History of Safari

  • Safari is Apple’s web browser that was released back in 2003 with Mac OS 10.3 Panther. But you might be wondering, “what web browser did the Mac use before Safari was created?” Well they used Netscape Navigator which was the most popular web browser at the time thanks to a very special capability where text and graphics appeared on the screen simultaneously as the webpage loaded. Now that may not sound like a very special feature today, but earlier web browsers would stay completely blank until 100% of the web content loaded; which meant it could take up to 3 minutes to load just one webpage.
Netscape Navigator served as the Mac’s default web browser until 1998. And what happened next was quite fascinating. When Steve Jobs returned to Apple in 1997, he found the company in much worse financial shape than he expected, discovering they were just 90 days from bankruptcy. And those desperate times called for desperate measures. Steve Jobs initiated talks with Microsoft, the arch nemesis of Apple in those days, and tried working out an investment deal. You see, Apple had a long-running lawsuit that claimed Microsoft copied the look and feel of Windows from the Macintosh operating system. This gave Apple some leverage in negotiations by offering to drop the lawsuit if Microsoft invested in Apple. But there was another factor at play, Microsoft was in the middle of an antitrust fight over its forceful promotion of Internet Explorer which was tarnishing Microsofts image with consumers and could lead to an antitrust lawsuit from the US government. So it was in Microsoft’s interest to negotiate a deal with Apple in order to keep them around as a competitor.
As the deal took shape, five specific terms were agreed upon by both parties. First, Microsoft had to make a 150 million dollar investment in non-voting Apple shares. That meant Microsoft didn’t have any say in decisions Apple made despite being a large shareholder. Second, both Apple and Microsoft would establish patent cross licensing. So any existing or future patents created within five years would be shared between both companies. Third, Microsoft would commit to creating Mac versions of Microsoft Office for a five year period, with the same number of major releases as Windows. Fourth, Microsoft and Apple would collaborate on Java compatibility to strengthen its viability as a competitor. Fifth, was that every Mac had to ship with Internet Explorer as the default web browser. And not many people were happy about it. But the blow was softened when Jobs clarified that users could change the default browser back to Netscape Navigator which still shipped with every Mac.

KHTML comes from the KDE Desktop environment and was used in Konqueror, KDEs own browser. Konqueror had the added benefit of being a fully capable file manager and FTP-browser along with the web. Back before I moved on to Apple I swore that KHTML was the best web-rendering engine out there. However my technical understanding of what it actually did was limited as I was 14. Today I miss the capability to switch between file previews and the web in tabs and basically rarely having to leave the main program.

What features Safari browser added, are still not available in most browsers especially on the Windows and chromium browsers side. I was recommending some to Vivaldi and Opera few weeks and months ago respectively and got a good hearing and criticism of what I'm expecting them to provide to me. I said a browser equivalent to Safari. They rejected my features and bugs reported. No wonder why both are having less than 5% share in user market. And both companies aren't creating anything new but living on chrome, chromium and their engineers work. But I'm happy with brave, edge and chrome. Edge is literally hitting the ball out the stadium with features like TTS read aloud and immersive reader even on PDF files.

It‘s something paradojical. Being APPLE, Safari is like the last browser to supports new features in HTML5, while other browsers do it earlier. Safari delays to get the support for CSS new features, but Opera, Firefox, Chrome, even Edge are supporting since long time ago.
Why Safari is back always in this issue? It‘s like the “Internet Explorer” of the 2020 decade. As a web developer I have to code something specifically for Safari that shares 8% of the browsers, unless I use jQuery which I am trying to avoid.

Thats fascinating, I never knew Microsoft and Apple had that partnership. In hindsight Microsoft saving Apple ended up hurting Microsoft in the end, As far as consumer electronics goes, Microsoft couldn't compete with the iPod, they lost out to iOS in the phone race, and up until recently Windows PCs could never quite match the premium feel of a Macbook or iMac. Had Microsoft left Apple to die, we may be using Windows phones now instead of iPhone, and it might be Android vs Windows instead Android vs iOS. Android may not even exist as we know it today. Given how long it took Microsoft to enter the mobile market Google may have wanted a full desktop OS to compete with Windows rather than a mobile OS. Without the revolution that was the iPhone, there may not have been a need for a mobile OS like Android.

One company doing everything. I don’t buy it not for one second. Google is too insidious. Won’t use chrome. We need to get some limits on data that can be collected on us. Great history lesson there. I am surprised that they are toting their so called private browsing features. Shouldn't those have been standard from the start? I mean, that's one of the problems with the internet is all the darn ads. I've been using ad blockers for years and thankful for their developers work.

@@WarriorsPhoto private browsing wasn't a standard because the technology was not understood at the time so that's why it wasn't a "standard"

Fun fact: Had Microsoft not sold all of its Apple stock just a few short years later, they could have turned that 150M investment into over 150B (Rather than the 550M or so they got).

Just hearing about the acid test on IE just make me understand why it's been getting allot of the memes about it being slow. Even though I'm a Windows user primarily I haven't used Microsoft's Edge or Microsoft's IE that much for a majority of my internet usage since I started using Chrome back in 2009.

I remember Netscape, but on Windows

Joshua Christensen Remember the famed mint green default webpage background colour? I always wondered why they chose that. 😄 I actually used Netscape as my main browser for years; I particularly liked the UI of Netscape 7. Eventually the Mozilla project led to Phoenix/Firebird/Firefox having the same engine but more UI features, so uninstalled Netscape. I was a Web designer back then. Soon I fell in love with Opera (especially once it cut the ads), and it was so intuitive and Web-developer friendly that I kept it as my main browser for years, until the disastrous Opera 15 was released, which saw the Opera team cutting the Presto engine and literally all my favourite UI features (tab stacking, mouse gestures, etc.) to make Opera just another WebKit browser. After that it mattered much less because I had a career change.
