    Dir En Grey's performances remind me very much of the classical Japanese Noh theatre and of performances of Greek tragedy. They are unclassifiable as a band, but ' avant-garde extreme metal' probably comes closest. Kyo, the vocalist, is a phenomenon.

    • @iDEATH

      Well put. I love the experimental aspects because I really enjoy music that _demands_ your attention (in addition to what Beth pointed out about the primal infant cry). Don't get me wrong, it's great to have stuff you can just jam out to while washing the dishes or working, but there's a special place in my heart for challenging music that makes you stop everything else to listen.

      The Blossoming Beelzebub has many sounds congruent with japanese theatrical ghost sounds.

      It's hard to put them in one particular genre. That's the point of being in VK scene, you can play either very heavy or soft soft songs. But as for Sukekiyo, I'd call them as prog-experimental rock.

    20:45 _"thats why it's more than just singing, it doesn't feel like...it just feels like it's...being"_
    And that's exactly why Dir en grey has been one of my favorite bands for about 15 years now. Kyo has amazing vocal range, but he doesn't really seem to care about sounding good. I mean for god's sake, he usually sounds horrible live because he blows his voice out on the first couple shows of the tour. But their music and his passion transcends that. Dir en grey makes music that is an _experience,_ for body and soul.

  • @nondorian
    @nondorian 5 лет назад +290

    Dir En Grey are strange, bizarre and sometimes chaotic, even repulsive, but the emotional charge, artistry and will to explore and tell a story with music is always on point with them. Just as you've said, it's madness but in the best way.

    His range is breathtaking. Even on their earlier visual kei stuff, he’s always had that spectacular range. I’m so happy to have stumbled upon this channel. You might listen to their song Yokan with subtitles. He doesn’t scream at all, but his voice is beautiful.

    • @iiiduncan
      @iiiduncan 5 лет назад +10

      Range isn't so big--naturally, at least. He's a proper tenor, but surely has unusual control over his vocal muscles that allow that degree of distortion and exaggeration...and, at last (I've been following them since 'kisou,') he's got a hold of himself. It took some super-hard lessons, like a couple of tour cancellations and trips to the hospital for vocal polyps...but, homeboy is nearing mastery. His voice, despite imperfection relative to recordings, has always been meaningful to me. The "coach" nailed the primal bit. Kyo lets the subconscious out to play when he's on, but knows how to hold the leash as well. Few out there like him, for sure.

    Kyo has had vocal injuries in the past, but in general I think his technique must not be too unhealthy because he's 43! There are tons of metal musicians that have burned out their voice less than 10 years in the game and refuse to do any distortion or screaming afterwards, but despite some injuries in the past that he's clearly healed from, Kyo is arguably the best he's ever been, which tells me that it can't be too damaging overall.

    • @Maggot91ify
      @Maggot91ify 5 лет назад +18

      Yeah there's a video by VoiceHacks where she analysed Kyo's screams, what she picked up was that his technique seemed about right and correct but it's possible that in the early days he may not have been doing them as correct thus leading to the instances of vocal damage

    • @Saltcrystalis

      @@Saltcrystalis Yes, her analysis was of older performances and perhaps I'm wrong but it should be pointed out that 2011 was a good number of years after the band was founded and considering they've been making such styles of music since at least 2000, it still doesn't rule out that possibility.

    Wonderful to see you do another Dir en grey reaction :) Thanks for the time you put into this!
    Because you asked about the health issues, he was hospitalised with throat problems a couple of times but the main reason behind those issues was just how much he overworked his voice. Between 2005 and 2013 they pretty much toured or/and recorded constantly. He doesn't talk much in interviews and never quite mentions how he trains his voice...I think that might become a pretty one sided conversation ^^', I never had the chance to talk to him in private though so who knows ;)
    I loved how you mentioned how much "into the song" he is; that it seems almost unrehearsed, because I really think he lives and experiences the songs anew every time he sings them...he always tries to delve as deep as possible into them without thinking about former connections to the songs. When he finds that something in the lyrics doesn't fit his current state or thinking he just changes it. I love that because it makes each song into a constantly evolving, living thing, you can hear it breathing through his voice.
    And yeah, the other band members are just as deeply inside the rabbit hole, concentrating completely on their own journeys. Honestly...they could become quite easily distracted if they looked at him all the time...(but the 'not looking' leads to members running into each other...or falling from stage....or not noticing that Kyo has knocked himself out and is not not singing because he just doesn't want to right now....^^'')
    You would make me the happiest of people if you could make a video for "Elisabeth Addict" from Sukekiyo (Kyo's second band). It's the perfect "show-off" song for his higher register and one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard.
    Do the live version from Persuasio (I can't send a link right now. It's the one in black and white with spanish subtitles here on RUclips)
    Have a great weekend!

    When watching Dir en Grey, it's good to imagine that you're watching a theatre performance. You are watching an experience that they feed to you through our mutual subconcious understanding of the primal sounds he makes with his voice. Seeing someone that hasnt been listening to them for over a decade like myself and many other fans, watch this and describe the feelings and everything that we have all thought about them is soooo satisfying as a fan. It just shows how brilliant Kyo is because he got everything across to someone who is listening for the first time. LOVE IT, Love them!

      more I just want to add that I do not speak Japanese and the first time I heard this I didn't have CC either and it made me so emotional and tear up. The music the voice ...it just ...is amazing how well they convey what they need to through sound alone. I wish we had more of this these days in music.

    I’m love watching you react to all the crazy things he does with this voice. If you listen to the album version of this and then the live, you’ll hear how many things are different. I’m sure he rehearsed but especially for this song, sometimes I think he just tries what he feels at the time to add to the mood. I’m also gonna throw in a request for Elizabeth Addict. His range is just mind blowing.

    I'd love to see you do more Dir En Grey, but if you like Kyo's theatricality and unusual voice you may appreciate Sukekiyo, his side band. His vocal work in Sukekiyo is generally cleaner and less heavy, and uses a really different skillset from his work in Diru. Elizabeth Addict would be my recommendation for a really impressive live performance to start off with.

  • @reinieden2379

    Kyo has fucked up his voice by growling and screaming and has had a couple of polyps removed, but around 2014 he started focusing on the quality of his voice. Because around 2005 or 06 he said in an interview "I don't give a fuck about my voice, if it goes it goes". But to me that just goes to show you how he can evoke the strongest emotions in music. Still one of my favorite singers ever, he can immediately just give me chills no matter how many times I've heard him sing, and he can always make me cry. BUT DON'T WORRY HE'S BEEN FOCUSING ON HIS VOCAL HEALTH A LOT MORE, Like take the Sukekiyo track Hakudaku for an example (Kyo's other band)

    I've read that his range is A1-E6 and he occasionally does something called a whistle fry that can push him in to the 7th octave. The music can be hard to listen to sometimes but the dude has an incredible voice and everyone in the band is an amazing musician.

      Actually he doesn't make the music. It is usually Kaoru. Kyo puts the lyrics to the music.
      What amazes me of Kyo, is how he is able to write the lyrics for a musical piece and decide how to sing it and perform it.

  • @PossiblyFox

    There's no way in hell some of the primal sounds he makes are healthy. Kyo's been hospitalized so many times for all of the damage he does to his throat. But he knows this. He's very obviously a well trained singer and knows his limits but at the same time makes conscious decisions to surpass them for the sake of his performance. He willingly sacrifices his body for his art because sometimes the only way he is able to express the emotions he wants to express damages him. I respect the shit out of this man. You don't have to react to it but man, his screams in Mushi are so emotional. ruclips.net/video/4JNsYqlIvzE/видео.html
