- FIRST DRIVE: The Corolla Cross Hybrid is finally here and Toyota thinks it has another SUV hit on their hand. The XSE is the top sport trim and features LED fog lamps, 18in wheels and two-tone paint job. On the inside you will be greeted by soft-tex material, 8in infotainment screen and full digital gauge cluster. Under the hood is a 2.0L inline-4 paired with an electric motor and standard AWD. Is the 2023 Toyota Corolla Cross XSE Hybrid a better SUV to buy than a RAV4?

Toyota's vehicles grow as they age. The rav4 used to be a tiny 2 door suv. Now it is bigger than the original highlander and costs twice as much. The highlander is now a 3 row suv. In 10 years the corolla cross will be the size of a sprinter van so they can introduce a new model called the BZ145-9GTXSE Prime AWD+ mirco mini sport back super duper hybrid cross. I can't wait!
Haha yes I really like the size of older Rav4s, I've even considered buying used because the shape and size of an older Rav4 is so cute but I will probably go new with a Cross.

I think the Corolla Cross is a WINNER with 45 mpg City and 38 mpg Highway even though it takes 8 seconds to 60 mph.

If I were in the market for an SUV, this is the one I'd get. I bought a 2023 Corolla SE in February and what it lacks in off-the-line power it makes up for in mileage. In Sport mode it cuts corners pretty well!

I bought a cross and it has constant issues with stalling at red lights when it rained. It happened so often it was less than 500 miles and it had been to the dealer 3 times. I sold it 2 weeks after buying it and got a new Tacoma.

I'm glad Toyota has finally went BACK TO making the small suv the Rav4 used to be in 2004. Toyota said no one wanted. I guess they were wrong. Now if they can stop the black interior. I hate.

This is a top contender for the smaller SUV/ cross-over market. MPG is impressive! Plus a little more affordable than RAV4 but not really a huge difference in price (around $4,000 less).
Definitely one to think about. Hybrid tech is getting better and better...Toyota is no doubt the world leader!
Safety looks good. I would get this one in XSE trim for sure!
Rear leg room is only an issue for taller people. If everyone is short, they will be fine.

you made me wana buy this car. been looking for a stylish affordable hybrid and this looks like its it.
I like a lot of what Toyota has been doing, like with the improvements to RAV4, the Grand Highlander, and the Cross. IMO, the next step for the RAV4 should be to pick up some style cues from the FJ Cruiser, and fit more into the lineup as a small suburban 4Runner, and less as an undersized Highlander. Let the Cross and Venza be the urban SUVs, the Sienna be the urban hauler, and the Highlander and Grand Highlander be the suburban SUVs.
I have the 22 Corolla Cross XLE and while I do love it I wish I waited for the Hybrid Version 😭

Against the sub compacts you have the upper edge with this one because it’s a hybrid plus you get a digital cluster as well which at this price point you really don’t see. Depending on the trim you get full LED’s which is a nice touch. Strange the rav 4 you do not

I just changed my order with the dealer from a corolla cross to the cross hybrids XSE they have coming in. I currently own a 2021 RAV4 hybrid that I love but will be saving that for my kids who are buying it from me and I will be moving to this new corolla cross hybrid XSE in July 2023 when it comes in. Can you turn off the simulated gear shift feature? I really like the ecvt smoothe acceleration. With only one electric motor up front, does it still have the starter motor and the generator?

Yes. The hybrid system uses its main motor as a generator and puts a drag on the wheels whenever you press on the brake, and this is all that slows the vehicle under light to moderate braking (the amount it drags is proportional to the pressure on the brake pedal-it feels just like normal braking). Only when braking is sudden (ie panic braking) or else too heavy will the normal brakes kick in as well. They also kick in once you’re down to a slow crawl to get you from there down to a full stop. Pulling up to a stop sign, you’ll be hard-pressed to feel the transition except for the first stop or two after having sat out in the rain.
It’s the perfect size. It’s between a Corolla and RAV4. Toyota is not new to hybrids so I would trust them more than any other brand.

