Why Amnesty International singles out Israel for its crackdown on critics | DW News

- Amnesty International has said the world is seeing a near breakdown of international law. It cites multiple conflicts and the rise of artificial intelligence as the main threats. The annual report on human rights singles out Israel and its allies. In the weeks following Hamas's terror attack on October 7 last year, Israeli authorities cracked down on protests criticizing the Israeli military response. Palestinian citizens were arrested for participating in protests or posting on social media. DW Special Correspondent Amien Essif met up with human rights lawyer Ahmad Khalefa who was himself arrested at a protest and charged with "incitement to terrorism."

America abused the word human right, now the word has lost its meaning.
No, we just arent fair in its application.
We are great at calling out our enemies human right abuses, which have been valid. But we are incapable of using the same metric against ourselves and allies.
i wish this would be shown on the german language dw
Nein. Verboten!

I think 🇮🇱 committed all kinds of crimes on earth.
Oh yeah? And how about 🇵🇸?
It's that one neighbor that simply cannot get along with any other neighbor, no matter whatever, whenever, wherever. 🇮🇱 And then Germany labeled guilty forever for something that happened almost a century ago.

well, if you get your news from dw, it's not surprising that you think that.

More journalists have lost their lives in Gaza than in any other conflict. A crime against humanity.
Don’t hold them accountable. Stop criticizing and show unwavering support. How else can they take over that land?
Who told them to report about war crimes?
I'm guessing this guy didn't spend any effort actually comparing the Gaza conflict to any other conflict what so ever.

The rules based order after 1948? The Soviet Union, nor the US haven't been punished for their violations either. The nations who created the rules don't have to uphold them since they are the winners of WW2 and it's aftermath.
Finally, something very comprehensive relating to this topic.
Based on what we have witnessed, IDF army is deranged.

arrested for being against the war??????? is that kind of democracy you'd like to implement all over the world??? if yes keep it for your families.
We do have it here our nations by the way. Any war, any protest, you can find arrests.

We invaded Iraq based on "allegations" that haven't been proven. Its nothing new.
Israel has _not_ been "singled out" at all, singled out implies that they are being unfairly targeted, which is not the case. Amnesty International is only holding them (and their allies) to the same standard that everyone else is.
Then what do they say about the Palestinians
@@JeffEbe-te2xs Israel is never held to account or made to answer for its crimes, they are always deflecting as you yourself have done in their defense.
This is about Israel, the focus is where it should be. On Israel.
@@JeffEbe-te2xs occupied people under apartheid systemic ethnical cleansing for decades.
@@JeffEbe-te2xs Whataboutism is a poor counterargument. The refusal to address Israeli abuses and noncompliance with international laws is the reason things are as bad as they are.
Wonder what this Amnesty International is doing to get the innocent hostages released?
thats the logic! sounds very much like the 7 decades of violent responses during the illegal occupation...
Shouldn't you be wondering what the government of Israel is doing to accomplish the same? The only time they and their supporters seem to show any concern for those poor people is when they need to justify their atrocities, at all other times they couldn't care less.
They got their priorities straight, so should you. More children and minors die in Gaza every single day than there are hostages. More journalists have been killed in Gaza than there are hostages. More foreign aid workers have been killed than there are hostages.
The hostages have literally been buried under a mountain of corpses by the IDF. How do you justify caring about 100 people when 35000 have already been killed in their name?
Don’t recognize that their are hostages or that oct7 happened
@@JeffEbe-te2xs They're not so fixated on things that happened half a year ago as Israels apologists and propagandists are, not when so much more has happened since then and many more people are dead or at risk of death.
Do they not count in your books because they aren't the right religion and race?
I thought you needed to know the definition of words before going on the news, guess this lady didn't get the memo.
It is not about who has the "right" invisible friend. It is about being a good human in this life. We don't know if or what a next life could be. There are plenty of versions of that made up in mud huts thousands of years ago.

How does the old, wise saying go? "Where there is smoke there is fire?" 🔥 🇮🇱
0:42 Cool glasses! Let's add some tiny wiper blades! 😎
Is it wise? "Many materials will smoke before reaching their ignition temperature. If oxygen is low or absent, fuels will smoke heavily without igniting."
Hint: it's not wise.
Hamas produces all the fires and points fingers. You then blame the smoke on Israel and then associate the fire to them.
See your issue?
Really? Is that a question? Why Israel was singled out? That is the question that you are putting forward?
"Democracy"
Its a free for all right now. Ervery country can do what they want if they habe the Power to do so.

Israel doesn't violate those rights out of disrespect for them, but out of lack of alternative ways to fight an enemy who isn't concerned with human rights, including of it's own citizens. Israel could clearly do better protecting civilians while fighting Hamas, but I doubt it's much better..

Pootlers amnesty 😂 hey germans , why in Germany koran law ruling over domestic law? Call g-amnesty and scream article five 😂😂
Amnesty, you are such a group of liers!
Israel isn't perfect, it has some stains on its democratic credibility, but the circumstances of the cases given are not actually as bad or violent as people make it out to be. Khalefa certainly showed some sympathy for Hamas or other terror groups and seems opposed to Israel's existence as a whole, so I am not opposed to banning those things, but there is a good case to be made that this counter-incitement law can be abused by far-right groups and that it's probably not necessary or good to imprison people for this kind of harmful speech. I think it's enough to convict them by giving them a monetary penalty like we do it with incitement in Germany or France. Prison sentences should generally not be handed out for speech-related crimes.
This is 2024
"some stains on its democratic credibility" is a gross understatement. They have about as much credibility as America used to have in the Jim Crow days. A perfunctory fine is not proportionate to their crimes, nor will it address the underlying problems.
It seems that Israel is country strong in the military, but has a long way ahead when it comes to legal systems.
That is by design, an intended feature and not a bug.
