It all started here, this was the first Doug video I ever watched and every now and then I come back and rewatch just to appreciate it.

To be honest, I ducking hate 3 cylinders, sound like crap, drive like crap, but the 1.5 from BMW is the only one that I think is kinda okay
It's shockingly fast. His reaction is genuine. It's because it's AWD, has an electric motor as well, turbo on the 3 banger, insanely fast transmission, & the entire frame is carbon fiber. The 3 banger was selected strictly for minimal gas consumption. It's much more complex & expensive than a standard v8. Now a v8 in the new Vette can get u to 60mph a second faster but its 12 mpg vs the i8 which does 99.9 mpg in EcoPro. Not really a bad choice either way u go tbh. Love both. Watch the i8 drag race on yt. Surprisingly not much beats it even today. Mostly other newer electric cars. Idk why Beemer didnt keep making these another 6 years & take advantage of the newer HP & range found in today's electric motors/packs. They have the tech. The new i 7 series is all electric w/ 300+ in range. If they put tht electric motor/pack in the i8 but kept the 3 banger it would smoke a Plaid & look/handle way better. They literally have the tech at their disposal & the i8 is beautiful. It handles like a dream. It feels like a 911. I love them as is, but it's still a shame it never saw the 7 series electric motor 😔

Please don't, for much less you can get much more, like an S-class, or, if you really like electric cars, a Tesla. At least they don't pretend they have a V8.

@tamanyamwandila2834 Possibly the best looking car ever made. May not be #1 but its in the convo 4 sure. The cuts on the back quarter panel & the rear tailights just murder. The vents on the back window just look so mean too. Imo those areas are the sexiest of any car ever. The front nose I think lags behind the new Vette. I prefer the sharper points on the Vette. The sharp angles on the Vette's hood are 🔥. The i8's front isn't bad. It still looks like a Beemer meets a super car to me. It just isnt quite as aggressive as I like today. I wish they kept making it w/ a new front nose/bumper & w/ the electric motor/battery pack they put in the new 7 series. They'd possibly have the best sports car ever if they did. The i8, new Vette Stingray, the OG Testarossa, & the NSX are my 4 favs. Wish I had a garage w/ all 4. 🤣

It could be because they're very hard to lose. They're high-visibility, so they're hard to forget, and if you do misplace one, either a) it's too garish for anyone else to want it, so no one steals it, or b) you know it's yours if you find it again because, again, no one else has one like it. Unless, that is, you run into someone who had the same dumb idea you did. And then you've only lost a cable you never really liked in the first place.

I remember seeing like 4 of these in the town I work in for about a week and they were quickly replaced by G wagons and real supercars again. And I never saw them again. They had such a short lifespan I am just discovering what they are about.
The sound isn't fake per se. That is how the 3-cylinder engine actually sounds. It is just amplified and fed into the sound system, but it is the actual sound of the engine.

Not that I have anything against these new faux engine stereo sounds, as it gives you the option to turn it off when you just want peace and quiet.
3 cylinders do sound like half a V6 or I6 though, more melodic than one would expect...
What i'm saying is, that they haven't recorded a totally different V6 motor and playing the samples back in the cabin. Instead the sound is recorded in real time from the real engine and then audio processed before fed back into the cabin so it sounds better. In other words. It's like makeup instead of fake tits.
So three cylinders now sound like nearly race ready V8s now?!

The engine is right behind you and you can definitely hear it and sense it, however it would sound really dull and flat in it's pure form so they pump in some additional sound to make it more pleasurable and exciting - and I think that's only in sport mode, the normal mode keeps it as quiet as it can be, so you get to choose how you like it.

Awesome review. I am 80 Years Old and thought I would NEVER buy a sports car. I have had little interest in cars in general since the 60's. I saw this car in the TV show RIVIERA AND FELL IN LOVE. It is hot and gorgeous and TIMELY. I remember when I first saw the red Thunderbird in View from Pompeii's Head (film) in the 50's and I had the same feeling. I WANTED ONE. I love the idea that Sports Car Buffs hate it because it is a PRETENDER. That's exactly why I want one! And don't underestimate its ability to perform like a Sports Car if you are in the mood. I might even do that myself. I am also glad that its going to have a short run and become a cult classic...

my driving school had one of those and everyone loved it. such an easy to handle car, sooo much fun! the transmission is extremely smooth, the seats (in the front at least) are quite comfortable and the sound is great. really underrated

Doug, the second handle is an emergency release for the doors. Careful, its fragile since its a one time use in an emergency. Anyway,I love this car. I drive it year round. Its pretty solid for sure!

Having recently ridden in an i8, ive gained a new appreciation for it since watching this video years ago and losing it. It was once a dream car, then went away when i learned it was hybrid electric in this video, then made its way back to the list after riding and learning from the owner more in depth about it than watching a video can show.

I checked out an i8 at a BMW dealership. The backseats are SO AWFUL. I would never subject a friend to sitting back there.

EVs hurt your ego. The i8 uses carbon composite and has low cg and the potential for much better handling and acceleration. The i8 will also have cheaper running costs.
Porsche know this and will start to use Composite and hybrid tech themselves. Porsche's first car was an EV
But if you your are paying 150k for a car, you should, at least, get real engine noises.
The M6 costs around 114,000$ in the US. It is cheaper. lol

Worth it? No way. R8 V10 destroys it in nearly every metric for the same price. Want a hybrid? Fine, then get the new NSX, which is also the same price. Both of those cars leave the i8 in the dust. The i8 essentially matches the BMW M2's acceleration figures for 3x the cost. Sure, it looks pretty damn cool, but for $150k? No way