I'm a road driver and currently considering Prius Prime (whenever 2023 has availability). RE: mate black-I think that's good for off road vehicles: easier to wash and won't highlight scratches.

This is a very competently designed product. They will sell all they can make. Seems like Toyota is pushing all their prices to the limit. I doubt many will get imported at the 27k price point. I doubt any will show up below 30k. It's too good of a product.

Great review - very informative. I’d definitely go with Corolla Cross Hybrid over the RAV4 HEV and choose the XSE trim. We don’t need the slightly extra space of the RAV4. Also like the styling of the Corolla Cross Hybrid better.
I wish there would be more about cargo space. It’s hard to tell just by looking. I can’t find videos demonstrating it.
@@krecikowi - There's 21.5 cubic feet of room behind the rear seats, which opens up to a maximum of 61.8 cubic feet with those seats folded down. The RAV4 hybrid provides 37.6 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats and 69.8 cubic feet with these seats folded. A small difference with the seats folded down.
@@krecikowi I wish there was more storage space (i.e. no overhead sunglasses compartment) and space to put other nic-nacks. Also, wish toyota would put illuminated lights on window and door lock/unlock switches on driver's side door so you can find the buttons at night--my Ford has it--come-on Toyota get with it! Lastly, I wish there was a spare tire!

This Cross is more sleek as someone who loves the Porsche Macan. Don't like the larger SUVs, smaller gets you more nimble handling. My wife will drive this mostly but we both do 99% city driving.

I own this one hybrid here in Japan . What an awesome car for city and road trips ! Perfect dimensions inside out , extremely cheap to run and a neck twister . Price is unbeatable as well . Toyota Corollas are definitely not brainer.

@@KimA67. yes ! Hybrid version is so cheap to run , I spend Like $50 bucks a month only on gas . Rav 4 is bigger outside but the same size inside compared to the Corolla Cross .

Ive been told you can shut fob off then lock doors manually so signal cannot be copied, the Club for steering wheel ect. At 66 I dont need these thugs throwing me out of my vehicle as they did to one poor woman. I've been so undecided what to buy now. Drove the Corolla sedan considering perhaps this.

My lease on my 2021 ultra low mileage Venza Limited ends next year. Ready for something else. Buy price will be $ 26,000. Will buy and trade in. Pay sales tax on $ 26,000 and since trade in price will be about $ 8,000 higher, I’ll get sales tax credit on about $ 34,000. That’s about a $ 600 savings. You’re not really going to let your lease expire are you?

I wish they would also offer a sage / muddy green but the press release says the only green will be "Cypress" which is a dark not quite hunter green. It will come in the nice "Celestite" (light blue) though.

My uncle in Vietnam bought a 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross 1.8HEV which is Hybrid for $41,200 out the door. They have only 3 trims: 1.8G, 1.8 V, and the Hybrid. My uncle's car is made in Thailand. Wonder why now this trim just now coming to the US. I live in Hawaii and I don't recall ever seeing a Toyota Corolla Cross.

i have a corolla cross with 2.0 engine. i use extreme driving style to get 5.0L/100km, which is 49 MPG. i never go over 100km/h, seldom let the engine go over 2000rpm when accelerating and hyper mill when ever possible.
I like this car but not a fan of the back seat passengers having to sit on a lithium ion battery pack. The radiation emitted is not good for the reproductive system.
Was looking up the base model non-hybrid 25K perfect car for first car for my daughter

Sticking with a RAV4 in big part because of cargo space. I was considering it until I saw the Cross in person, I like the more "spacious" interior of the RAV4.

Prefer smaller size of Corolla Cross over RAV4. RAV4 too big for city driving and competitive parking. Love the CC design, trims for this Goldilocks!
Toronto Canada .. I beieve I read RAV4 is 5'' longer than Cross and about 4'' smaller in width. They say not a hudge difference between the two. I'm considering the Cross.
