  • This is part one of an epic wave sailing session at lower Kanaha Beach Park on the north shore of Maui, Hawaii. We had no wind in over a week and the forecast showed some potential for light off shore winds in the afternoon. A few of us waited on the beach in anticipation which looked to be waining as the clock ticked past 2pm. All of a sudden the off shore wind picked up and the session was on. 17:00 classic Kanaha.
    So many turns could use water Uber to get back upwind.
    Really does feel like riding a nice Kanaha swell...thanks for posting.

    I notice you schlog a fair distance with your foot up by the mast base. A couple sailors I know also do this, but I don’t seem to notice much of a difference. Is there something different you do with your weight or sail that makes this technique especially useful? I’m an Oahu sailor.
    Nice video

      @gatesurfer I find that this stance helps balance my board when slogging and it also increases my ability to go upwind. If I stood any further back on the board the nose would be riding high in the water. It is likely a result of my board's volume distribution.

    Finally a new video of yours! Great! i was soo waiting for it! Is that a custom board- pyramid with quad setup? How does the pyramid performe compared to your cube? Keep it coming please!

      Awesome to hear! I have a lot of footage collected from this winter and will be dropping more videos soon. The board in this video is one of Levi's custom 93L boards. I have been testing a bunch of different boards all winter to find the right size and shape for me. I hadn't sailed in over three years so I can not give you a good comparison to the 86L Cube which was also killer shape from Levi. I really liked this 93L and I am amazed by how well these higher volume boards perform. It is a bit big for my all round board but in light to moderate winds it rips!

    Love these videos mate! How do you get the sound of voice clear without all the wind noise in the GoPro?

    • @koav
      @koav  Год назад +2

      Thank you Paul! It's an ongoing struggle to find the best solution to reduce the wind noise. I am currently using a Foam Noise Reduction Cover Case For Gopro along with little dead cats over each microphone. For the dead cats I cut out cheep costume moustache pieces. The problem is that when I fall in the water quite often water droplets will get trapped in the microphone port and create an annoying whistle sound until it clears.

      I have been testing a few different custom boards this winter all of which will be featured in future videos. This specific board was one of Levi's old 93L. boards. I sailed it for about a month and I absolutely loved it in lighter winds but it was a bit too big for me when it got super windy.

    Hey man, how is that Qu4d 5.0 performing? I am considering to buy one myself...

    • @koav
      @koav  Год назад

      I am really impressed with the performance of the QU4D. I use it as my light wind sail when in the past I always had a 5 batten sail for this purpose. The QUAD is the perfect mix as nimble wave sail similar to the KS3 (power is easy to turn off and on) , it feels light and it pumps really well when I am slogging around.

      Hey man, just a quick question concerning rigging the qu4d 5.0. Do you rig it to the specs like 28 ext and 170 boom? (i have a Kauli 370) Or do you rig it differently? Could it be that it needs less downhaul than advised? Im 70kgs and I also just wanna use it as a light wind sail. What do you think? Thx!

    • @koav
      @koav  Год назад

      I rig the QU4D 5.0 on a Kauli 400/370 split mast... 400 bottom and 370 top. I'm quite a bit heavier 87-88Kg. I think the recommended boom setting are correct.

    Why did you choose the quad over the ks3?

    • @koav
      @koav  Год назад +1

      Great Question. I use the QUAD as my light wind sail. I feel the 5.0 QUAD gives me a little more pumping ability to get the board planning onto the approaching wave and it feels amazing wave riding. I use the KS3 in sizes 4.6 and smaller.
