I just finished watching the series last night. This explanation is spot on! Everything that happened on the island... happened. Our protagonists took part in one of the most monumental events in human history… the struggle to keep the darkness at bay. The entire alternate storyline that took place (during the Final Season) following the safe landing of Oceanic Flight 815, was in actuality a shared purgatory; A waiting room where our characters continued to evolve until they were ready to shed the fears and weakness that anchored them to the human plane. By the end of the season, our core characters are ready to move on to the afterlife. But not all. For instance, when we meet Ana Lucia, she is a dirty cop, accepting a bribe. Hurley states that she "is not ready." Meaning she is still mired down in human weakness. Her time is yet to come. But, due to the strong human bonds (and loving relationships) that our core group formed during this struggle, they needed to wait for each other, and reunite so they could move on as a group. We see the gathering at the church from the perspective of Jack, most likely because he was their leader and sacrificed his life for the group. But purgatory is a reality that exists “out of time.” For instance, Hurley and Linus could have been the island's protectors for a thousand years after Jack died. The group that escaped the island probably went on to live full lives. We will never know their stories. But in the end, they all met at the church as a group, on a timeless plane, to make the final journey into the light.

@@indra3821It’s the same timeline, except it occurs for everyone after they die. It’s based on the Buddhist concept of the Bardo, found in the Tibetan Book of the Dead. In very simplistic terms, it’s where people go after they die to work out any remaining issues before their next rebirth. That’s why Jack, who has issues with his father, finally gets to be a father himself, why Sawyer, who struggled with being an honorable person is a policeman, not a con-man, etc. There is no concept of time here, so no matter when one of them dies, they all appear there together. Also, as Christian explains, for our losties, the time they spent together on the island was the most important time of their lives, so they created that specific Bardot so they could all meet, let go, and move on together.
Like the video mentions, the confusion comes because the writers didn’t want to give anything away too early. They introduced the flash-sideways chronologically right after jughead exploded as a red herring to get viewers to think it was an alternate timeline. However, the flash sideways didn’t actually occur until after the last lostie died (whenever it happened).

I think it all happens at the same time. That’s why they were all in the church at the same time. Kinda like supernaturals ending. Dean died in his 30s and sam in his 70s but it was all within a couple of min to dean in heaven. Because time is different in the afterlife. Years happen in seconds so it’s like it’s all happening at once. So for example Boone died in the beginning and jack in the finale, but to Boone and jack they met at the church at the same time because their life’s ended at the same point for them. Even though it’s years apart, to Boone it was just a second or two. He wasn’t waiting long. Just my opinion.

When Jack’s eyes closed one and the “Lost” title came up on the screen, I bawled my eyes out. lost is such a beautiful story. It dawned upon me that Lost isn’t just some thriller action/adventure tv show about people trying to survive on a deserted island. Lost is about how each of those people are “Lost” in their own lives as well. They tied it together so well in the end. This show is one of the prime examples of “its about the journey, not the destination.” And I’m tearing up.
I grew to love Jack, Desmond, Rose and Bernard, and even Ben Linus. Each character had a story and you sympathize for each even knowing all that they’ve done. Definitely the top 5 tv shows Ive watched.

I was a big fan of the show back then and got very frustrated with how the series ended, but still liked the series overall and always talked about it with my partner.
A couple of years ago she asked for us to watch it, and reluctantly I accepted. Oh Boy, was I wrong. The show is amazing, including the finale.
What I realized at last is that all my disappointment back in the day was due to the crazy expectations and theories we all had during the lost experience thing (which was amazing). I was just frustrated back then, but having watched the show again at a more mature age with better understanding made the show whole for me again.

The point of the whole story was pretty smart. Layers of mysteries, answers only leading to more questions without real resolution. We obsessed over the "why" and Jack obsessed over changing the fate of he and his friends. In the end, no resolution we got would have satisfied us. If we learned the original inhabitants of the island were from Mesopetamia, for instance, we'd say "why did they get there? When did they come? HOW DID THEY FIND ZE ISLANDAASXAAS"
In "across the sea", mother cuts short the pregnant girl who is about to ask "where did you come from" with a "any answer i give will only make you ask more questions..." Paraphrasing of course.
She's telling us and the woman to "let it go", just as Jack's dad said to him MANY times. "let it go, Jack."
The last season's "flash sideways" is the only thing that happened after everyone died, in Christian Shephard's words "some died before you...some ... LOOOONG after."
Jack lets it go and gives himself up to save his friends. This is the release and resolution for the show.
There's the moral to LOST. It was stated plainly in the last episode that what happened on the island DID HAPPEN, and that it was the most important time in Jack's entire life.

