games I need to beat.
That was my first foray into QFG. Loved that series!
Hoooooh!! Good choice and great video. I loved this game as a kid.
Fantastic review! I've never played any of the QFG games, but now I'm more than willing to try...
Thanks! I hope you give them a try.
+10 For the Monty Python reference!
Pam: "Come on! She's cold. You know you want to!"
Me: "Cannonball!"
I mean, there's worse ways to go.
Thank you for mentioning Sliders! Also, hi, floofy kitty!
I never played Quest for Glory series. But I played its sister titles Kings Quest and Space Quest. Would love to see these series revived.
5:28 - Wait, how does Pam know me so well?!? I'm a rather complex person but somehow she knew exactly what I would have done.
That's cool that you both played it. My parents would occasionally play Tetris or something on my NES, but weren't much for the adventure games.
My dad is the one who got me into adventure games in the first place. I was playing SNES side scrollers, and Atari, until that day.
I still have those cartrages, too!
It was so long ago, so I don't think I beat it myself, but I did watch my dad beat it.
Quest for Glory something I missed, but can enjoy vicariously thanks to this delightful review.
Oh man, this just unlocked childhood memories. My aunt had this on her computer when I was a kid. I managed to play it for about 20 minutes before she yelled at me because her "sound doesn't work, and playing that will make it worse". I couldn't never remember what it was called after that. Crazy
yes she was
You should try Heroine's Quest. It plays out like Quest for Glory 4 and digestible graphics and is a nod towards the Qfg series.
This was my favourite QFG game. My mum introduced me to the EGA QFG1 first when I was just starting primary school (probably in a futile attempt to keep me away from Leisure Suit Larry which I'd caught the adults playing! 😈)
That choker is amazing! You and I have similar fashion sense.
God damn, this hits that nostalgia button:)
Reminds me of Hugo's House of Horrors? Or Maniac Mansion; sick music in that game.
I like how spooky the game and characters look. Baba Yaga is straight up the Cryptkeeper from Tales From The Crypt!
I was thinking she must be related to him lol
I think the uncomfortable parts of games, specially older games, is a good thing. There's somethings we should be uncomfortable with, but most companies want to paper over them or just cut them, pretending that they never happened.
I always interpreted this aspect of the game as a deliberate way to show how small minded the towns folk are. Especially because these "gypsies" end up becoming your friends and helping you. Like, the moral of the story is to show us why we *shouldn't* be prejudiced.
Me to and your right we should be uncomfortable with older vide games like Quest for Glory Shadows of Darkness
there's nothing uncomfortable about any of these games
Cry for days.
Your content is very entertaining, thank you!
I appreciate that!
I used to play Quest for Glory (it was called Heros Quest back then) on a Tandy 1000 it ran at 10 frames a second but I completed it.
