The i8 was not designed for performance in mind: it was designed for having a fun and futuristic ride. BMW wanted people to experience a new car, not your typical boring cars you see. BMW wanted the i8 to be on a league of its own- and they've already proved it here with this beast. I don't care if it's fast- everything from the technology to the design and the driver experience is the main reason why I think the i8 is truly a revolutionary car. It takes things to a whole new level.
***** Tell you what, i'll give you some of mine and we continue to save together. When we have the money, we will buy it and drive it one day on, one day off. We could rope een a next man to handle insurance too lol
Wow its like... You know like... The best like... I'm American like... Just like... Like... Like... I have like problems, with like, my speech, because like, I used Daddy's money to like... get this like... car... As such... My education is like... shit... Because I dropped out of school and like... it doesn't even like... bother me... Because, like... I got money.
I have a BMW i3 REX, and at $0.31 per kw. It comes out to $6.82 for a full charge at my house, which is cheap for 80 miles of range. Just don't use a public charging station like blink. They charge $0.59 per kw and it takes $12.98 for a full charge. Also, what people don't mention is that it takes 12 hours for a full charge with the charger it comes with. If you want to charge your car from zero to 80% in 30 minutes. You would have to buy a fast DC charger like I have, it'll set you back $1500 from BMW, and Bosch will have to come out and install it.
Kelvin Waters I mean, yes, if you actually really want to go full electric the Tesla S is basically the only good option. However, not all the people are ready for that. People who travel a lot can't rely on the limited range, people who live far from fast charge stations could also run into problems, etc. Full electric is a great option in some cases. I honestly believe it. But right now it's in its adolescence, it's not the holy grail some people think it is. Not just yet.
Nice review, but IMO, The Verge is a channel for new technology and reviews of tech, not a car review channel, so I think you guys should have stuck to what you know best and review/talk about the tech a bit more, and less about the handling and engine noise. Didn't actually get to learn much about the inside of the car. MKBHD's review of the Model S is a great example of how to review the car from a tech perspective. Doubt this comment will garner any attention, but thanks for reading.
it's not really a "fake" engine noise, more like an amplified engine noise through the speaker, I agree with the lame part though, I wish BMW had use the awesome V8 instead :P
Isnt that still an full electric car? This is not mate, its an hybrid and the "pumping of engine sounds into the cabin" is the experience thing because the engine note is unlike any of the previous bmws.
It's because BMWs are so well buttoned together they have very good sound deadening. Close that door and the car gets dead silent. So they pipe in the engine noise. It's the epic battle between luxury and sportiness that BMW is trying to make co-exist. And doing an excellent job at it I might add.
+Jack Frost It looks like a modded M3 GTR but is slightly riced out man. As in I'm better off with a modded Supra or dodge. Or something more affordable like a Honda S2000.
Wait why the fuck would I want engine noises pumped into the car? Wouldn't I want it to be quiet so I could hear the radio or someone talking or, you know, other fucking cars so I don't crash into anything?
Because auto enthusiasts (the people who built this car) enjoy listening to the engine. They want hear the engine roar rather than listen to Taylor Swift's latest song on the radio.
Great car, terrible review. Any specs would have been nice, MPG for instance. The purpose of the doors is so you can open them in a tight parking spot, unlike most sports cars or coupes. Lastly who the hell taught you to drive with your hands at five to one or even twelve o'clock. Terrible cornering control method.
+Nic Stroud Well for the tight spots, just modify your car's doors so that it'll do the same thing. Which is technically ricing but it's the same thing as this.
Best way to afford this car? I'm 20 y/o going to school for business/computer programming. Should I start my own business after graduating or slowly save up to buy it?
"It seems" should be at the beginning of your sentence, not at the end. Unless you meant for there to be a comma after high school. "It seems his grasp of English [capitalized] is just beyond high school. There. You're welcome. Oh, the irony. Get off it. The guy gets to drive cars for a living. Do you?
Steven Mallett no, unfortunately. I get to save lives as a surgeon and drive cars in my spare time. Do you? and this is a youtube comment. Not a formal review piece for an online news site. colloquialism is accepted in such forums....it appears you were devoid of that knowledge and have never read a youtube comment section before. it happens....perhaps?
Kuj0Jotar0 Everyone is thrilled, completely thankful in fact, that you chose to become a surgeon. [If that's what you really are, because I have zero belief in that story]. I'm assuming you don't get enough praise at work, due to your underlying need to point out what it is that you do. That was never a challenge, BTW, it was a simple question. He gets to do something as easy and enjoyable as test cars. Do you? NO? Oh, then STFU. There's no follow up with a my-job-is-better-than-yours tirade. Jeez, sorry about the size of your penis, man. But the thing is: Even if you ARE a surgeon, and save lives- it doesn't give you the right to insult someone by claiming they have a high school-level grasp of the English language. I don't know what kind of "surgeon" goes online, watches a video [WILLINGLY] and berates the reviewer afterwards. I'm sorry, did he force you to watch the video? No? Then again, STFU. Don't be such a dick to people online. Oh, and I hope your bedside manner far exceeds your professionalism and respect towards others. If not, I'd find a new job. Again, working off the "I'm a surgeon" [who happens to troll] claim. Which, come on- everyone knows you aren't. May I see your LinkedIn profile? I just love having surgeons in my network. A marketing firm CMO can never seem to have enough surgeons around, ya know?