People are getting way to hung up on the hydrogen bomb. The hydrogen bomb had absolutely nothing to do with the end of the show. They lead you to believe that the H-bomb explosion caused the flash-sideways, but it didn't. The H-bomb story line is ultimately why the hatch included the timer and button. The main characters always played a key role in 'The Incident' which was mentioned in season 2 when they first enter the hatch. Drilling into the pocket, the shoot-out with Dharma, etc. That was always meant to happen. That WAS the incident. Once Jack and crew's role was done in the event, the island sent them back to 2007. It was about making sure that things happened always the way they were meant to. Now what happened with the bomb is unknown. Did it go off? Not sure, but probably not. What is interesting though is that it's clear that the entire event is the reason woman can't give birth on the island if they conceive there.

Lost is my favorite show of all time...and I love the end. I wish Christian had addressed the island and/or the light specifically in the church. I always have looked at it as, because the purgatory world is timeless, all souls are essentially stuck there for eternity, unless one has a moment in his or her life that is powerful enough to allow them to remember and move on. I like to think that, without the moments on the island, this group of people may have never been able to move on.
Also, there were two very bright lights in the finale...one being the heart of the island, and one being the light that filled the church. I find it hard to believe they weren't meant to be connected. Right after Jack fixes the island and turns the light on, we see the light fill the church. Maybe the island has a connection to the afterlife that is bigger than just the Oceanic 815 survivors? Maybe if Jack hadn't fixed that light, no soul would ever be able to move on.
Remember Hurley saying that they would all go to hell if the MIB left the island? So basically, if the MIB left the island, the light was out for good. So, if the light goes out for good, they all go to hell. If we take that literally, then the light certainly has a connection to one's fate after death in the LOST universe. So I dont think it is far fetched to say that the light that filled the church was the heart of the island.

    1. They weren’t dead the whole time
    2. The flash-sideway was the bridge between their death and heaven. They had to amend/deal with their regrets/struggles. Jack had to be a father so that he could experience what his father went through and finally forgive him. Sayid helped Nadia’s husband because he blamed himself for her death in real life. Ben helped Alex with her Yale application because he blamed himself for her death. After they dealt their complexes, finally they arrived at the church
    3. Even though they died in different times, they all met at the heaven as if they just died. There was no waiting in heaven. When Kate said to Jack at the concert, “I missed you so much”..she meant that she lived a lonely life after his death.
    4. The bomb didn’t work. Ben wasn’t on that plane. Still he was a part of the flash sideways. So the “plane didn’t crash because the bomb go off” theory isn’t correct.
    5. Richard’s curse was over. He wasn’t immortal. His hair turned grey.
    6. Ben couldn’t let go off the guilt/regret of Alex’s death. That’s why he didn’t enter the church. Also there’s a chance Ben tried to betray Hurley after he replaced Jack. When Hurley said, “Ben, you were a great number 2”, I felt like Hugo was trying to forgive Ben for something
    7. Dr chang was the host of the Dharma initiative videos. He was the also host of the charity concert. Maybe he found redemption too
    8. Jacob’s death was little undercooked. The only way someone could kill him if the person stabbed him before he could speak. But before dying, Jacob had a full conversation with Ben.

The thing that bothered me (that I haven’t seen anyone mention) is that in the original airing, at the very end, the flash to a shot of the beach. That was 13 years ago and they don’t do that on hulu. To the best of my recollection, it was either the plane and it hadn’t been picked over the way the survivors supposedly had done or there was no wreckage at all. All I can recall is that it looked like a big FU to the audience intended to say “look, none of that happened”
When I rewatched the show just now, I was looking for any sign that it either did or didn’t happen. The speech Christian made to Jack suggested that it did. He also explained that the ppl in the church had died at separate times. Jack died just after seeing the other plane escape and he smiled while being comforted by Vincent.
I wonder if they later removed the final beach shot because it was misleading and ambiguous.

At one point I've started having this idea in my mind that the guardians of the island are not immortal or young forever, I think that a guardian lives outside the bounderies of time, that the guardian doesn't see the time as a straight line, it can move ahead, it can move backwards, it can even appear somewhere after its death. And I think it can do that because that's the real power of the island. When you think about it, coming in contact with the island somehow unlocked this ability in Desmond to do a very similar thing, like a reducted version of the Guardian's power, since Des seems to be able, even if he doesn't control this power, to see his OWN time alive not as a straight line, moving his conscience through it, both backwards and further ahead. Also, while Desmond doesn't have the ability to change anything, the Guardians DO. That's how Jacob chooses his candidates, he sees their lives, in their entirety to make sure those would be worse without the island and then he comes back at a certain point of their lives to "touch" them and give them their new destiny, making sure they'll get to the island. And what the Man In Black posseses is a corrupted version of that same power. Those are all powers that come from the Island since the Island itself doesn't exist costantly through time, it moves through it, that's why it can't be found. It's not that absurd of a theory considering that's exactly what the Observers did in Fringe, another JJ Abrams series.

