    I really like the patterned ply stuff on this channel. It inspired me to incorporate it into a dresser I made. I used 3/4" ply to make the pattern. Then, I inlaid the design into another sheet that I cut to make the faces for 4 drawer fronts. I also poured a concrete top for it and restored an old silver back mirror to go with it. My wife thinks it's the most unique dresser she has ever seen.

    Found your channel because of this and the bent lamination videos, but your furniture have been most influential. I've always been pretty good at designing and have always adored architecture and design, but never really wanted to go in that direction, because it just didn't seem like there was anything to do for me, despite family and friends urging me to do so. Then I found your channel and watched your furniture videos and you've had such an impact that I have decided to become a furniture designer and have already begun designing, building and filming the creation process (the latter is of my sisters request). I've also finally gotten a table saw and am in the process of building a crosscut sled, so I'm looking highly forward to trying this out myself! Thank you so much Michael!

    I thought that _has_ to be tea at the end there, and was surprised that we even have it here in New Zealand! I only discovered your channel when looking for ideas for my router table build, and it has quickly become one of my favourites. Plus it is nice that you are less accident prone than Stumpy Nubs, and - dare I say it - Jonathan Katz-Moses (I love them both btw). So much of what we see on the RUclips woodworking channels seems to be repeated channel by channel, but a lot of your ideas seem to be unique to you, and they are great ideas.

    That box is a work of art.
    Sadly though, nowhere in my country sells plywood like that with all those layers.
    Even the imported plywood has at the most, maybe 6 layers at 3/4 thickness. I guess it's a matter of economics. The hardware stores will only sell what people are willing to pay for.
    So I will have to make do with our local, beautiful tropical woods instead. 🙂

  • @b3arwithm3

    Hi Michael, I discovered patterned plywood from your channel few months back and I find it fascinating. I tried last week, but my saw kinda bog down with the 45o cut on Baltic birch. I have a basic jobsite 15A saw. Cutting straight is also a challenge given I can't feed the wood smoothly. Any tip on making this cut? I will get a 7.25" blade and try again.

    • @MichaelAlm
      @MichaelAlm  3 года назад +1

      Hey, There are a few things you can do to get a better result from that kind of saw. One is to like you said, get a new blade. The second is to look for " thin kerf blades" The thinner blades take out less material and therefore take less horsepower to push through the cut. The third thing is to look for "plywood/melamine blades" which have a higher tooth count and are designed for cutting plys. The last thing is to spray a lubricant on the blade. They make ones that are designed to keep the pitch from building up on the teeth of the blade, and that keeps them sharp for longer. I hope that helps!!

    • @MichaelAlm
      @MichaelAlm  3 года назад

      I've seen people do herringbone, and round the corners. It is a bit of a gamble to use a router on patterned ply, but if it's a good sharp bit, it works most of the time. Maybe glue up a small test panel first, and see how it goes.

    iv been thinking for a while what if the square part of the pattern was Gold, Copper, Brass material?

    • @richs5422
      @richs5422 3 года назад

      That would be cool! Brass, copper and aluminum could be used in the same way as shown in the vid. It cuts OK with woodworking blades, just go slow. Might need to use gorilla glue or epoxy and roughen the metal surfaces for strong glue joints. You may want to sand to a very high grit, depends on how you like the random orbit sander patter that you'll get. But, sandpaper to 2000 grit is available at an auto parts store, and up to at least 15,000 can be purchased online. Lacquer is the traditional finish for brass. If you wanted gold, perhaps gold leaf over aluminum? Gold isn't plated directly over copper because copper migrates through and turns the surface green over time. So, you might want to avoid putting gold leaf over copper or brass (brass = copper + tin). Aluminum is easy to cut and it's pretty cheap. Excellent idea!

    • @MichaelAlm
      @MichaelAlm  3 года назад

      I'd definitely like to experiment with that! My next build involves a lot of brass and it's super fun to work with.
