I want to make an addendum too and say that I think in Maria’s scream there is an overtone at the B6 rather than B5 and one at a harmonic interval at the F or F# simultaneously coming out in the fry scream
I have waited for a video like this for 13 years. DIR EN GREY is my favorite band of all time, they're seriously underrated and Kyo gets faaar from the credit he deserves, perhaps partially because people don't know what's going on. So thank you for making this video
Kyo's voice is amazing. When he goes from a death metal growl to a soaring high scream, it's like taking a ride on a rollercoaster. Specifically, given the dark, edgy nature of Dir En Grey's music, a ride on the Euthanasia Rollercoaster.
Thank you for actually breaking some of these techniques down. Refreshing in a world filled with react videos. Tbh, I think Dir en grey are the most underrated band in metal.
@@Waltzhybrid92 They don't get a lot of coverage in the mainstream western metal press/community. And modern metal critics ignore them for the most part
Yes, so true! If Dir were not Japanese but they were American or English instead, they would have been at least as famous as Bring me the horizon or bands like that. Dir deserve a lot more than that. Obscure, their most viewed song, only have about 2 millions views. That's so little! It is way too low for such a great band. Kyo is probably the best screamer in the world and for sure he is the best screamer I have ever heard. I have never heard and I can't imagine someone better than him. His voice and technique are unbelievable.
the first song is Dozing Green, the second is Shitataru Mourou, and the third one and one that she returns to a bunch is Obscure, for anyone that's wondering.
At the beginning of DEG Kyo wasn't as good techically as he's right now and that's probably why he had injuries. You can listen some old songs and compare them with new ones - he improved A LOT. He's my favourite vocalist and probably always will be. Thank you for making this video - I was waiting so long for this.
And not just compare the old songs to the new ones. Listen to them play their old songs in their 2016-2017 live recordings. He literally breathed new life into them. Even though they don't use particularly insane techniques, he just sounded amazing.
Just too add to his list of techniques, Kyo also can do all his techniques both inhale and exhale. He has a history of vocal problems though, either from poor technique early on, or his continued use of inhale screams for effect. He knows the damage he is doing but the sounds he seems to want require that risk. This is perhaps part of the reason that the keep remaking some of there older songs in lower keys and with more guttural vocals.
Is that what he was doing with his voice in the bridge of Magasayou? Every time I hear that track, I have no idea how its physically possible for him to make the noises that he makes. It's like he turns into some sort of feral animal
PLEASE , kyo needs a 2 part with you. I can see that u rlly know what u're talking about, kyo's a monster, master of his voice and a lot of vocal techniques, you need to explain us what he are doing XD.
Seeing DEG live was such an awesome experience. I've seen them twice and each show was such a performance. Absolutely amazing live voice. You won't be disappointed if you get to see them perform live.
Whenever anybody asks me for one song to give them an idea of what DEG is about, I always recommend Vinushka. Easily one of my favorite songs they've ever done.
Kyo for me is amazing at doing really grotesque-sounding vocals and really beautiful vocals. Hageshisa To Kono Mune is such a pleasant song~ Kyo had surgery on his throat a few years ago as far as I recall. I think it is worth looking at more of his performances.
Kyo also has a lot of great clean vocals too! He is so versatile and can show so much emotion through his music, even if you don't know the language, he can make you feel what he wants you to feel. Its great.
Dani Filth, Maria Brink and Kyo are some of my favorite Metal vocalists, and now I kinda know why - those whistle frys are amazing! Thank you for the video, the explanation was superb!
Despite vocal injuries, despite hearing damage, he has only ever improved vocally. Somehow he has new techniques today that he didn't have in the videos you showed or even when this video was uploaded. And he hasn't slowed down using his voice or touring at all, in fact he's currently in 3 bands!
I would have never thought to find Kyo and Diana Damrau in the same video. Thank you for doing this, this was really informative and interesting! The live you saw from Wacken took place before his latest operation and it was definitely due to overuse. They toured constantly during that time, Japan, Europe, America, South-America, Japan and America again and producing an album in between. They've shorten their tours immensely since then and found time for other projects. I wish you could have looked at an entire song from after his surgery but I don't know if that would have helped the video in any way and it was still awesome the way it was!
Kyo is honestly a gift to the music industry, he's amazing live and has some serious talent. If you like extremes of scale I would also suggest beyond deviation with their best track (imo) white noise.
Dir en Grey was my whole teentime. Im proud of them. I'm proud of this music culture and even know that I am 30, I treasure it and will ever treasure it. Kyos normal singing voice is comfortable for me to sing but the higher he gets...my voice start to break 😆he is just extremely talented!!!