Tech was mentioned a few times in the video. What exactly is being referred to here? I mean, a lot of the stuff have found its way on some 'normal' road cars too (hybrid engine, LED lights that can change, etc). Is there something more or is it just a fancy looking futuristic car? I was expecting to see more on the actual tech side that differentiates the BMW i8 from existing road cars.
Yeah but it won't get the same looks the i8 will. Plus the i8 is a hybrid and the tesla is all electric. These cars really are made for different audiences

My fucking god, first 10 seconds of this review and you can already tell that A: The reviewer is actually a 14 year old white girl who can't help but say "like" at least 3 times in every sentence, or B: He literally didn't make it past 7th grade English.
Two things that I hate about i8. First you can't get it for 150K, you end up paying 200-250K depend on where you live(limited run, dealer jack up price); then second, for a car like this, the steering wheel is still manually adjusted instead of power adjusted. What's up with that?
First, the best thing to come out of Munich recently was Mario Götze (wir sind Weltmeister!!!) Second, the i3 is disappointing, but this is much better. Three, nice touch on the national anthem during the parking lot scene.

Fake engine noise is kinda lame to be honest. Did the tesla need fake engine noise to sound epic? No.
LightCan no i am not talking about the normal tesla, i mean the 4 wheel drive one, theverge made a video about it. The one that gets 0-60 really fast
LightCan watch the video TheVerge made when driving it, you can hear what it sounds like

It's awesome that BMW brought this much of gorgeous lines from the ''Vision'' concept!
The i8 and 650 gran coupé are the only BMWs I would ever purchase. This car is so beautiful. I'm pretty sure in 5 or 6 years when the price drops we'll be seeing a lot more of them out on the road.
Love to actually know what tech is in the car. For a tech site he didn't really cover any of it other than to talk about the plastics.
I've been extremely fortunate to see and sit in one of these. Absolutely astounding car.
Tech was mentioned a few times in the video. What exactly is being referred to here? Or for the same price you could get a Tesla P90D with ludicrous mode with 700+ horsepower.
And way more room and superchargers
Yeah but it won't get the same looks the i8 will. Plus the i8 is a hybrid and the tesla is all electric. These cars really are made for different audiences
i can proudly tell that we have that car in my smll town..
What about fuel consumption? Perhaps I missed it in the video. But it's sort of one of the main reasons to get a hybrid car in the first place...
It's high rated because of the "i" in the i8. I mean, The Verge has a habit of giving high ratings to things with "i" in front of them...
Aris Are you trying to bash Apple?
having fun in sports mode at 20mph? really?
It feels LIKE a LIKE you know LIKE a car. Its such LIKE a great LIKE feeling.

