They say it’s almost unheard of for a show to be picked up based on an outline, but in reality Lost was the ABC President’s idea in the first place. As long as the outline didn’t completely suck, ABC was always going to pick it up. I guarantee that if a random screenwriter had submitted the exact same outline without it being the boss’s idea, it would’ve gone straight in the bin.
But they had a full script written by another writer (Jeffrey Lieber) before Abrams and Lindelof were ever involved. And the ABC president hated it and told his people to get another writer. So, it doesn't seem likely he would have gone along with any outline that was submitted to him.

I actually believe that mostly--based on the original docs I've seen, I believe they believed that at the time--but the actual series went in different directions. The lie in that original outline was that they swore that Lost would not be a serialized show.