I've been a huge Dir en grey fan for 10+ years and to see someone actually analyze Kyo's voice range and technique is something I didn't know I needed. Plus being a voice major at one point myself made this even more exciting! And the fact that you compare one of my favorite singers, Diana, to Maria Brink was great. This is definitely stuff you don't learn in vocal pedagogy ahaha. This was really fun to watch and informative! ♥
I really like your videos. You're very knowledgable about vocals and it really sets you apart from other so-called "vocal coaches" who just gather views by reacting to videos without really saying anything.
I think you really should look at Kyo's more recent music, his voice has changed over the years, due to obvious vocal cords have been damaged, he's had at least 1, maybe 2 surgeries. I'd suggest that you listen to the Arche Live at Buddokan concert. It's amazing.
If anyone wants the name of the three songs by Dir En Grey shown in this video they're in this order. 1. Dozing Green 2. 滴る朦朧 (Shitataru Mourou) 3. Obscure
Thank you so much for your amazing detailed reaction!! Love your videos and thank you for reacting to my favorite vocalist Kyo and band DIR EN GREY!! Please do more reactions of this vocalist because he uses many different techniques and experiments a lot!!
Thank you for this fantastic video!! It's brilliant to learn a bit more about exactly what Kyo is doing with his voice! I'm a guitarist and a big Dir en grey fan for the past 18 years, i've always admired Kyo's clean vocals because for someone who can scream like a monster ( i love that by the way ! haha ) , he also has the ability to sound heavenly and angelic . I will admit that he is my favourite harsh vocalist ever. And one of my favourite metal vocalists and clean vocalists. There's too many to choose from of course but I just love his voice. Anyway, thank you so much for analysing his screams, it helps to have a professional vocalist and vocal teacher explain what is actually going on! :)
I just love the fact that Kyo and Maria are being talked about in the same video I love them both so much even tho I found In This Moment waaay later in life. I love the contrast of their voices
and the interesting thing is too, an inhale whistle sounds almost identical to the fry whistle but I am strongly advocating against inhale screaming due to the potential for damage - esp when exhale/fry sounds the same
Kyo is my absolute vocal idol. He really set the high water mark for having a versatile metal voice for me. I can only do whistle fry when inhaling, but I feel like I'm slowly getting close to unlocking it when exhaling. Right now I can inject falsetto into my fry scream and get pretty high (almost like Cam Pipes), but the whistle tone still escapes me. It's just amazing to me all the different kinds of vocalization Kyo can make happen and how easily he can transition from one to the other.
Ok, let's face it: YOU ARE AWESOME! ;-) I've noticed that trend on RUclips of "vocal coaches" reacting to stuff and most of it is basically just pretty overacted nonsense without any useful explanation of what is actually going on with the voice. Thank you so much! I've been wanting to learn the ins and outs of that technique for a while. I find I can do it a bit at times. Sometimes its easier then others.
The operatically sung whistle you mentioned is also something Kyo is know for, ironically. In the opening track to Dum Spiro Spero, The Blossoming Beelzebub, you uses a similar technique.
Hi! Could you give a shot to Gojira around "l'enfant sauvage" era. It seems like a type of fry, but I'd like to know more about how the vowels are used to emulate a pitch. Anyways, keep on the good work!
When he gets the recognition he deserves, it makes me pretty damn happy. Would be great to talk about the Uroboros album, Dum Spiro Spero, and/or The Insulated World. They're all great concept albums that show off a lot of different things from them.
I want to make an addendum too and say that I think in Maria’s scream there is an overtone at the B6 rather than B5 and one at a harmonic interval at the F or F# simultaneously coming out in the fry scream

Yeah I thought so.
Sho of Dimlim, Mio of NAZARE, and Maybe Keisuke of Deviloof, somewhat of the vocals of D.I.D.
It’d be awesome to see an explanation of keisuke of DEVILOOF. His screams are insane. Maybe a tutorial too

Hi! Could you give a shot to Gojira around "l'enfant sauvage" era. It seems like a type of fry, but I'd like to know more about how the vowels are used to emulate a pitch. Anyways, keep on the good work!
Kyo is amazing. Not sure why Maria Brink got so much more focus in this video. Kyo is the more gifted of the two
I love this lady
When he gets the recognition he deserves, it makes me pretty damn happy. Would be great to talk about the Uroboros album, Dum Spiro Spero, and/or The Insulated World. They're all great concept albums that show off a lot of different things from them.
Would love to see you analyse Sharon Den Adel of Within Temptation. I think her various vocals styles would make for an interesting video!
Subscribed now just because of this vid. (Probably would’ve subbed anyway, but you the real queen now.)
This video is so good! Thank you so much for it!
This shows just how little i know about being a vocalist...hopefully my new subscription will help me learn what i can do to improve. :3
I watch this and now can whistle tone thanks marry