Chris, whats up with your hands positions on the steering wheel? Never heard of 10 to 2? There is a very good reason for that.
How to ACTUALLY get into a low car (or any difficult one for that matter):
1. Sit down in seat sideways
2. Rotate and slide your legs in
3. Close door
Is it really that hard?
notice it's fat people who have trouble with that
"You can stash a child or two" 😂
Amazing camera shots.
**adds to cart**
Beautiful Cinematography
i like how you said stash a child or two, like your going to be hilding bodies in the the back hahaha
The first real civilised review , much better than watching Chris Harris do his drifts "review" thank you the verge !!!
All very well and good, but how does it compare to it's conventional rivals? Or even other electric vehicles/hybrids like the Teslas? Not a good review, tbh.
As soon as I saw this appear in mission impossible a few years back I instantly fell in love.
I enjoy watching your videos. I love the BMW I8 hopefully I will purchase one.
That parking lot scene was pretty ridiculous.I'm not sure this guy has ever driven a car before, let alone reviewed one.
"Since we have this car park to ourselves.... and we're in in sports mode, lets have some fun with it" *passes a family in a van.
My fucking god, first 10 seconds of this review and you can already tell that A: The reviewer is actually a 14 year old white girl who can't help but say "like" at least 3 times in every sentence, or B: He literally didn't make it past 7th grade English.
Wow! The best car review ever the verge, you guys know what to do.👍
/drive said when in electric mode, its super quiet which I love it so much. Seen a few i3, looks awesome!
8 "likes" in 15 seconds at the beginning! Look out top gear creative writing coming from the competition!!!!
I think he failed to mention any of the cutting edge car tech he is going on about other than the frame (CFRP) :(
the audio is kinda muddy, boost the vocals and lower the music
Where they recorded the video?
You should be part of top gear your review is so good
Top Gear is just a poor comedy show, this guy actually did a great job reviewing the car.
kdjhsdfhdslfkj "Poor".... We are talking about the #1 reality TV show in the world since the mid 2000's right?
If I want to laugh, I watch a good comedy show, if I want to learn something about cars I don't watch Top Gear.
A Typical RUclipsr Since 2050? :0
the engine noise is 100% fake unfortunately
Not entirely.
If I had one i would turn that fake sound off immediately. Since 3-cylinders sounds pretty decent.
It is for safety reasons!
I saw this parked on the street the other day; I thought it was a prop car for a futuristic movie. lol
I miss Seaport in Boston. Realness in the summer
loved the gorgeously shot review, thanks.
Damn, the amount of times this guys says "like" at the start.
I don't like BMW, but I enjoyed your video, exspecially when the "Deutschlandlied" played in the background ;-)
Probably the best video the verge has ever produced...because they didn't mention Apple. Not once.
Wow the interior is fricken beautiful.
Now that is what you call a car of the future.
Are you guys trying to take down cnet, when did you guys start doing cars?
The doors look like space-savers particularly for parking.
This is car straight out of a game...... AMAZING!!!!!!
Tracklist please!!!

Two things that I hate about i8. First you can't get it for 150K, you end up paying 200-250K depend on where you live(limited run, dealer jack up price); then second, for a car like this, the steering wheel is still manually adjusted instead of power adjusted. What's up with that?
Cool i8 review.
Please do BMW i8 give away!
First, the best thing to come out of Munich recently was Mario Götze (wir sind Weltmeister!!!) Second, the i3 is disappointing, but this is much better. Three, nice touch on the national anthem during the parking lot scene.
i noticed they called it a super car a few times technicaly its a sports car not a super car although yes it looks like a super car.
the first time i saw it i thought it was a super car i was surprized to see that BMW made a super car turns out i just wasnt useing my common sence. because BMW wont make a super car,
How the fuck do they get those camera angles
How's this car do on snow and winter??
What's the tech like in this thing?
compare it with TESLA P85D
u got this car three days? An this review is all u got? What about connectivity with smart devices, etc.. Really really bad! U could have shown us so much more!
I want the car from irobot, this isn't as close as I was hoping.
it just feels like like like like