If there is no logical explanation why we bothered watching all those seasons? There are so many shows that are about people, choices and life. If Lost is about that, then it’s not different than other shows. We started watching and kept watching this show because of its mystery and because we wanted answers and explanations of what those mysteries are. That’s what kept me watching and waiting for the next episode, not the people and their relationships (which were also good to watch, but this is not the point). So in the end when I saw the finale I felt like I was scammed.

I also don't care about the destination and only care about the journey. HOWEVER I totally understand peoples complaints about not getting answers to the plethora of mysteries presented in the show because during its original network run it was marketed constantly as though the answers we all were waiting for were coming. I think that's mostly ABCs fault and not the writers though.

Their experiences on the island being a timeloop is critical to understanding the show, in my opinion. Heavy Buddhist themes throughout, clearly--wheel of samsara, reincarnation, Dharma initiative ("to do one's dharma" in life is to do the work necessary to evolve spiritually), heavy Buddhist/Taoist iconography during the final scene with Jack and his father, and probably more that I'm missing. The island represents the lessons and challenges these people had to evolve through to be released from the cycle of reincarnation. That's why their flashbacks and flash-sideways scenes were so important--the lessons on the island mirrored those earlier life lessons. Jack, the man of science, seems to have had the most difficult time of them all of letting go because of his reductive, ratiocinative mind. But he learns his ultimate life lesson and thus is able to enter the hall with his friends and loved ones to "move on." Perhaps to be released from the cycle of birth, death, and rebirth, or perhaps to embark on the next lifetime full of lessons. I think the former, however, because of the significance of the island itself. Ben not going into the church hall is also telling, I think, because when he "awoke" in the side-line, he must have realized that he committed mostly evil, selfish acts in his lifetime, thus he needs to "hang back," so that he can continue to understand his lesson/life purpose and then be able to ascend into infinite love like the others do. Who knows for sure as it's a truly deep and multifaceted piece of literature (if I could be so bold to call it that). It's a masterpiece of a show is all I'm certain of. Really got me thinking about life and death and spirituality and meaning and purpose and relationships and love. All the most important things in this life.

Just a little clarification for the people who are asking how come Juliet is not remembering them from the 70s. I might be wrong, because I haven't watched the episodes for years, but in time loops what counts is the personal proper time of the person. For example, Juliet has been born say in 1970, she lives on the Island, then the plane falls in 2004, then they do whatever they do until the time loop and then her older self goes back to the 70s. So basically, knowing them in the 70s, in 2004 is in Juliets's future , not in her past. So there is no way for her to recognise them. Just my 5 cents. I also thought the ending was dissatisfying but it was ok, because the series was so complicated, I can't see a rationally satisfying way to end it.

I thought maybe they just didn't like how all characters reunited at the end? But how could someone hate that? I feel like people who don’t get Lost, just don’t understand time travel. If it was actually possible to travel back into the past, anything you did to try to change things would always have been part of the timeline. Kate and Leopold gets close to doing time travel correctly, but it makes the mistake of having elevators start disappearing in the present. If Leopold was always going to go back to the past and Kate was always going to join him, then him inventing the elevator was still always going to happen. The only show - besides Lost - that has done time travel correctly is the first season of Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency (2016). In that, the people traveling through time cause everything to happen that they were trying to prevent. Like he explains in this video, it’s a time loop. The only way an alternate timeline could exist (in Lost) is if it exists outside time as we know it. That could be in the 4th dimension or on a spiritual plane - whatever actually happens after we die. Lost helped me understand a lot of theoretical science, but also reconcile science and spirituality.

What i thought was weird is that in the flash sideways world things are so much different. Jack had a kid with juliet, sawyer is a detective, etc. I think it would have been better if the purgatory started right after the plane lands, and everyone on board was there for their original purposes.

    • @melrupinski88
      @melrupinski88 7 месяцев назад +1

It wasn’t purgatory, it was based on the Buddhist concept of a Bardo described in the Tibetan Book of the Dead. Very simplistically, it allows people to resolve issues before moving on to rebirth, that’s why the experiences were different.

  • @RuddsReels
    @RuddsReels 6 лет назад +8

Just some points you may find interesting...
So from the perspective of the characters who went to the "flash sideways" purgatory realm, when did they start experiencing this timeline? Since they were on the plane when the first footage was shown in series 6, does that mean that's when they started or did they have to live their life again to reach that point and then fly and not crash?
I think the whole Island was purgatory. There are too many coincidences on the island that serve as personal artifacts relating to a given character. Echo for example found his brother on the very same plane he saw in Africa, with many other interconnecting coincidences.
One thing I have noticed is that when a character dies, shortly before he/she resolves something important to them, as if they have moved on from any unfinished business from the living world. For example Boon let his sister go after Lock put that hallucinogen on his head. A short time later he dies (moved on to the after life). Mr echo resolves his guilt for his brother's death, almost immediately he dies (moved on to the after life)
This also explains the reason why the babies born on the island died,. It was because there was not a soul within them. The survivors were lost souls (hence the title of the show). Babies conceived before the island (before the characters died) are dead as well but have a soul just like the mother so they too are in purgatory, that is why they were born. But babies conceived during the island (purgatory), they "die" of sorts because they are not real and have no soul.
You could be right but if you are, then it make less sense than if they were dead the whole time. Given the whole supernatural things going on as well as the things I mentioned.
You mentioned Christian stating everything that happened was real. But I believe what he was talking about, was his life, his dad and the people waiting in the next room, stating a real meaning out of the experience of life, not the island. He also said in the same scene that it was an environment they all created and they they needed each other to move on. He would not be saying that if the island was real (why would that be a point for moving on, mid-way through their life?) and I very much doubt he was talking about the flash sideways realm, since there were no challenges to move on, unlike the island.

    • @melrupinski88
      @melrupinski88 7 месяцев назад

I’m sorry, but for anyone reading this now, every point you bring up is contradicted by the show itself. Where the writers have weighed in, they’ve contradicted these points as well.
      - The flash sideways is based on the Buddhist concept of a Bardo, it has nothing to do with purgatory. The flash sideways begins for them at the moment of their death. Since time doesn’t exist in the flash sideways, no matter when they die, they will all enter the Bardo together…it will seem as though they all were on the plane at the same time. There’s really no other way to depict a reality outside of time within a reality that is based in time.
      - Again, purgatory was not a concept used by the writers. Regardless, the writers have explained many times, and the show itself explained that they were not dead the whole time.
Interconnectedness was a theme throughout the show. Many characters had shared connections. I can’t deduce how this is supposed to logically demonstrate that they must be dead.
      - What important things did Nikki, Paolo, Dr. Arzt, Anna Lucia, Libby etc resolve before they died?
      - The pregnancy issues occurred due to the incident at the Swan station in 1977. There were no issues with pregnancy before that. In fact, we see Ethan being born on the island to Horace (leader of the Dharma Initiative) and Amy Goodspeed. He certainly wasn’t born dead with no soul; he grows to hang out with Ben, accompanied him when Alex is taken, becomes the surgeon for the Others, helps recruit Juliet, infiltrates the camp of the fuselage survivors, kidnaps Claire, and ultimately only dies when Charlie shoots him (after about 30 years of life).
      - It’s a show with mystery and supernatural elements. Are you suggesting that the characters in every such show must be dead because it makes more sense to you? Were Mulder and Scully dead because of supernatural happenings in the X-Files? Were the residents of Twin Peaks all dead? Are the kids in Stranger Things all dead? No, this argument is a rationalization. Supernatural ≠ dead.
      - This argument is nonsensical and seems like another rationalization. To paraphrase: everything that happened is real in terms of the meaning of the experience of life except on the island, where the most important experiences of their lives occurred. Again, that make no logical sense - how can you separate the island from their life experiences?
Also, Christian is most definitely talking about the flash-sideways. They are in the flash sideways, not on the Island when he says, “THIS is the place that you...that you all made together, so that you could find one another.” He could not be referring to anything other than the flash sideways.
Also, you fail to understand that it is based on a Bardo, where once someone does, they go there to resolve lingering issues (letting go) in their life before moving on to rebirth. This is why Jack was able to resolve his father issues by being a father, others who are not ready to move on, like Ben, who is resolving issues with his own father, and with what he did to Danielle and Alex, or Eloise, who is resolving her issues with her son Daniel and his father, Charles Widmore both need more time to let go. Yes, these are challenges in death that the characters must resolve and let go of before they can move on to what’s next. Note, the writers didn’t favor any religious belief such as heaven or reincarnation, they left it as what’s next. That’s why when Jack asks, Christian responds, “let’s find out”.

I’d go to that book every day to see if it has changed back, and about 5/6/7 months later it had changed back , only for it to change again the next time looked. Too young to understand but I’ll never forget the confusion. The strangeness….. I’m 52 it’s interesting how I was 5 in 1977…….

I can't fucking believe how many people can be confused by this to be honest. To this day I still hear the "so they were dead the whole time I knew it". God damn it.
